I know this is illegal but how do you find out anyone using this old trick?

Tried them on the range and does seem to work.

Anyone? New here

This is new to me. What does vaseline on a driver do?

In the early 80's... Wow I am old... Someone cane up with this concept and it was sold in golf shops, it came in a toothpaste like tube simply called grease.

What it does is hold the ball on the clubfacd a fraction longer and reduces spin, so less slicing/hooking.

If your swing was bad though it made little diffence to outcome... And it is cheating Very Happy

Apparently it's something used by pro baseball pitchers too to take spin off the baseball, introducing an unpredictable floating sort of flight to confuse the batter.

"The most mysterious pitch in baseball is the knuckleball. It's a hard pitch to master, and its behavior is unpredictable. Tom Candiotti, celebrated knuckleball pitcher, describes it this way: "It's a strange pitch. You throw the pitch so there's little or no spin at all to it. And I guess when you do that . . . when you throw a ball that has little or no rotation on it . . . the ball . . . I don't know if it's wind or something . . . but it makes it move certain ways -- up, down, around. Sometimes you throw it in circles."

The ideal knuckleball rotates about a quarter of a revolution on its way to the plate. Without the stabilizing gyroscopic effect of spinning, the ball becomes aerodynamically unstable, and the raised seams create an uneven flow of air over the surface of the ball, pushing it one way or another."

Apart from taking spin of the golf ball, whether vaseline has the same effect of making the golf ball unstable in flight or not, only those with a PhD can give a more educated answer.

Oh. Sounds a little preposterous but who am I to talk?

It just seems odd that lubricating the driver would help reduce spin. I would have guessed the opposite.

No arguments so whatever there.

But how does one detect or catch such cheater? dont really wanna smell one's driver hahaha

Would really come in handy in a high roller's game though, which they use to golf in Vegas.

If we bring a bottle of vaseline on the course, we'll NEVER hear the end of it.

I'd actually thought of putting scotch tape on the driver's face to see what will the effect be. Proly will try that out at the range tomorrow Razz

hahaha that would a sight to remember! lol!

right, lets try them out (driver) this weekend and lets hear the feedback.

At the range this evening, I tried a thin layer by swiping with a cloth. Need to reapply after 3-4 drives.

Drives held a good line but maybe I had a good night haha

Sounds interesting and "new" to me Question

Guess it won't be cheating if the whole flight is doing the same Rolling Eyes

Eh..... why is it cheating? Let's just say that if I start off a round with such coating and does not re-apply (i.e. not changing the characteristics of my clubs during play). Does it infringe the Rules?
