Thanks bro Slicer for this topic. I am just like you now and in fact I am losing interest in this wonderful game. I used to play in the mid 80s and low 90s but now I am struggling to break 100. It all started when I wanted to drive my ball longer and now I can't even find fairways. They are so right. I need to set small goals. I need to play par 3 like par 4 and par 4 like par 5.
After reading your thread it really calm me down. Now I am so eager to play my next game with this mindset and I hope that you can play your best game again. Cheers bro.

You are welcome and good for you bro jojo. I benefit and learn allot from everyone comments in this topic too. It does gave me a different view on how i play the game. However, I had another poor round yesterday when all my regular golf buddies played to their normal standard.

Yesterday putting was only 1.9 avg but with a green speed of 10 ( not too bad for my type of putting standard), fairway hit 84%, no complain although I can only drive about 200 -220 meters only, Got myself 3 times in bunker (luckily out in one but not close enough to the pin) .... approach shots and chipping was like sh*t suddenly and hit 2 into the water, shank 2 strokes and blow couple of holes. Losing $ to my golf buddies is not an issue. Looking at the way I played, is really painful.

The only different was, I did not talk about my game yesterday, when I usually do over a drink. I learn to take it this time and silently analyze what went wrong.

I got to train hardly on my chipping / pitching and approach based on yesterday data but it can be the putting, bunker and drive problem in another day game. Just like my shi xiong Slinger had says .. need to have a certain level of consistency .. I am not there yet ..

The story do not go that way bro Dennis. It is going to be

" why are you at home?" " when you always go to driving and course ?" So, who is that women caddy ?" "you do not need to come home now, go stay with that women in the golf course "

So, after all, there is nothing wrong with my golf. It is my internal problem, my wife ! ... Opp, lucky she is not around ROFL

my goal in golf is only ONE.

its to ensure that I do not slow down my flt ....

So what does it take to do that?

I ensure that I am able to run between shots...coz my ball does not travel far most times

I try to ensure I can hit my ball consistently...even if its not far

Do I need talent...?

a little bit..but I sure needs hard work coz I need to train my stamina

Bro Slicer,

Do you realise what you wrote?

Putting 1.9 for a green speed of 10 is EXCELLENT! I wish I can achieve that. Sub 90 round for sure at least. Get it to the green, luxury of dropping 1 shot every hole, and automatic sub 90. Get a couple of pars, and we're talking mid 80s. One or two birdies, low 80s. Incredible putting bro.

Fairways hit 84%?!

Wow! What can I say? Superb. If I hit the fairways 84%.... and putt 1.9.... I am buying dinner for my flightmates, so happy I would be because the score would be nice. Very nice.

So, that leaves approach shot. Which you described colourfully.

Chipping - I've seen you chip. First time we played, your chipping was masterful. I remember being impressed. Second time we played, your masterful chipping movement was gone, replaced by a mechanical one. We spoke about this. Feel.

In other words, this game was quite similar to the one in JB. So the issues haven't changed. Except that your putting and fairways hit are now incredible! Well done!

Approach and short game.

Perhaps out of the two rounds you play each week, replace one with a 4-hour session at the chipping green. I am sure your feel will come back, very fast.

So, bro, from the sound of it short game and approach are areas to work on, but certainly much congratulations are in order for the other areas which have improved so much.

No more strokes when we play next time, ok? No wait, got strokes. You give me instead. Very Happy

Bro Lee,

- Putting 1.9 for a green speed of 10 might sound EXCELLENT! but what I did not mention was. I hit and hit and hit to get my ball close to the pin or rough then I do 1 chip, 1 putt or 2 putt Embarassed the data will show only 1.9 putt

As I understand, usually when someone have a reasonable putting data does not mean his putting is solid (just like what I say above). Someone with a high putting data does not mean he is playing bad because he hit all GIR ( much further away from pin and sometime need a 3 putts ). Except those pro and single HCP that hit GIR but yet so close to the pin. Smile

- Well, I do drove an avg fairway hit of 70 to 80 % with my drive but still do not mean that I am good. You may have lesser % hit in fairway but you drove so far bro. The further you drove, the higher % of missing fairway but your is only slightly off fairway at the edges. If you drive the distance like me. You will be hitting 100 % fairway. Not to mention, when you drive it correct.. it is long at center of fairway.

- As for chipping. Really thank you for your advise but your 60 loft wedges gift to me is killing me. No, just kidding.. I am still in the middle of training with it .. there is another reason why my chipping not as sharp ( giving excuses now ROFL )

- As I says. It is chipping & approach problem for now but it can be putting and drive in another rounds. I need to get all these department together.

I give strokes ? You better let me know how much we are playing for and I just pay your the $ before we tee off Laughing

Ah, I was puzzled when I saw 1.9 on green speed 10. I played green speed 9 two days ago, and I can't remember how many times I 3-putted. So, somehow got 3 pars and 1 birdie, in the our fine monsoon season rain, rushing to complete before darkness owing to rain delay, and simply got killed with the 3-putts. And that was speed 9.

I went to the chipping green after that. Somehow in the process of correcting the driver and wood and hybrid swing, long club ok, now like an idiot with the shortest of swings. As usual...

So, 4 hours at Glenmarie chipping green. Happier now. Chipping and lobbing starting to fire. Which of course meant that other parts will fail... like golf law or something.

Iron still hooking. Always hook, well, will be fun trying to hit the pin then. So, instead, 3 wood is like a super club. Can't miss. Long and straight. Draw at will. Inevitably, elsewhere...

Driver just tipped 1 inch, now dunno whether to look for the ball in the left rough or right hazard after tee off. Razz Which, of course, by golf laws, my bunker is now SUPER. Hard pan, pin far away, or very near, no problem.

Which means... you see what I mean.

But what FUN trying to solve this puzzle! cheers Honestly, if it was easy, many of us would be bored by now.

BTW, you flatter me bro, my drive not long la, and embarrassingly inaccurate.... look at how far bro DenMeister drives. Long long straight straight.

Back to your swing.

If you are hitting fairways % so high, shots from tee are good.

If you are missing greens, shots from fairway lies not so good.

Suggests to me you might be bottoming before impact, your swing low point is behind the ball. Works when the ball is teed up, not so good when the ball is on the ground.

Then, as you get tired and perhaps a little bit miffed, you start to muscle the shot or 'hit' at the ball, getting off-plane which may explain the occasional shanks.

When we first played, you had a bit of that, in the form of a slight reverse pivot. Thereafter, you have done a fantastic job of improving and the weight shift was much better. I was impressed.

However as we know, under stress or fatigue, old swing sometimes comes back.

An easy way to check is to practice from the grass at the range and look at the divot, whether is bottoms out before or after the ball.

If before, work on setup and weight shift to move it after. Ask your coach how to get ball first contact consistently.

Above all, you are in good health and your lifestyle allows you to play this wonderful game twice a week! Celebrate that bro.

To further encourage your spirits, here's Manuel de los Santos. His handicap is not his leg, it's 3. Played at St Andrews. Missed the cut by only 1 stroke.

Yes, the 60 degree is a good teacher. It taught me I must strike with a descending blow, and make ball first contact. Strict teacher, but useful lesson. Persevere... persevere.

The key puzzle of the chip is: how to get sufficient acceleration through the impact in such a short swing. Once I looked at it this way, a light bulb came on.

Once I could make consistent clean contact, feel came next.

shi xiong,

if your Pw gives u 110m with a P4-P4 swing.... why not u try 9i with a P3-P3 swing?? thus if u faced a 140m approach which normally your 7i will get u there, why not u try a 6i with a P3-P3...... work in the range to see if it works for u

i have good success with my P3-P3 swing, more consistent n accurate....

generally, the P3-P3 is my go-to-shot for all par 3s....

hope u find more greens....

as for chipping, think u need to see coach for some 9 holes... my short game has improved from my 9 hole sessions with him

shi xiong,

if your Pw gives u 110m with a P4-P4 swing.... why not u try 9i with a P3-P3 swing?? thus if u faced a 140m approach which normally your 7i will get u there, why not u try a 6i with a P3-P3...... work in the range to see if it works for u

i have good success with my P3-P3 swing, more consistent n accurate....

generally, the P3-P3 is my go-to-shot for all par 3s....

hope u find more greens....

as for chipping, think u need to see coach for some 9 holes... my short game has improved from my 9 hole sessions with him

Dear Shi Xiong,

interesting, add a club and go for P3-P3 swing. Why I did not think of that (am just too silly).

Thanks .. I will work on that to get my basic distance nail down. Thanks again.

Yes, it about time to see coach.
