PostSubject: Muscle memory    Fri Mar 25, 2011 7:26 pm

I have been seeing lots of thread talking about muscle memory and golf swing ! Is there such a thing as conditioning muscles to have memory for golf swing? Your views please.

from the number of times that my swing has changed and keeps changing, i can tell you that the muscle's memory is like a man's on his 10th pint

I happened to attend 1st lesson with Tendy today and the same was discussed. The school of thought is that the mind controls the muscle and muscle has no memory.
Personally, I think the so called muscle memory refers to a person who keep repeating what he thinks (you see still the mind controlling) is the proper swing all the time until he is very familiar to this swing and it becomes an intinct whenever he execute this swing.
IMHO.
BTW this is my 1st post if it ever go through. This forum is great.

ok, now lets hear it from someone who is not tendy's student!

don't get me wrong, he is my coach... and a good friend of all of us...

but i'm sure we are all curious to know the different opinions and approaches that we all adopt towards this ridiculously difficult sport

I know the muscles of shamusan's biceps have good memory, they always rise up when he curls his arms up. Never failed Laughing

PS....Sham's motor memory is not just on the biceps. there are facial motor control too.

when he see you know who he smiles and when he sees me he frowns. the reason is not because of muscle memory but in this case an image memory or motor control.

the same reason why golfers with very good hand eye coordination can roll a putt to within inches just by looking at the target. they don't pace the distance, they don't think about distance, they just trust their judgement.

if you are blinded folded and someone tells you to make a 25 footer putt with a left to right break 3 balls left, can you execute the putt??? if you visualise you can and those who have tried my putting drills will know that putting with your eyes close is always sweeter cos the vision in your mind is more powerful than sight.

there is very little memory retention in muscles as they are reflexes and conditioning. however if you repeat something over and over again, those reflexes become more spontaneous. ....like sms, riding a bicycle or driving a car. the centre of these controls is still your brain but because your repeat it over and over again, you can condition the muscles to react in a more predictive manner.

can a beginner putt like a season professional. answer is no..even if the begineer has a higher IQ...you still need to develop motor control, meaning practice practice practice.

The key word here is muscle conditioning, not memory, if I may sum it all.

Just like football drills, if you get a striker to shoot constantly at goal during practice, the muscles will know instinctively how to when in a real match.
