Go and see a fitter. The dollar you pay a good fitter will save you a lot at the end. We can give you advise rght here (on line) based on our swings and maybe from our experiences as fitters but it won't be acurate.

In short, a good fitter will conduct some informal interview, analyse your swing and recommend you the shaft you need. Club fitting 101, right DGman? Wink

Hi,

Like stated above...going to see a fitter is the best option. You might be a candidate for graphite or even steel fiber shafts.

The ones you mentioned however:

NS Pro- Nippon shafts are a lighter weight steel shaft. Provides a smoother shaft flex, very stable, solid feel at impact, and medium launch (depending on the amount of tipping). Great shaft for players with slower swing speeds and who have problems elevating the golf ball.

Project X (5, 5.5, 6, 6.5) - Made by royal precision originally, now possibly made by True Temper. A very solid shaft with some technological aspects in there as well. Uses stepless design technology to optimize flex distribution and energy transfer. Used by many players on the pga tour.

KBS - Made my FST (femco) and designed by Kim Braly. Newer shaft brand, gaining some traction on the PGA Tour. Very good shaft with some innovative technology incorporated including MOI, arrow straight shafts from club head to grip, and frequency/weight tolerences that are very strict.

Dynamic Gold (R300, S200, S300, S400, X100...) - Made by True Temper. Number one shaft on the PGA Tour. Basically the old guard with respect to steel shafts. Very good product. Number of options to choose from and generally a really solid shaft. Not as flashy as some of the new options.

There is a little about the shafts you asked about. There are so many others out there. It might be best to see DGman or someone who can watch you hit some shots and really inform you of what would be best.

Personally the best of those I have hit recently have been the KBS tours in a set of tour preferred TM tp heads. It was amazing how straight the ball was flying......I am actually temped to take the black golds out of my adams irons and throw some KBS tours in there.

also depend how deep is your pocket....keke

I think Project X and KBS are relatively higher in $$$...and imagin u need to change for the whole set, ie maybe about 8 pcs....keke

and yes, i also think that a good clubfitter like BigFish and WizGolf should make your money worthwhile...keke

I agree with snowman post.. both Wizgolf and BFG are good. You can surely go check both places out and then decide.

Cheers

Good one Dan...by the way i met Will Yanagisawa in Bangkok yesterday and fitted him with 2 ZENs. he was referred to me by your good friend Joe Kwok. Do you know Will??? i was told he was TW college mate.

back to shafts....i would like to provide a slightly different approach for a quick assessment of what is right for them.

here's 3 scenarios....when you hit your 6 iron, do you???.....

1. create no divot and a rather low trajectory (you hit it clean hence usually a flat angle of attack)
2. create a little divot and mid trajectory (a relatively shallow angle of attack hence usually a slight negative angle of attack)
3. leave a rather huge divot and a high ball flight (a rather steep angle of attack hence the AOA is in the -2 to -4 range).

this is just the first stage in shaft selection and its not the golden rule.

your fitter should evaluate your stance and your swing to see if its a constant or if its occasional occurrence due to inconsistency in your set up.

you should also assess the feel of the shafts in terms of feel, spin rate (linked to trajectory, land angle and distance optimisation), workability, weight, budget, etc.

all said and done, a quick guide for the 3 scenarios are:

for 1 and 2, NS Pro, Shimada, DG and KBS (tour 90 and regular tour series) are ideal. the lighter PX flighted can also be considered
for 2 and 3, you are likely to find more success with the NS Pro Super Peening series or the heavier non-stock products. KBS tour series and Project X (5.0 to 5.5)
for 3, you should try out the KBS and Project X

i recently fitted a very strong golfer whose 6 iron swing speed was 103 mph with a -5 angle of attack on his X100. i have order a Project X 7.0 for him to try out.

again there is no such thing as a sure fit, a lot depends on the consistency of your swing, fitness, training and playing schedule and your preference for feel and ball workability.

Hope this helps...

DGman

DGman, that's really some good advice that you have provide. Usually mine case belong to scenario 2. Will take not of that or probably drop by BFG to have a good evaluation.

Looks like my next set of clubs will need to be custom fitted.

Now I just focus on my swing and try to get my handicap first...

Really alot to learn on the flex etc...

When we talk about swing speed, is it the upswing or downswing? I have a slow and deliberate upswing but would say my downswing is doubled the speed.

Measure the speed of a golf swing using a launch monitor. A launch monitor is a device that can be placed next to a tee or behind the golfer and when the ball on the tee is struck, the device will calculate the speed of the swing.

Trackman is very accurate and there is one at the Den that I used the other day. Pretty informative tool to help the fitter gauge what the best shaft options are for that particular golfer.

I am pretty new here in Singapore, so my experience here is limited. However I have met and spoken with Eric at BFG and gotten to know him pretty well. He is very skilled at what he does and would recommend him for a fitting/analysis. There is also another BFG at Keppel and I know they do analysis/fittings there as well.

I am sure some other people can chime in on their experiences.
