PostSubject: Golf ball peeling on wedge   Fri Jun 03, 2011 9:12 am

After using TM pentas from golf direct, I've experienced a number of times where after hitting a wedge cleanly, i've seen what can only be described as white remnants from the ball (that looks like white paint chips) on my wedge..

is this normal? I don't doubt that the ball is real since it is spinning significantly more that my titlesit dt solos...but am wondering why it seems to shred so easily.....

anyone experience this with the penta or any other brand of golf ball?

First, u using non conforming wedges, 2nd it's a 4-pc ball if I am not wrong. So things like this will happen. But one good thingthat u should know is u are hitting the ball right! Smile

if i'm not wrong, Penta is a 5 pcs ball...and that make the outer layer more vulnerable...

but feel wise, this ball is soft and lots of spin

Ahh.. my friend you've finally switched to a spin ball. Very Happy

What you're experiencing is normal with a premium spin ball. To what extent the ball shreds depends on which ball, which wedge, and how your attack angle is with your wedge.

From what I've heard, the combination of Pro V1 and Vokeys results in the ultimate shredding, akin to the ball going for a haircut. Pro V1 - super soft cover (more durable now), Vokeys - milled sandpaper face and CNC grooves (non-conforming).

The softer the cover, the more the sharp edged (and faces these days) grooves grab the ball, hence spin... and shredding.

To breakdown in general:

Distance Balls - Surlyn covers. Remember the old Top Flite ads that said if you cut a Top Flite, they'll refund your money? Hard, indestructable, no spin, flies straight. Some more expensive distance balls offer a softer ionomer cover for more feel.

Mid Priced Balls - Ionomer covers. Offers about three quarter of the spin found with premium balls. eg - NXT Tour, HX Hot Bite, Burner Tour. A softer surlyn blend cover, durable, some measure of spin and workability.

Premium Balls - Urethane covers. Most expensive to make. High spin and workability, easily shreds, softest cover for traction of grooves.

Here's something I discovered - As a rough gauge, if you bounce two balls off the ground from a height of about 20 cm, you can hear which one has a harder cover. You will hear a louder click for the harder covered one. Bounce it from a much higher height, and the louder click will tell you which one has a harder core.
