started golf less than a year ago...
had 5 hours of lessons in the beginning... stopped due to work, time constraint and thought to myself i rather pay that money for green fees( lol thought was a good idea at the time)
been playing on the courses for 7 monthes...
nearly broke 100 loads of times.. operative word here is nearly...
annoyed now, but i do realise that i need to work on the mental aspect of the game and work on what little short game i have... we will see in the next few months... plus been playing with better playing partner who are patient, does help i think...

Well, I was tempted to say:

""It kind of depends, if I start at 730am and i drank heavily the night before, I usually break 80 by 930am...
But if i start at 8am++ and I am a bit more awake. then I will break 80 ard 11am....

It really depends on how awake I am... And how much alcohol I deligently managed to squeeze into my tummy the night before...

But then again, I never actually kept track of when my score for the game broke the 80 mark.... why should you?""

But that would have been an utter waste of my sense of humor.

My approach to breaking 100 has been more course management and expectation management than outright trying to hit good shots. I approach each hole with some form plan. If I drive it badly. I take my medicine and hit it back to the fairway and approach or layup from there. I try and limit my worst score to a double bogey and aim for bogey for most holes. A par is a bonus.

about 1 year for 90
another 1.5 years for 80's

Now back to 90-100 range which is crap. Maybe need more coaching. Bro Shamusan, can you let me know the detail of your coach ?

Thanks,

This is a marvelous crazy game.

Less than a year to break 100, after spending some time studying the swing at the range..

And about 8 months after that, break 90. So the range analysis seemed to pay off.

So far, spent a solid 13 months going to the range daily with a camcorder, read every book I could get my hands on, surfed every notable golf forums, subscribed to some online lessons (beyond the basics, nothing much). There's lots of misinformation (surprisingly Golf Digest is an occasional culprit), but among the rubbish, I discovered some gems. One just needs to be persistent, and be armed with sufficient knowledge to tell the difference.

The right coach helps, but that is a rare creature indeed.

Went through several coaches, some helped, many others wasted my time and money.

Do some homework before taking on a coach.

So far, I have encountered or heard about:
- coaches with no expertise (can't even help a beginner to launch the ball)
- coaches with outdated and incorrect knowledge (what causes a slice? a draw?)
- coaches who were dishonest; who try to sell you equipment instead of teaching
- coaches who deliberately hold back your progress or teach you the wrong techniques to make more money from you (more common than one would think, this type is to be avoided like the plague)
- coaches who were genuine, but limited in their knowledge, usually teaching one specific swing style (double pivot swing? centered swing? stack and tilt? single plane? double plane?)

I have since learnt much more about the swing from my own research, and in the process find that I enjoy dissecting the swing (and helping others do likewise) just as much as shooting a low round. Made lots of friends locally as well as overseas as a result.

This is a wonderful game for sure. Don't let the score card or a time frame (when will I break 100, 90, 80, etc) stop you from enjoying it.

Cheers. cheers

well, i would suggest going to see my coach Tendy Tsai...

i was shooting in the 120 range and 110 on good days... i started lessons with him in Sept last year... i broke 100 abt 3 weeks after that, broke 90 ard dec and broke 80 in Feb...

so it all depends on how to wish to expedite your game...

to me, get a damn good coach like mine (i honestly would not recommend any other coach above mine) and get a damn good clubfitter like DGman... both would help your game along...

Bro Shamusan,

Wonder why, I need to agreed with you when you mention Tendy and DGman .. lol! lol!

Played a whole lot for almost a year, a couple of rounds per week, did not get anywhere. Stopped, and went to study at the range. Started playing again, soon broke 100. Studied some more at the range, played a couple of times, broke 90.

So, my impression in my case, I broke 100 and 90 from the hours spent at the range, not from playing as many games as I could.

What helped in my particular case - distance and accuracy.

If you tee off consistently long (say 200-220m or longer), and accurate, then you're left with a wedge or short iron approach from the fairway.

If your approach is also accurate, no-brainer, you are on the green. No need to be bunker expert or chipping expert.

With GIR 10-11 times, fairways hardly missed (driver was in an unusual good mood), I could even afford to 3-putt many times when I broke 90. Hardly worked on putting (no putting green at the range,) so I did not even have a proper putting stroke that time.

But the genius of the game is that it is so hard to be consistent and to repeat. Phil came from behind to win Shell Houston Open, and then shoot four rounds in the 70's at Augusta the following week.

As for us mortals, we can have a terrible round, but have one good 'hero' shot of the day that sticks in memory. That's why we keep coming back. Else I would have moved on to another hobby already.
