PostSubject: How to increase distance?   Sun Sep 13, 2009 9:12 pm

Hey guys,

I started learning golf about half a year ago and have been trying to find a swing I am comfortable with. So far, have managed to hit my golf ball straight 75% of the time but only for around 110-120 with my 7 iron for most of my shots.

I took a video of my iron swing with my mobile today and thought that I can get some inputs on whether there are any major flaws in my swing that is affecting the distance of my shots. Swing

to me, it looks like a bit of reverse pivot and breaking of left wrist on impact....

The pros here can tell better...

I am not well verse enough even to analyze my swing...so shant dive into that. But I can say that if all things remain status quo with my swing.....using titlest ball will get me more distance......eg. fm tee.....I carry around 20m more with titilest as compared to my normal non-betting ball

Not really, normally its straight, on occasions when it does not go where I aim, it goes right (not a fade or slice).

I not too sure, just my 2 cents. the swing looks like is abit on the inside hence you are losing the potential arc that you can get. And the release of the wrist is abit too early. So if your tempo is a bit off, then you club face will be slightly open on impact.

weesern hit the nail on the head. Reverse pivot and left wrist breaking down at impact.

Now the secret is to find the cause of this problem.
The main cause is that the swing starts in the wrong order. Already inverted

This will cause the incorrect turning direction, hence the reverse pivot. The arms from behind view would look very flat.

This will cause a loss of lag/store up on the way down and a poor impact position

To create power you need alot of lag and compression on the ball at impact like this:

To do this you are best to correct your set up and turning direction

This will correct your reverse pivot and help increase your lag

If it starts in the wrong place it will usually end in the wrong place at impact.

Hope this explains your lack of distance

My pleasure. Thats what I do, analyse and fix swings. Like if you have cancer, you go see a doctor/specialist lol!

This is a common reason for lack of distance, topping and a high ball flight. I see many swings like this on a daily basis. Easy to fix if set up is corrected. Beer

Thanks Weesern and Paul, i had a nagging feeling that my set up looks 'wierd' when compared to other better players, now I know what's the problem. cheers

the first few seconds of the video I thought he was moving his swing in slow-mo.. then i realised that it was actually a slowed-down vid! Awesome cam for a phone... i tried the same thing with my phone and it sucks.... Sad

its a Samsung I8910. Bought it recently, my first samsung phone and have no regrets, except for the somewhat weak battery. (1-2 days max)

It can take video at slow mo of 1/4 or 1/8 speed.

My unproven tips:
#1 Imagination is a very berry powerful tool...that is what I tell myself before and after the game......
#2 During my self-motivation timeslot after the game, I used a lot of ' If ' to console myself....that way, I apply #1 (as above) to comfort myself for any lacking in distance.

Don't keep you head down too long. Look at Annika. Head is up before she hits it
