PostSubject: Threadjacking   Tue Feb 22, 2011 12:06 pm

Not sure if you guys feel the same way...

Far too often i see a new thread with an interesting topic get drowned with completely off-topic replies. In the end, instead of getting any useful info out of the thread, all i learn of are who wants to have a game with who, and who should be giving how many strokes, blah blah..

I'm pretty sure the OP feels disappointed too, since he obviously had some burning questions he needed answers to, and all he gets are useless replies from people he probably doesn't even know.

There are specific forums for the usual TCSS, so why aren't people using them? I know this forum prides itself in being a collection of friendly people passionate about the game, and it's good that flame wars hardly ever happen here, but i kinda remember that when this was first set up, it was aiming to be a premier golf forum. I assume to do so, there should be a wealth of information in these threads waiting for newbies to find using the search function. Whether or not the information is accurate is another matter, since most replies are personal opinions after all, but something is better than nothing.

To make myself clear, i do not have anything against anyone here. I was initially gonna reply to one of the threads with these comments, but decided against it coz it might seem i was targeting specific individuals (and i would also be guilty of threadjacking).

Ok. Rant over. Comments?

Sometimes it starts when the topic reach a plateau or when some sort of finale/conclusion are there. Sometimes it starts too early in the discussion. I'm also guilty of doing that and now a little more aware and will check if topic can go off topic already e.g. "terrible attitude from a felow user".

thanks for the post to remind us all, Solarpop!

actually will be good if we can explore having a function which the OP can mark if a certain reply is out of topic....eg. football 'yellow card'.

then we have a summary at the end of Qtr, to announce the nick with the most number of yellow cards....hahahahaha

For this example, i would say the tcss was a good thing since it turned a very confrontational topic into something more amicable, provided the OP was willing to see it that way. I only hope he didn't take it that the regulars here were ganging up against him.

I realize this forum doesn't have the "report" function either.

Actually, it's the mods/admins/marshalls so called task to remind people so one thread is not going offtopics.

But in reality, very hard. All of us have full time job to do, and I think it's everyone's task to remind everyone of not going off topic, or bring the non related chit chat somewhere else...

I'm not sure if this was raised before but it's difficult not to digress. This may be a forum but it's akin to a chitchat corner. People often start a thread but the thread digresses. If the issue is a genuine question, then the threadstarter should jump in and get the thread back on track Smile

Ok, so it's the moderators' role but GR may not have enough moderators to monitor all threads. This, by the way, is an issue which is commonplace in many forums. Threads deviate and it's tricky to get them all back on track.

At the same time, I've been told off for not giving people the right to voice their opinions as and how they want to. So, perhaps the additional liberty means a greater chance for going OT.

But this is not a serious issue. Like I said, the threadstarter can just bark at the posters and reiterate his/her question. People here are great in that they will happily comply and offer help. But you can't get everyone as disciplined as you'd like them to be.

Believe you me, I've tried Razz

Besides... life is more fun this way Smile

Nice one solarpop. It was getting a little boring after 10-15 posts, people talking about giving strokes, who drive how far, etc.

@cornball: It is always very ego boosting for them since the thread is getting some attention?

Bravo Solarpop for highlighting this out.

i am sure that I am one of the culprits. And i apologise for my wrong doings....

But i would like to disagree about the above about the ego boosting part. IF golf gets too serious, it will be like the commentary in a European Tour Touranment. And I believe we get the attention irregardless how far we drive if thats what you need to know.

So for those who really wants the proper information on certain things, please try to do a search first and if not, try to post at the correct place.

Guilty as charged!

But hey, it's my way of socializing with GRians I know, though sometimes it may go OT.
Then again, a little give & take should not be that bad yea?

Life's so serious and sad already so perhaps some like me may be a little wee bit relaxed and OT in ppl's thread. But I do make it a point to OT threads started by ppl whom I know coz' they know me and perhaps would not find it too much of an offence.

Right, golfjoy? hehehehe

actually, I like this topic....so lets share:

One clear difference as alluded by S70B is that in this forum, there is always constant encouragement to mingle, to game together .....

so what happen is that groups start to form...which leads to teasing and TCSS since familiar liao.

But tats not an excuse to OT one topic. My 2 cents, the WTS thread should not be TCSS

Guys.. if you know me in person and see how i golf, you will know i'm not the dead serious kind on the course. It's good to have fun, and based on the friendships that have been built because of this forum, it's inevitable that friendly banter appear in the threads. All i'm saying is, have some control.. You can't really depend on the mods do the job, neither on the OP since he may be a newbie and you don't expect him to come out and tell people to buzz off.

So really, it's up to every single individual to know when to stop. And i'm glad many of you feel the same way..
