my two cents: range balls have lower compression than normal balls so that they don't fly so far and make it harder for the poor helper to pick up. also some ranges wash their balls by soaking them in water, making them lose their shape.

i played golf with a semi-pro swedish exchange student once, he said when we go to the range we should only be looking out for ball flight, not distance because it's never accurate. so... range practice is only for ball flight, and actual golf course games with shiny new golf balls is for flight and distance.

sometimes the ball flight quite misleading also. my trajectory seems to be very weird with balls at certain ranges, which i SHALL NAME because the range owner does not seem to want to change his balls at all. the balls at turf city gives me extremely weird trajectories, always dipping at the end. some of the balls even have cracks in them, and trust me, u'll be surprised at the way the ball flies on certain shots. some of them are so botak, and the trajectory is so weird, u will understand why dimples were invented in the first place.

anyway, i go to the range mainly to check my ball striking also.

wah.. this kinda reevaluates why you SHOULD go to the range in the first place huh.. i'm usually so concerned about distance and i tend to neglect the ball-striking aspect of it. sometimes 200+ balls and go by in a little over an hour.. hmmm i gotta spend more quality time as opposed to quantity time now.

Ironfist, you seow ah? 200+ balls in just over an hour? Ur just pounding away la.... 100 balls last me that long. And tired better stop, or you'll just be ingraining mistakes into your muscle memory.

Quality time is right way to go, take time to evaluate each shot and it's flight. Or do drills to ingrain a move. And practice whole pre-shot routine with each shot, then you'll come close to at least replicating some of what is required on the course bro.

200+ balls in less than 1 hour is hardcore, IF. It takes me about twice that time to get through 200 balls. I find that I practice better when I hit, pause and try to figure out why my ball went right. Then I fix my shot and hit again.

Too many shots taken too rapidly doesn't work for me. In fact, I'm fearful that it may cause me to adopt bad swings which I'm not conscious of.

one way to control the desire to just keep pounding away is not to take so many balls from the machine at 1 go...

sometimes i go range and see golfers reach their bay, first thg they do is to go to machine and draw 2 big basket of balls, pour onto the bay tray and starting pounding away... naturally you will be less likely to think through your shots/setup...

i try to take no more than 30 or 45 each time, finish, then take more.... though i make more trips to machine, it gives me a time to think and rest also...

try if it will work for you...

Actually tpy uses yards and not metres. Their distance is very short. Range balls typically go shorter by ten percent. It could also be that you never catch the ball flush in the range but got one hot. I had hit my irons a gd 20m long on solid contact

Agree that range balls go lesser by 10-15%.

However, nothing compares to those range balls at the old Singa Inn.... balls there simply CMI. Embarassed

taking a few balls at a time is always good....

I have some routine at the range:

1. About 20 balls to warm up from wedge to 6 iron.
2. Then start with driver. Visualise that I am playing and teeing up as if on the course itself.
3. Second shot, maybe a 7 iron for par 4, and see if can make GIR.
4. Start routine again for another hole say par 5.

Overall it makes my time at the range more interesting and helps to analyse your shots with full concentration as if you are playing it for real.....

Ooniik, doesn't that format of practice result in less consistent practice with a particular club? The constant swapping of clubs to use doesn't allow you to properly identify and correct your errors (if any).

I can carry the ball 260m and more... so long as the ball sits in my pocket while I walk.
