PostSubject: Feeling nervous on the first tee ?   Sun Jul 24, 2011 3:10 pm

Nervousness and tension are the feelings that we all experience when getting on to the first tee. Even the best players in the world experience these butterflies in their stomach. In fact they are more nervous than you as they playing for millions of dollars and most importantly for prestige in front of thousand of spectators week in and week out. It does not matter who you are or on what level you play, it is normal to feel a bit shaky and nervous staring down the first hole and all you see is hazards like water and bunkers. Nervousness causes tension in the muscles which will prevent you from having a relaxed and free swing.

To feel nervous is normal but we need to get rid of the tension in the muscles. The best and only way to relax the body and mind is to have a proper pre-shot routine. In the next few posts i will be explaining the following steps which will help you play more tension-free golf.

1. Breathing Technique
2. Focus on your target
3. Practice swing and visualization
4. Set Up and execution of the shot

Happy Golfing !

Hi Golfers !

Today i will be talking about the first step in how to overcome tention on the first tee. Most amateur golfers just wan wack golf balls when they practice and forget to practice how to relax aswell. You will be amazed how much better you will strike the ball when you feel relaxed. Here is step one:

1. Breathing Technique

I have some students before asking me if they need to breath when they swing the club. I could not answer the question because the subconscious is in control of that. Do you think of breathing while you walking ?? Off course not !...so the more you can allow things to happen naturally and the less you think out of the conscious mind the better. But its easier said than done right !!

Breathing properly is the best way of relaxing the body and still the mind. Tension = Nervousness and here is how to create a proper breating technique to make you swing the club more freely :

- Make sure to breathe when doing warm-ups and stretching before teeing off. Inhale slowing through your nose counting to three and then exhale slowly out through your mouth counting to three. This slow 3/3 breathing technique will help you to relax your muscles and clear your mind. When your body and mind are relaxed the subconscious is more easily connected. This relaxation of the body further induces the subconscious to perform freely.

While doing the breathing technique, close your eyes and feel that every muscles in your body from your toes up to your neck is relaxed ( most importantly is the hands ) You are now relaxed and ready to tee off.

Next time you have a game on the course try breathing between shots and try not to think about the game. Remember when you had your best round before ? It happened naturally and you had fun between shots .It's impossible to concentrate for 4 hours non stop so try to switch off after every shot and switch back on when its your turn to play the shot. What i do in tournaments is i will take my clove off after every shot and that gives me the switch off feeling. Putting my clove back on when its my turn to play gives me the feeling of switching back on. Try It !!!

Hope this will help you guys !

Next post will be about how to FOCUS ON YOUR TARGET and how to eleminate that negative thoughts.

Happy Golfing !

Great stuff Adriaan.

It's such simple common sense that we take breathing for granted. So much so that we underrate breathing as a tool to calm oneself.

Agree with Birdman it's common sense to use breathing as a calm-down tool.

I also read with interest that Adriaan uses the remove-glove approach to switch off after one shot, because I do that personally to take the mind off the last stroke - sort of asking the mind to think of something else other than the shot itself. It helps for me.

I play competitve sports before taking up golf so this breathing technique is not new to me. However, I tend to like a bit of tension in me cos it builds the adrenalin inside the body and I personally think it gives me the extra bit to play better. Not too much that you become rigid but enough to give u the extra kick which maybe enough to win you that wager ! Haha

I talk to the caddie (if any) to relieve any tension.

Else, chit chat with my flightmate.

I usually rub my palms at the first tee box before I tee off to chase the jitters away ...

I just tell myself that taking a walk through the bushes/shrubs to look for my ball isn't too bad a way to warm up...
