ahhhh, gave that up, i had 2 before. 18 and this 23, kept only the 23. I use a 4 wood for that loft, after being traumatised by the 18 degree. Where did you get it? good price? i actually think the new adams hybrids look easier to launch.

Got it from Absolut Custom in Glenmarie, M'sia.

The head was only circa RM400+, which is only like, the price of a good meal in S'pore, I guess. And I can reuse the shaft on other heads. So, not very expensive as an experiment.

Traumatised? Oh dear. Thanks for the warning. I got a couple of replies from the US forum where some people sold it off shortly after trying it. Low handicappers too. A few who can hit it well love it and would not trade it for anything. A real polarizer of opinion this thing.

Proceed with caution then, I guess.

PostSubject: Experiment is showing some results   Thu Apr 14, 2011 12:16 pm

After the first couple of sessions at the range, the Adams Pro Black Hybrid clearly proved my swing was not good enough for it.

I found some minor flaws in my pivot, flaws that were masked by the other more forgiving clubs, but magnified by the Pro Black.

I tweaked my swing until the Adams began to reluctantly launch the ball, albeit occasionally.

You can guess what happened next right?

All clubs from wedge to driver benefited from the enhancements in the pivot.

My SW thought it was a PW. My PW thought it was an 8 iron. In terms of distance.

My 5 iron thought it was an 8 iron. In terms of ease to hit.

The most dramatic difference was the Tour Edge Exotics 3 wood, another unforgivingly open-faced club which loved to slice. Goodbye trees and OB right, hello fairway.

Also markedly improved was my other Adams, the similarly open-faced driver. The sound it made through impact was... words can't described it, so I won't even try.

So, look like the experiment is showing some results. And there's still room to improve, because the Pro Black hybrid is not delivering 100% result yet.

After just a couple of sessions at the range, the face is showing some marks already.

Seems the material used for the face is quite soft.

PostSubject: Finally got the Adams to launch properly   Sun Apr 24, 2011 1:46 am

Progress update of this experiment.

Swing weight of D6 proved to be too heavy for me; chunked my shots too often. Went back to the shop, had it reduced back to D4, matching my 4 iron.

So far, the Pro Black is proving more of a handful than I expected (hybrid? how hard can it be? or so I thought in the beginning.)

I could carry 180m if I make good contact, but I was not happy with the low launch angle of my shots, 10.1 degree launch angle with a dynamic loft of 13.6 degree is much too low. (Refer trackman video above.)

So I went to the range this morning, and hit 300 balls with the Adams, tweaking my swing until it started to launch decently with a nice, high trajectory.

Curious as to the changes I have done to launch the hybrid, I compared pictures of the swing with the same club before (low launching) and after (high launching.) The difference is quite unexpected.

With this higher launch angle, the extra hang time is giving me longer carry of 185m to 190m with a nice roll. Am starting to understand the appeal of this club.

Not saying I can hit it with impunity now; it still demands a technically precise swing to deliver the results I want. But it has certainly pushed my swing to a new level.

After that, hitting my 3 wood was a no-brainer. Why did I used to fear my 3-wood? Can't remember.

Seems the experiment is starting to bear some results. Unforgiving clubs can help improve the swing.

Wow, hitting 300 balls on Adams. This is what I call commitment to the game. Reading this thread, makes me want to buy one as well and give it a try.

When you get in the 'zone', amazing things happen.

Unfortunately, when on the course, one sometimes gets into the twilight zone, where nothing seems to happen. alien

If this revelation keeps up, the Adams may eventually turn out to be my favourite club.

At the moment, it is already an effective workout equipment. I get a good total body workout just trying to get it to reach critical launch speed.

But, it does not forgive you on your 'off' days.

Interesting to compare the difference between a regular flex shaft and a stiff flex shaft through impact.

Note the 'S' bend of the 3 wood shaft with regular flex, while the stiff flex hybrid shaft stayed relatively straight.

Note: There is some distortion caused by the rolling shutter effect. Still, it's useful to compare different flex side by side.

Now, let's compare my low-launching 'before' swing with my higher-launching 'after' swing with the hybrid.

Note in the picture on the right the shaft is starting to show the 'S' curve, just like the 3 wood in the picture above.

Also, the ball is already noticeably higher in the right picture, resulting is a much higher launch angle and higher trajectory.

Bro, why are you in a low mood?

A bad day at the golf course is better than a good day at work. Very Happy

Go play a few rounds or whack a few hundred balls at the range (or better yet, get a hybrid like this and learn to hit it well) and you'll soon cheer up.

This club is for swing workout only; don't worry, I won't dare to take it to the course yet.

But Duncan did tell me I am beginning to outgrow my Project X 5.5. He reckons I should look at 6.0. Look what this Adams hybrid did to me. By building up my swing muscles, it will cost me money in more ways than one. OMG.

Hope you cheer up soon.

Went to the range today, preparing myself to give the clubs in the bag a good workout.

Went through the 56 deg wedge, the 8 iron, the 3 wood, the driver, properly warmed up, and then fired up this bad boy.

Guess what? The Pro Black is starting to carry distances I never expected, and is beginning to challenge (almost) the notoriously long TEE 3 wood. Carried around 190m today. A couple of good shots even reached the fence at the end of the range, which is around 200m. It was a cloudy, damp day too.

So, now that I am finally activating the shaft and the club, it is showing me what it is capable of. The face is made of maraging steel, which I had to look up - Maraging steels (portmanteau of "martensitic" and "aging") are steels (iron alloys) which are known for possessing superior strength and toughness without losing malleability. Translation - this thing is LONG.

The sound is interesting too. Sort of like a big caliber revolver, but with a silencer, slightly muted, but unmistakably delivering a serious punch. And at impact, from the sound and feel, you can accurately predict where the ball will land.

So, the Pro Black is my latest favourite club then.

To me, once again it proves that a brand new shaft needs to be "broken in" before you can really see the real capability of the club.

Interesting theory.

I do find though, that I can hit other shafts fine from day one. In this particular case, with the 88g shaft and unforgiving hybrid head, it was more like the club and shaft breaking ME in. Stretcher

After the Adams, the irons have also benefited.

The Adams pro black encourages a more efficient and powerful pivot, resulting in a fuller, higher finish.

When I swing my irons the same way, here is the result.

Distance and consistency improved.

Really? No Adams Golf in Singapore? I did not know that.

shamusan, it is 40.75 inches, so only 7.25 inches shorter. You could probably still hit it into the hospital driveway. Don't worry about hitting anyone; they can be treated on the spot for any injuries. Smile

I just cut the butt a quarter of an inch, bringing the swing weight down to D2, as per the spec in the website. Lets see if this plays better for me.

That's right. It's formerly the Sunway Xtreme Park. It's right in front of the Sunway Hospital, at Subang Jaya, near KL and PJ.

At D4, when I tried it to the course, it dropped on me. The ball never took off, but because it was hit with such a mass, it could not help but trundle, bounce, roll, hop and skip toward the target and almost got there in the end anyway. I laughed my head off at the sight, esp when my playing partner hit his hybrid next to me, which flew up nicely, but was shorter than my shot.

So, cut it a bit to bring it down to D2. The club feels both lighter in the hands and less eager to drop to the ground in the swing.

Was having an under the weather kind of day, so debated whether or not to hit the range. The swing would not be up to full speed.

I went anyway, and to focus, brought only this club instead of the entire bag. Spent an hour and a half exploring how it behaved to find the best way to hit it.

Even with the lighter swing weight, it still gave me a pretty good workout and after 150 balls, my shirt was drenched like I just jumped into a water hazard.

Toward the end of the session, the club felt really good in my hands. The difference two swing weight points made took me by surprise.

With a D2 swing weight, it feels like this

whereas before, with a D4 swing weight, as you get tired, it had the all the pliancy and subtlety of this

I look forward to playing this club on the course again. Can't wait to take another mighty swipe at the ball with this thuggish club to see how far the ball will go now.
