PostSubject: Big gaps between 130m to 160m   Fri Nov 04, 2011 8:46 pm

Hi guys,

Here's the situation: i can't seem to hit the mid-long irons decent enough to unleash their true distance potential!

Here's the clubs (and distance) in my bag currently:

Putter
60 degrees: Sand, shots up to 60m
54 degrees: Chip, pitch up to 75m
P: up to 100m
9i: up to 110m
8i: up to 120m
7i: up to 130m
6i: up to 130m+
5i: up to 130m+
4h: up to 160m
3h: up to 175m
d: up to 200m

As you can see, i should just keep my 6 and 5 irons at home cos i'm hitting the same distance with them as the 7i! With my short irons, i'm able to execute smooth solid swings and hit a decent 100m with my pitch wedge. However it goes downhill from there, and truth is i'm never comfortable hitting above 8i.

On the green, whenever i'm faced with a par 3 of 130m+, i'll usually pick up my 4h, choke down, and hit with a more relaxed swing (to decent effect).

Anybody else has the same problem? What could be the reason for the difficulties with the mid-long irons? Would getting my irons fitted help? My mishits tend to be fat. Any swing thoughts that might help with my problems will be greatly appreciated too!

Thanks!

If you want a proper fix, see a coach.

try to look at closely at ur total distance including roll, there will be differences in distance for 6i, 5i, 4i even 3i. ur carry seem short because the with less loft so the air time will be less with the same speed.

u may need to gear up ur club head speed. hybrid is an iron improvement so allow margin of error and slower swing speed. i bet if you try 4-i the carry distance will not make any difference. full swing is a must. gd luck

U definitely have a prob.. like eiji said, its a swing problem, go get yourself a coach.

If you're staying in the east you can find the coaches in Laguna or NSRCC.. Good coaches there that can help you..

Typically if you have a decent swing, you will only start having difficulties from 4i onward , not 7i. If you already have difficulty with 7i, you may need more help than you think.

It's difficult to really say why there is a Big Gap on your irons

Everyone here can "give their opinions" on what to do.

However, seeking a Golf coach is one way to solved it

You would more or less have an idea whats really wrong.

Now if there is nothing wrong with your swing. Then you can do the following....

You could either step up your irons by adding 1/4inch on your 5th, 6th & 7th iron to gain some distance between each club

or you can drop your 5 iron, and buy a 5 hybrid, it can resolved your gap distance issue. One of my good Kaki did this.

Or another but expensive way is to changed your 5, 6 & 7irons to a lighter shaft.
Like getting a lighter shaft, like a 75 grams or 85 gram.
(Assuming your either using a 90 to 100 or 110gram shaft }

A lighter weight can certainly increased your swing speed to add distance

All I can say is that I guess you are still rather new to the game. Tell me if I am wrong. Go see a coach and solve the problem.

if you can hit a 7i 130m and the driver 200m, then you should have a moderate swing speed that should be sufficent to take your 6i to at least 140m...

just for the fun of it... try this in the range. Get a friend to pass you either your 8i, 7i or 6i without your knowledge... take a few swings at each and see the results... juz to see if it is a mental block.

In any case, as my nick suggust, i am just a lousygolfer so take my comments with a pinch of salt... seek the help of a pro for real advice.

Thanks all for all the valuable advices (including the "go see a pro"s on a "Ask the pro" section...)

Most certainly the problem is in the swinger and not the equipment... if ever (out of desperation) i need to tweak my equipment to cover-up for my bad swing, apart from the suggested lighter shaft, etc, i might also hit better with shortened shafts for my long irons?? Has that ever been done? Come think of it, i should just try gripping down a little more on the long ones...

Swing-wise, I suspect the issue is in my weight transfer during the downswing. For some reason for my short irons, I'm able to transfer nicely onto the left foot and gets very good downward impact. But not so for mid-long irons. I seem to have a tendency to twist/pivot my right ankle (right heel pushing right-wards, rather than to the left) rather than pushing to the left during downswing for my long irons. Thus the weight distribution seems to be only 60-40 at best at the finishing position.

Much appreciated for all the help!

I had similiar problem as yours some time back when I started golf. One reason is lack of confidence. And mistakes kept repeating. I didn't have a coach except for the 6 lessons I took in a group, but I read a lot of online tips, etc. This went on for 4-5 months before I realised my real mistakes.

1. I tried to hard because I know at the back of my mind the club is longer and I would keep duffing the ground. And I just want to hit it harder and/or swing it faster.

2. The uncocking of wrist or the release was earlier, perhaps due to the strength I tried to use in the swing process.

3. Too active lower body.

I correct all that and now I can hit the 5 and 6 without much problem. I went to the range and hit a lot of half swings with my 5 or 6 and gradually increase speed from half back swing. Eventually, until I can hit 130-140m with half swings, I took full swings and I was rewarded.

You just answerd you own question. You are trying too hard. Relax relax relax. It took me almost a year to get my 7i to 150m. And go see a coach even if it is only for one lesson.
