PostSubject: Golf, gaming and pride   Thu Jul 07, 2011 7:27 pm

Just want to get some opinions here regarding betting and pride.

For eg, you know that u are better than or at worst same standard as your opponent. Would u still insist on strokes anyway or bargain for as much as he will give? For the sake of winning a few bucks? I guess just curious cos personally I love betting and I hate taking strokes from people even though I'm a 22 handicap. Even if gamble against a single handicap I would always just ask how many strokes he wanna give considering our difference in standard and just take it as that. Most of the playing partners would be quite reasonable in stroke giving.

Maybe I leave myself open to being taken advantage of but I believe that if u wanna gamble then you should always hope that you win money by playing well and above your standard. Not because of strokes.

From reading the posts here there always seems to be people bargaining here and there. Even 2-2 or 1-1. Maybe most are in jest but won't your personal pride be affected taking strokes from someone who u know u shouldn't?

Or is it really super unfriendly betting type?

This is exactly what I believe in as well. Other than asking 1-1 or 2-2, might as well spend the time and concerntration to play above yourself to win those holes.

Thumbs up for you bro.

Touchy subject... Of course when it comes to betting, human nature dictates that we want to win! So of course, usually better players might want to stack odds in their favor... Thus offering less strokes!

Of course it would depend upon player to player... And sometimes a better player might masquerade as a lousy player and ask for more strokes!

I personally feel that Asian golfer mentality is the opposite of some Ang Moh mentality!
If one were to compare forum & forum... We Asians like to act "coy" about our "talents", whereas some Ang Moh like to exaggerate their abilities!

Acting coy is one thing.

Better player acting as lousy player is pure and outright dishonesty. And your entire upbringing comes into question.

Is it so hard to answer honestly when asked what your last 5 scores were? I belive that's the most accurate way to gauge form.

Another way is for eg if u lose by 4 holes this time then next time play get 1-1. Then if u win then next time level again. This sort of system based on equality ie since I won last time now give a bit of chance to lose back.

Sorry I also have to add that i guess sometimes there are games with thousands on the line so people are automatically calculating. I can accept that.

I feel that people should play golf purely for the love of the game and not bet.....

but if you have to bet, nothing is sweeter than winning while playing on even footing...then again, what sets golf apart is that two players of different skill levels can challenge each other and the strokes help even things up......

Yeah unfortunately for me I love the game and I also love gaming haha.

Also I feel it helps to have a little bet on just to make it more exciting. My favorite format is Vegas cos it has the most permutations. Like makes watching lower tier teams in the BPL more watchable.

Vegas is abt luck in my opinion. I tm's one time I play badly while my mate play well. But I still win money while my mate lost the most!

I am one of the one's who typically has to give strokes, so I understand both sides.

There are times when I am not playing that well, my handicap (now that I am an amateur again) hovers around scratch give or take a few, that I have to give strokes and it costs me. There are other times where I am playing well where I still give strokes, but I shoot a good score and destroy the match.

To me it all evens out in the end, especially if you play with the same group of guys. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. If you are the guy that always wins and you are playing with the same group...something is off with the strokes, IMO.

Integrity is something that people have. Golf has a funny way of bringing out some weird things in otherwise "normal" people. It is an interesting game.

Back to the original question....If someone wants strokes...I will give them within reason. If they kill me and I play decent, I know that I have been had and will never bet with them again. The only caveat being, I know them, have played with them before, and they had a "career" round. Then I congratulate and let them buy some drinks..... Beer

Lucky I got excuse to reject Kian's diamond proposition. Someone close to me sells diamond too. I can sell jade to Kian at a really good deal. Twisted Evil

about 3 months into my golfing life, one of the players within the group said that I had to start gambling. All this while, most of my khakis never preseaured me into beting because they knew I was very new.

I told myself why not so I agreed. I asked him what was the deal? He said 250K/250K/ 500K. (Dont worry, it is in VND, not $$$.) I said on, and how many strokes he give me per hole, He said i was crazy and he will only give me 2-2. COnsidering I still had yet to break 120 and he was average mid 90's every game. I was abit pissed off at him and even the other kakis said he was being unreasonable and trying to take advantage of me.

I told him never mind, we play. I lost the front nine, and at the turn I asked him if can adjust and he said no. Never mind lor, I just continue play. Also lost the back nine. At the end of the round, at dinner I paid up and and i asked him."Feel good taking advantange of people??? His face changed totally and was trying to defend himself. other friends also join and tekan him left right.

To me, betting is not about life or death, more for alittle excitment and fun. and within us, it all goes back into paying for F&B.

I find when playing with someone for the first time, if he is the first to bring up the amount to bet on, 15-5-5, 30-10-10, etc, that's the first sign of a potential buaya.

Next, if he insists on fringes (making par from the sand is called sandy par, is worth more) or escalation (making consecutive pars or birdies is also counted as additional points, worth money) then it's a sure sign of a buaya.

And finally, if he insists on playing from black tees, then there's no doubt anymore he's a buaya.

With such players, I'll say, I'm not betting, and watch him sulk for the rest of the round. And he won't want to play with me again, and I dare say, the feeling is of course mutual.

Statistically, if you're playing with a better player, and they insist on fringes (sandy par, escalation, etc) you've been had, because it stacks the odds in their favour.

If they don't mind giving you strokes, but insists on fringes, then, just say no to betting. Then, they'll say, if no fringes, reduce strokes, then ask them, what is the handicap system for? They are just out to take your money.

You can tell a lot about a person's character when playing golf, esp when it comes to betting.
