I used to bring along my 60deg because the green were fast.
have to Lob my shot to make my ball land softly.

But when I learned to pitch or chip correctly, the 58 deg wedge worked well,
I can adjust it to 56 or 60deg.

Nowadays, I bring my 60deg if I am playing in a golf course I am not familiar with.

Your poll should also include "Yes, it is very useful in specific situations"

60 Deg useful for deep bunkers where opening the clubface may result in too much bounce and the only available shot shape is up.

Otherwise, which wedge (iron) is used for short game is very much a matter of personal preference, mine happens to be a 56 with 9 deg of bounce, almost default club

general rule of thumb is that the higher the loft, the more precise the contact needs to be, so some people take to the 60 more than others

However, if the purpose is to buy or not to buy a 60, just buy lah (unless u already have a 58, in which case, really not much difference), you will never know if a club works for you until you have had some time to get to know it well.

i remember a similar thread whereby good advice was given about types of wedges to carry and making sure there was sufficient gap and that each wedge served a purpose. Some players and pros carry 2 wedges with same loft but different bounce for different lies.

Example(s):
48deg (PW), 53deg, 58deg
46deg, 50, 54, 58
47, 50, 56, 60

Combinations endless, really depends what u want to do with your wedges

Wow, I cannot belive that 70% of you say the 60 degree has "shed strokes off your game" when less than 80% of the players on tour carry one...

Pro,

In your experience do amateur add more strokes instead of shedding strokes with a 60 deg wedge in hand?

Add + Add + Add + Add + ADDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!! haha.... it is the most dangerous tool in the bag..... great for bunkers but in untrained hands a killer off the grass....

What happens is one out of 15 shots with it will be awesome. 6 inches from the hole, and you will remember that one but not the 14 that went all over the place.... Beer

hahah ... I remember my first full swing with a 60deg on the course, think it was about 50-60m from the green, and I was consistently getting that distance with the 60deg on the range. So being the 5 month old golfer I was then, I setup to make a full swing with a lob wedge off a tight fairway lie ... into the hole 8 green at Marina Bay

I hit the ball thin and it took off like a ROCKET towards the guys at Hole 9 tee box ... saw it miss them by about 2-3 feet (head high) even before I had a chance to shout "Fore".

It took me a lot of practice after that before I had the confidence to use the 60deg for anything other than bunker shots for fear of killing someone.

Actually I'm very dependant on my 60degree wedge. I like to use it when I have little green to work with. Once a while I do duff my chip. But , that's golf for a social golfer rite? Hehe

Thats true bro, but when you duff with 60 it either goes 2 inches in front of you..... or skulls 40 metres over the green... I am not saying change, if you are happy and confident then that is 90% of good golfing..... Very Happy

For the first time in my career I am contemplating a 60 degree wedge, and it will be in my bag only when I play the Classic course... All other times the 58 is enough... Beer

problem with me is my 56 have 14 bounce (tried 56 in low bounce but not as effective in some situation), so need a 60 for certain shots, especially lobs on tight lies, over bunkers, bushes, trees etc. Very seldom used but certain very useful in some situations.

IMO for HC, more wedges is more important than more hybrids/long irons. Most HC have problem with accuracy from 6 iron onwards..a 22 deg or 19 deg hybrids makes little difference for a HC, not like they can seek the pin 175m out. Most HC also very weak at various swings with one wedge. Play different course, also different.

Hitting a bad shot with a 60 is better than hitting a bad shot with a 56 and thinking "i should have used a 60"

That's skill cause you can use the 54 to shape all sorts of shots which a 58/60 wedge can do Smile

Reason I'm thinking of adding a 60 deg is for those situation where i need to lob over a bunker with very little green to work with. Currently I'm using a 56 and open up the club face for these kind of shots. However, I feel that if I have a 60 deg, I could execute the same shot without having to open up the club face and this eliminate one extra risk of bladding with the leading edge for a shot that is already stressful in the first place.

Any suggestion or comments?

Are you able to check your ball quickly with a 54 or are you doing mostly chip and run?

Don't listen to the other ppl's talking nonsense about me la..

I don't know how to do those type of chips where the ball takes on hop and then checks/backspins.

For me, I feel that the type of ball used plays quite a big part on how much the ball checks or rolls. If I use a better ball, the ball is able to check faster. If i use my usual cheap rocks, the ball rolls more..

I read you are thinking of getting a 60* wedge for those "lob over bunker" type shots. I think you should just get it and try. I also carry a 57* wedge, but I don't use it enough and am not really sure how the ball reacts so I seldom use it. I guess if you practice hard enough, the higher lofted wedges can be a great weapon.

then why get into the situation in the first place? you are adding that one more club for the once-in-a-while situation?

from my perspective, i think not worth getting that extra wedge in unless u are like titu who uses that club when within a certain distance to the pin... bottom line: only add a new club in when it does help in your overall game.

opening up the club and risk topping the ball sounds like a more logical solution then getting one more wedge.

otherwise, hit backwards and then onto the green again lah. one more stroke only what.
