PostSubject: Which clubs of 14 do you take?   Mon Nov 07, 2011 5:17 pm

Im pretty new to this golf thing so just wondering how do i optimize the 14 clubs allowance i can bring to the course?

1. Driver 10.5*
2. Putter
3. 56* wedge
4. 60* Wedge
5. P wedge?
6. 9 Iron
7. 7 Iron
8. 5 Iron / wood / hybrid ( havent really tried which suits me better of the 3)
9. 3 Iron /wood / hybrid

This is what i would bring with me in general. Unsure about the P wedge as 9 Iron n P wedge hit the same distance only more loft on the P wedge? And i dont see much of a difference if i use the even number Irons so i dont usually include them in my bag

So far i've only played the 9 holes @ NSRCC & JCC..

from what you describe, may be a

3 wood
5 hybrid
7 iron
pw
58 degree sand wedge better than a 60 lob. and more loft than 56 to hep you out of bunkers.
putter ( of course)

anything more may not be fully utilized by your usage for now.

you bring what will cover your required distance without too much of a gap. Depending of the course, if you're playing NSRCC, you don't need anyting over 180 meter. For me that is 4/3 iron with all taken into consideration ( wind, up hill etc). I'm not sure what your distance is, but basically you bring whatever clubs gives you 180 down to the lob wedge if you use one.

As someone new to golf, u dun have to carry a full bag of 14 clubs. Just what you need to cover the distance gaps.

joshyo,

I had that thought too when I first started. I actually did not own enough clubs to complete 14, and used to wonder why people would need so many.

Slowly, I added to my collection, and the distances became more consistent, and evenly spread apart.

Each club has a specific distance, and behaviour (easy to hit vs workable, different bounce for different type of lie, etc.)

Now I have to remember to remove clubs out of my bag so that they do not exceed 14!

if you hit it properly definitely.
I've ever open up a 60 degree lob at the range and hit the ball to the steel wire on the floor above in MBGC because I tee of a bit towards the back of the carpet.

And the reason I was having 60 (not anymore, since I replaced them with 57) was that my ball seems to be attracted to MBGC bunkers. Some of those bunker require about 2m height to clear if you are aiming to the pin.

Hi

you can open your wedge up to hit it over the 2m wall, or if you are not that confident, look for the lowest part of the wall (which is usually facing the tee instead of the green), take the bullet and hit it backwards.

as nientsu advocate, hit backwards is a smart option..... esp in mbgc

I don't think you need wedges at your level, try bringing the basics ! Driver ,3 wood... hybrids always make golf fun for begginers ..5- sand wedge and putter! Gotta save the space for the most important thing....

personally, i would suggest u just carry a 5w, 4H, whatever irons u feel ok with, and a SW and putter......

dun know what your score is like but if u play around 100++, i think the driver will do more harm than good.....

just play bogey golf 1st...... distance can come later when u reach a certain level of consistency with your irons/woods

Which is true... the more it is...the more confused. At least that is true for my game. I need to keep it simple as well...

Today's modern drivers are huge; up to 460cc. With the larger clubface, wouldn't the driver be more forgiving? Granted the longer length might be slightly more unwieldly to handle, but the large face should make the driver more forgiving that the fairway wood despite the loft.

IMHO, the old advice where the 3wd off the tee is a safer option than the driver doesn't really hold true with today's large forgiving drivers. I think the main problem many golfers face is that they swing differently when holding the driver. e.g. If golfer knows 5wd goes 160m, he swings it normally and makes contact and ball goes said distance. But when holding the driver, the golfer expects the ball to go to infinity and beyond and so swings as hard and fast as he can; and then hopes the clubhead contacts the ball and maybe the ball will take off and break the sound barrier and land in a different postal code or better yet, a different time zone.

Maybe if we grip lower, swing normally and concentrate on making good contact then the driver is an ok club.

I tcss only la, last weekend I used my driver and then ended up 100++ too...

But I digress, and more or less agree with slinger; take whatever clubs you feel comfortable with (but the 60* wedge; usually no need to use la...)

Hey,

just a suggestion....

Driver, 3 Fw & 5 Fw = 3 clubs
3 & 4 H = 2 clubs
5, 6, 7, 8, 9 = 5 clubs
Pw, 68 & 60* = 3 clubs
Putter = 1
--------
14 clubs

You need a complete iron set when you play in a long fairway specially when there's a lot of rolling terrain.

An 8th iron is needed for those lies where your ball is half covered

A 56 & 60 degree wedge is a nice combo....similar to TW wedge set up
You can de-Loft your 56 to 54 degree
or de-Loft your 60 to 58* degree just by adjusting the angle of your club head
