I was with my buddy in US back in Jan.

He had been taking lessons from Donny Lee, part of the teaching staff @ Core Academy in Orange County National headed by Sean Foley.

Swing point of view, he is swinging very differently now compared to Mar 2010 when I last saw him.

I must say that there are some good points but also some not-so-easy to execute moves in what he was telling me that he is trying to execute.

Ballstriking-wise, its alot lower in trajectory than what I remember him doing. He is in the middle of the swing change so the occasional wild shot still happens but he is very similar to what Tiger feels in that the changes are for the better and it will make him a better player.

I think before we can diss what SF does, we need to understand what he teaches. Remember that he has Hunter Mahan, Sean O'Hair, Justin Rose and Stephen Ames as his other staple of students. I happen to think Justin has developed a very solid swing now compared to the early 2000s.

SF is not a bad guy (from what I have heard and seen personally) and I think the media is kind of making him out to be a worse guy than he is. Yeah he is a little cocky and has a little chip on his shoulder, but in that arena I think you need to have that to some degree. He needs people to respect him and what he does. He speaks his mind and tells it like it is. I actually respect that he has opinions about what he does and what some of the other teachers are doing. Plus he has to defend his methodology, otherwise who is going to come and work with him.

He had a solid stable of players before he decided to work with TW. O'Hair to me has one of the best golf swings I have ever seen. Effortless power.

I am not sure this method will work for Tiger..only time will tell. But a great teacher will mold Tiger's own swing with some of his ideas. Sort of a best of both worlds approach. I think that TW swung the club the best while with Butchie. I still remember him hitting this 3/4 9 iron at Augusta and thought that might be the best motion I have ever seen. Don't know why he would even change that. But Tiger is 35 now and his body is different and cannot do some of the things he did several years prior. Not to mention that swing led to him breaking his leg.

I did not like what Haney did with his swing. I would consider those wasted years, even though he did win some tournaments. I would argue that it was shortgame and raw talent that allowed him to win those events, not his ball striking.

I think there have been improvements in GIR and Driving accuracy at least in some of the events. So that is a positive. If it does not work out however, he is going to have to find another guy or just drop coaches all together and find it on his own.

And this is what Lee Trevino thinks:

Lee Trevino, speaking at a luncheon to promote the Byron Nelson Championship, said Woods would do good to dump his swing coach and revert back to the same principles that made him dominant over a decade ago.

“My suggestion to Tiger Woods, which I don’t know will ever happen, is he’s got to look at the film from when he started winning all those tournaments and go right back to what he was doing and get rid of all these people,” said Trevino, 71, a six-time major champion.

The comments were first reported on ESPNDallas.com.

Trevino continued by saying once Woods “gets his mindset straight and quits messing with all these instructors” that his winning form will return.

Woods, 35, is four major championships shy of tying Nicklaus’ record. Wednesday Nicklaus said at PGA National that he still believes Woods will find his game and ultimately surpass his major total.

Trevino concurs, to a point. Although he didn’t say if he thought Woods would pass Nicklaus, he does feel that he will find his old winning form.

“He’ll find his game,” Trevino said. “He’s too good a player. He’s got desire. He hasn’t lost that yet. He just got off the road a little bit and it’s going to take him a little while to get his head on straight, but he’s Tiger Woods.”

The swing change Foley is getting Tiger to change to is foreign to Tiger.
Only time will tell if it works out for Tiger.

Frankly, I won;t be surprised if TIger drops hims as coach and goes back to Butch.

I don't think that Tiger will go back to Butch.

I have a couple of buddies on tour that were close to that situation and there were some "things" that happened that caused the split. It was not because they decided to go in another direction or however the media spun it. I can't go into exact details on here but there were a number things that occurred over a period of time that fractured the relationship. Butch's ego was getting to big and it reached a boiling point at the British Open the year they split.

Unless a miracle happens they will not get back together.

Whoa.......insider information.....thanks Dan.

Maybe, just maybe Tiger may just swallow his pride (not that he has much left) and seek him out. After all, Tiger was playing well under him.

Very Happy

Is there an overhype on coaching? just wondering.

But am serious, as I found out that some university students here are having tuition too???

Back to golf.....when is coaching enough? Is the game so tough today that even the top-est player need to have coach eye-balling their training?

Did Jack or Seve have such ?

Lee Trevino, with all due respect to the great man, belongs to the old school swing of thoughts. Sean Foley is considered new school. Definately a conflict of interest here i feel.

I honestly like what Sean Foley is doing to Tiger's swing. If you look at Sean Foley's youtubes, his swing or for that matter swing philosophy is efficient and effortless yet powerful. But looking the Tiger's old swing and what SF is incorporating to his current swing, its going to be a major overhaul.

For one, SF advocates putting your weight on your front side at address (left side for right handers), and even more weight on the left at impact. Something similar to the Right Sided Swing that Paul Tudor teaches......

SF and TW Swings

IMHO......

Jack had Grout and Flick, and Phil Rodgers. So he did have some coaching.

Seve not so sure.

Coaching works, there is no question about it, but I think it has to be the correct mix of personalities. Yeah I think it might be a little overboard these days, but these guys are playing for serious cash. I too would seek out the best way to make sure I was maximizing my talent and abilities.

I read this a few minutes ago and thought of sharing it

How good is Sean Foley?

Justin Rose is not only in a position to secure his place in the last 30 that next week will contest the Tour Championship in the FedEx Cup finale, he may also be set to start changing the perceptions some of Sean Foley's detractors have about the Canadian swing coach.

Foley has been overseeing Tiger Woods' latest swing change for the past year, and even though Woods has been out of golf with a knee injury for at least half of that time, Foley's been the subject of much discussion in the light of the fact that Woods has not appeared to be making too much progress with his most recent swing change.

Indeed, Woods has been playing some of the worst golf of his sensational career and Foley's detractors have started questioning his methods and philosophy.

Rose, meanwhile, is saying that his first round 63 at the BMW on Thursday - a round he described as easily his best this year and one of his best ever - could partly be attributed to the "little tune-up" he was given last week by Foley.

The tune-up came at a difficult moment in his career.

Give Foley a year and hopefully a year with no injuries for Tiger.

See what happens then we can comment. for now, just enjoy the show.

I hope Tiger pass Jack's record and Byron Nelson's record. 4 more majors and 9-10 more PGA victories. He's only 37 so theres still about 6-7 yrs of great golf in him. Maybe not the Tiger of old but could have a year like Padraig in 2008 or what Luke is having this year or like Vijay Singh in 2007 or Kenny Perry in 2008-2009. Not dominant but still get wins.
