PostSubject: How to buy a wedge?   Wed Apr 13, 2011 6:24 pm

I've been using the sand wedge that comes with my iron set, and have been having difficulty. While the major reason could be my swing in the sand bunker, I am hoping that if I use a wedge (e.g. 58 or 60 deg), perhaps that could help me get the ball out of the sand better. I understand that the bounce on the wedge is something to consider when buying a wedge. Can someone advise me how to go about identifying a wedge to buy?

Hi

Normal standard SW is about 56deg and personally I felt that is the best wedge for bunker play. If you believe that you are having problem in bunker play because of your swing, then I think getting a 58 or 60 deg wedge would not help much.

Maybe you might wanna consider to seek a pro advise on how to have better bunker play, have the proper technique I think is more relevant.

Just my thought...

It is actually a misconception that the higher the loft of wedge, the easier it is to get out of the sand. If it is that simple, then all of us would have and use a 64* like Phil and sand wldnt be a hazard.

The bounce is as, if not more important, then the loft of the wedge. Of course you can manipulate loft, and thus bounce, by opening the clubface to varying degrees.

As a general rule of thumb if you play on a course with a harder(tight) turf or firmer sand in the traps you should be using wedges with less bounce. The lower amount of bounce will help the clubs leading edge dig down easier into the turf and through the rest of the shot.

On the contrary if you play on a course with softer turf conditions and fluffy sand (liek those in the Emirates) then you should be using wedges with a little more bounce as this will help prevent the club digging to deeply into the ground thus causing the dreaded fat shot

Gap and lob wedges generally carry six to eight degrees of bounce while sand wedges usually have somewhere between 12 and 14 degrees of bounce.

Thanks golf snowman and jurongtiger for the advice and suggestions. Certainly I will need to work on my technique with a coach. I was only wondering if it could be easier with a wedge, something like Cleveland CG15, while working on my bunker swing. I've seen some golfers on the course using these, and it looks like it's easier to use than my SW.

I cannot get the ball out of the bunker. part of the reason is because I did not follow through in my swing.

just to share,

i have PW (48deg), AW(53deg), SW(56deg) and LW (60deg)...and so far, SW work the best for me..
i have no technique on bunker play and my bunker shot are extremely lousy.
I have tried using AW and LW, the result is even worst...

finally, i have decided to take up lesson with a pro to learn the proper technique on bunker play...

personally, if i felt i have swing issue, i will go look for a pro and if i have an equipment issue, i look for clubfitter...

hope my sharing would help you...cheers !!

officially you can only have 14 clubs. The combination is up to you. Phil M had two drivers in his bag for a competition.

If you think it works for you to have 6 wedges, you can do so....

are you using a graphite set? If yes, is your wedge also graphite shaft?

I had a graphite set before but for the wedges, I changed from graphite to steel. Easier to control. I also found that cleveland wedge better feel than those wedges that come in a set.
