PostSubject: Stiff Shoulders   Mon Dec 26, 2011 9:18 pm

hi guys

Need some help. Once a while I will get this stiff shoulders resulting from playing golf. The shoulder muscles are so stiff and hard and my head can't turn at all. Have to resort to massage and Ba Guan to get relief. Has anyone had this experience before? What is the reason for this and how to prevent it? Thanks..

i do have this problem also... but nothing seems to help.
i even invest in those $200 pillow, thinking was the way i sleep but doesnt really help.

IMO, massage is kinda temporary...

i've learnt to live with it... just some proper warming up to prevent any injury. and swing slow and easy for the first couple of holes to loosen up.

as for my game this morning, i felt "tightness" on the upper body thru the 18holes... *torturing* Evil or Very Mad

Me too, I wear Phiten necklace on my neck and my convert the necklace band into a wrist band.

It works for me.

Alternative brand would be "Nikken"

LASTLY, I have a friend who used "Chinese accupuncture" to helped alleviate it

3 things that will help you prevent "having to cure"

1. always warm up, stretch and stay relaxed when you go to the range.
2. do not grip tight, its the cause of lots of injury
3. lastly, make sure you release the ball or follow through. digging into the ball on the driving range mat creates loads of tension for the elbow and shoulder.

And try not to watch Tv while you are lying down or fall asleep while sitting down.

sound advice WO. some may thing that its nothing to lie down and watch TV or sleep upright but there is a lot of stress on circulation as some TCM practitioner will tell you.

in bad cases you get the DVT or Deep Vein Thrombosis or some call it the economy class syndrome can lead to pulmonary embolisms (PE) .

What is DVT?

More about DVT

of course flying is not the only cause for DVT but american authorities believe that it affects 2 million people in the US, resulting in 600,000 cases and 100,000 deaths a year. thats a scary figure for something that was relatively unknown until passenger started dying on long haul flights.

anyway for the serious potato couch, its food for thought and of course, it has nothing to do with stiff shoulders.

You may want to look into what else that could cause you having Stiff shoulders. Possibly the ergonomics of your workplace. Like it or not, these days, most people have at least 2-3 hours of computer time, the chances are its a bigger cause of you having the injury than golf.

i get less frequent and lesser pain after using phiten necklace.

u can get one at Taka dept store 4th level, same level as Golf and sports Dept.

for severe pain, u can also try the phiten plaster. comes in roll n cut to whatever sizes u need.

Stop taking viagra!! hehe....

Joke aside, I've this problem myself and went to different doctor/sinseh and one of the advise works for me. You can try this yourself.
Put your left palm above your head on your right ear. Slowly, pull your head down to your left. Count to ten each time. For the beginning, do it slowly. Repeat the other side.
I did this before games & every morning.

This method works for me but not everyone. No harm trying it yourself. Cheers.

Are you talking about the limbs feeling stiff, or like swollen like that? And it will go away after a couple of hours? IF that is so, then you are suffering from excess uric acid. Just guessing here.

Thanks for all the kind advice. I don't think it's due to spending too much or long time in front computer as I will try to get up and move around every now and then. No issue with lying down watching TV as I seldom watch TV.

My first case of a severe attack of stiff shoulders and neck happened during one of my range sessions about 3 years ago. I had to drop my clubs immediately and go straight to TCM as I literally could not turn my head. Too much of those ball topping and ground smashing swings I suppose.

Now those swings don't usually happen so I suspect I do not warm up enough for my golf game that cause the stiff shoulders and neck.

Upon the advice of my GR bros, I have just got myself a Phiten necklace. Also I will incorporate a shoulder and neck stretching exercise into my warmup as shared by bro mojojojo. Hopefully these will help. Thanks again everyone for all the valuable suggestions..

Seems like you suffered a neck sprain, ouch. I had an incident several years back but when swimming. It was very painful and only went away after a few weeks. The damaged nerves do take a while. I used analgesic for pain relief.(Bengue Balsam)

For stretching, you may try the shoulder shrug or shoulder roll exercise. You normally see the swimmers do it before a race.
It really helps to bring the blood to your nerves and warm the muscles.

Hope you have a injury free time with all the helpful advice at GR

Thanks bro getsurin.
It's not neck sprain. It's the back muscles that seem to entangle and form lumpy knots. And when u press them u can feel they are hard.

I have a friend who had similar type of inquiry on the shoulder while playing badminton. You need to see a physiotherapist. They will know what to do these. You will probably need to rest a few weeks and leave them clubs alone for a short while.

ah nah, here's a great tip that I learned along the way from a pro. I wished my first coach had taught me this so I didnt have to battle callouses and fatigue fingers in my first year of golfing

when you grip, and even if you want to have a firm grip, apply strength with your middle finger, ring finger and the pinkie. The thumb and index fingers on both hands should be relaxed.

by doing so, your lower forearms and your triceps will be activated during the swing. If you apply strength on thumb/index. the upper forearms, biceps and shoulders will activate, which causes callouses and tense shoulders

as a side effect, you may also feel the downswing feels like a pulling motion, rather than a hitting motion.

I stop having bad callouses and tense shoulders after changing how I grip the club.

good luck.
