PostSubject: Iron Launch Angles and Max Height/ Apex   Tue Apr 05, 2011 5:21 pm

Searched the forum, and couldn't find much on IRON launch angles and max height. There's heaps on driver related numbers though.

Found this interesting info on the net ...

PGA TOUR AVERAGE VERTICAL LAUNCH IN DEGREES {initial launch}
and Maximum Height of Ball in Yards:
5 iron: 12.1, 31
6 iron: 14.1, 30
7 iron: 16.3, 32
8 iron: 18.1, 31
9 Iron: 20.4, 30
PW: 24.2, 29

Wow! These numbers are incredibly low!!

Was hitting on a simulator with a 7-iron Nike blade Project X 5.5 Rifle, and it gave out the following data:
Shot Distance: 175.3 yards
Ball Speed: 117 mph
Club Speed: 94.2 mph
Smash Factor: 1.24
Launch Angle: 19.3deg
Hor. Angle: 3.3deg R
Club Path: 7.4deg inside->out
Club Face Angle: 1.4deg closed to path
Ball hit on Center
Slight Draw
Max Height: 50yards (approximation from visual graph)
Unfortunately the sim doesn't give Spin and AOA numbers ...

Seems like I need to try out stiffer shafts, and flatten out my swing a fair bit!!? But I'm already coming from the inside (see club path)!

Is it possible to come from the inside with a steep AOA !?

Try Different shaft like DG Gold or Upgrade to 6.0 or 6.5 Project X not rifle . Do get fitted for it ....

Ya, planning to do just that ... But a 30 yd max ball height seems impossible!!!

Nah duffader, ball flight really high .... Nothing like the pros!

Just noticed smash factor should be 1.33 for a 7 iron ... Strange, cause I was hitting the sweetspot ... That means theres more to Smash Factor than meets the eye !?

If you ask me, numbers are after all numbers. Look at the launch angle and u should have an idea how they are hitting.... DOWN! But then again, if you are really hitting 175 yards with a height of 50m, I guess your scores will be low as long as u put your shots onto the green.

Ps: hope the simulator is on the right club during your trial.

The distance numbers are as per my on course numbers, no surprises there. However, I need to bring my trajectory down .... Its reallyyy high ... And thats why im studying the numbers

A lower ball flight should decrease my dispursion, both distance and sideways, especially in windy conditions

Tourswing's 7iron club speed is like my driver club speed. I met him once at SSN, he aint huge like ZX or chipmunk hor, just regular built.

175 yards on 7 iron....that's super fast hands!

Ha ha no guys .... Swingspeed in the 110 range ... So get good but not crazy distance with the driver ... My d2 is on the way from the US and cant wait!!!

And btw my diablo forged irons have stronger lofts by default, so can be decieving ... But since they are high launching as well , i launch them even higher and lose out on some distance

The above stats are from a nike vr blade at swingperfection@ killiney

This is for those who, like me, are looking for a more penetrating trajectory:

Today with the same 7-iron Nike blade Project X 5.5 Rifle:
Shot Distance: 190.2 yards
Ball Speed: 123 mph
Club Speed: 95.31 mph
Smash Factor: 1.29
Launch Angle: 17.4deg
Hor. Angle: 1.4deg R
Club Path: 5.3deg inside->out
Club Face Angle: 1.1deg closed to path
Ball hit on Center
Slight Draw
Max Height: 40yards (approximation from visual graph)

Note that club head speed was only marginally higher at 95.31 compared to the previous 94.2, but the increase in distance is substantial (was consistently hitting 180+yards). This is due to a better launch angle, and smash factor! and possibly some inconsistency in the data (after all, this is not trackman).

Yesterday, Craig @ Keppel gave me 2 key instructions:
1.) To keep my shoulders more square at impact ... my shoulders were opening up quite a bit, and consequently my left shoulder being pulled back
2.) To follow through low and left ... I was previously releasing high and out towards the target line

Hope the above advice helps others too ...

Technically a heavier and stiffer shaft = more penetrating flight?

Yes, but a player's swing has an even greater influence.

I seem to have the (rare) ability to baloon a 130 gram shaft!
