PostSubject: Backache and golf   Wed Sep 07, 2011 4:14 pm

I have a history of backache from an injury sustained during school days.
I have played golf for several years now albeit with backaches and restricted body twists.

Any suggestions how I can improve without injuring my back or hitting it further?

Thanks.

backache......I am one of the sufferers...

I cant imagine, how less bad my golf will be if I am back-healthy???

anyways, I live with it by doing half swing..though many call it quarter swing....and I accept that I take more shots to reach green than others.

do let me know when you find an answer.....Asian senior tour might be waiting for me..hahahahahah

Physiotherapist is the solution mate . I don't know any in singapore search for some who are golf specific that they understand how golf swing work . it actually help you on long term to make some part of your back more strengthen and flexible by giving exercise to do at home and also prior the game. I'll tell you that most Profesional go to physiotherapist . the one i know is the women US open champion she work with my physio for the pre-season.

Another fact i know , everytime you swing a golf swing ,you put 8 time your body weigh on your back....

Could it be improper swing posture that are causing those backaches some of you guys are experiencing?
Maybe don't try to play if it's really hurting, it will only aggravate it.

Chiropractor!!! I tried one (referred by my Orthopaedic) at Shaw House (forget the name of the chiro clinic) and that Chiropractor treat me by helping me improve and strengthen area where i need to be healthy for golf.

Although I am still living with the lower backache but at least I now know how to take care of my back and strengthen it when it hurt.

Have to live with it as long as you like golf!

What I have gone through seems to concur with the article.

I lost weight (6 kilos from my heaviest weight), warmed up with wedges before hitting full shots at the range, learnt to swing with a correct technique, and my back now, touch wood, feels better than it did before I took up golf.

Sitting around, either in my car or at the office, was more harmful to my back than golf.

Depends on how severe ur back injury is. have u gone for an MRI? i have slip disc. comes and goes. on bad days.. legs and feet go numb. i find that acupuncture is the best, but its not a long term solution. doing back strengthening exercises will help. that's why seeing a physio and start working out ur back more might be the best thing to do. my sin seh always says..."SLEEP MORE LA!!! DON"T SLEEP SO LATE EVERYDAY!"

honestly.. i was told by the staff at TTSH that their golf clinic is damn hopeless. so i wouldn't waste ur money there.

yoga is also very very good. pilates will help too. a few minutes spent stretching properly b4 a round can greatly reduce further injury.. and u may even play better as u gain flexibility. Wink

take short cuts to recovery, and u might end up with more injuries.. and end up not being able to play anymore.(touch wood). but the back is really something not to be taken lightly.

warm up and stretching helps prevent injuries. Core exercise will strenghten the muscle provide you get enough sleep and eat well.

I did go to gym very often (3 times a week) in general and also to fix my injured back, now at 80% condition compared to my peak, not so bad in 3 months.

Don't take short cut on back muscle recovery, you will end up worst. On severe cases you might not be able to golf anymore. As the saying goes, don't play play, it's no joke.

Cheers.

I have always maintained that a good golf swing should not hurt. Because if it hurts, it's not good for your body, and therefore, it can't be good in the long run.

Two days ago, my lower right back started hurting. WTF?!?

I reviewed some recent changes I made, and true enough, since the changes worked so well, I was overdoing them, causing imbalance on my right side. Once I eased back a bit on this, the pain went away.

Goes to show, we need to be vigilant not to let over-enthusiasm cause bad mechanics that compromises our back.

So, I would also look into the swing mechanics itself, and identify any issue which may be putting undue stress on the back.

I use to go for massage for all my pain and ache from my neck, shoulder and back.

Lately found a cheap way of doing it, go for a slow continuous jog for more than 40mins once a week.
All my ache go away and muscle more relax. Short duration jog do not seem to help.
