PostSubject: how to get distance with driver?   Sun Feb 05, 2012 8:27 pm

been trying to get more distance with my driver for the longest time. had it custom fitted yet still not much increased distance. avg distance is abt 210m-220m depending on the weather course etc. i know that to many people that is far enough, no offence but considering im hitting an average of 195m-200m with my 3 wood and 155m-160m with my 7 iron, shouldn't my driver distance be a bit further? would appreciate some tips from some, if not all shifus on the forum Laughing

FYI, im using a titleist D2910 with a custom fitted aldilla vsproto byyou S 60g

thanks

what ball do you use? I think driver has a lot to do with ball ... has to match it with your current swing speed

See a coach or get on a launch monitor like trackman the stats will tell you a lot about your swing

Other way is to get fitter for golf

I've just reqcently gvien up my quest to hit further......given what you have, I'd focus on just hitting it straighter and more consistent.....shld easily be playing single with those distances....

I'm in the same boat as quite a few of you guys. Been following advice from the golf channels and websites mostly to increase driver distance - I guess too lazy to take lessons. Prefer to go straight to the course with limited time that I have.

Anyway, just to share - the most recent improvement tip that worked from me is on impact. The more "lag" that's created on impact, you will get extra distance.

Tried to create lag in the past on impact, but always resulted to a fade or slice. But recently, a tip from Bobby Clampet helped to change my mindset to square my left hand on impact. One of the popular saying "flat left wrist, bent right wrist" on impact will create lag, and therefore, distance.

willbudiman..

It is time to change your clubs..

When you choose clubs.. don't just look at brands..
But really try it and swing it yourself..

I never know about this at first..
Until I try out different clubs at random.. just try it out..
I got so surprised at the distance I can reach..

So.. start going to those demo days and try it yourself..
Don't think Adam Golf is not good..
Don't think Srixon is nothing..
Don't think only Titleist or Taylormade can make the cut..
Try it you be surprised..

Swing Cheers Jump Cheers Jump

thanks for the quick replies guys..

bro zhenxua, my carry for 7 iron would be around 145-150..i don't get much roll with any of my clubs incl. driver which i always wonder why..and probably thats the cause

bro lisy, i tried a few different drivers since i started playing abt 2 years ago..i had the earliest edition of TM burner, epon af-101, and finally the titleist d2. also tried Grand Tag, and cobra s3 that belongs to my dad and brother respectively. the d2 is my most consistent driver so far, mostly straight with slight draw. i have no problems with placement etc, just distance.

generally, i should be happy with my overall distance, but it just keeps bugging me that in a game, i would usually come last or on par, but never more in terms of driver distance from my golf buddies, where on the approach shot, i would normally be using for eg an 8 iron, where my friends would be using 7 iron..that is what irks me the most

bro zixter, i mostly uses titleist prov1s, sometimes would be butt itchy and try out other brands. TM and callaways are fine tho i never liked nike. i somehow dont think its the ball but more the player in this case Razz

Mostly for most people..

It is the short game!!
If you can do well in playing your short game, you already win 70% of the game!!

Because.. remember you can only use driver once in a hole..
so better master short game to your best instead of worrying to improve your distance with your driver..

I hit my 7i shorter than you but can match you in 3w and driver distance, apparently you're losing distance as the club gets longer, and the most likely reason is good impact, or the lack of it

like what bro eiji said, go see a coach, one session could just solve your issue

Agree that short game will give a better outcome and score .. but still ...

I can understand why we want to get more distance off the tee .. there is no better feeling than hitting it long and straight .. rather than solely relying on the short game to save the bad shot ...

bro zhenxua,

u r the exact reason i cant help but wonder what is happening to my driver Laughing

apart from the driver, my other clubs seems to be doin okay..i hit my 3i about 190m and my 4 hybrid about 180-185m, 5i at 170-175m..did a fitting at bfg jakarta courtesy of the resident pro there, william, who happens to be a longtime pal back in college, apparently i generate too much spin. changed my shaft, still does nothing..maybe its time for me to pay him another visit tongue

if your 7i is abt 150m, that means your swingspeed is at least 90mph for your driver.... which equates to at least 230m drive (looking at your physique)

u shd look at your smash factor reading and your flight trajectory on the trackman....

or better, seek a coach..... cos it dun make sense if your 7i is 150m but driver only 200m

ZX is one of GR long bomber specialist.....his 5w is abt my driver distance only

AGREE!!! FULLY AGREE!!!

CONFIDENCE is everything!! Without it..
No matter how good your skill is..
You just can't play at all.. playing like a complete idiot..
Because without confidence.. you will doubt your every swing..
There is no way to feel correctly and gauge the impact..

I think you hit the nail on the head here.

Going purely by your comments, this is what they seem to suggest, which I think you probably know already.

Simply put, your ball spin for driver is too high compared to your playing mates who are one club shorter for the approach shot. This will happen if you are hitting down on the driver like all your other clubs.

If you learn to hit up on the driver and reduce spin, you have 10-15 meter to gain quite easily with the same club head speed.

Bear in mind, the ball will fly differently. A higher spin gives us a more stable ball flight. More precision is required for a lower spin flight to hit the target. For example, a shot with a wedge is harder to bend left/right compared with a longer iron because a wedge has much higher spin, therefore more stable flight.

But if you master it, you will love outdriving your playing mates and hit the green more easily with a shorter approach.

Cheers.

http://golf.about.com/od/golftips/a/hitting460cc.htm

This is what help me to get my driver longer.
I hit my 7i about 135, and my driver used to be 200. Now it is 210-220.
Ping G5 regular stock shaft.

Using this method the ball flies high and yet still roll. Maybe you can try it.
