HAD. I took it out of the bag already. I am not hitting my irons as pure as I used to.

I was able to get 90m comfortably with my 60 degree, was able to chip well with it.

but after my 'break'... i wasn't able to hit it as well to get to 90 and I tend to duff a little more or go under the ball too much too often. so its out of my bag and i will be doing more bump-and-runs now... just stick to my 56 for all more 'cuter' shots now...

Don't listen to the other ppl's talking nonsense about me la..

I don't know how to do those type of chips where the ball takes on hop and then checks/backspins.

For me, I feel that the type of ball used plays quite a big part on how much the ball checks or rolls. If I use a better ball, the ball is able to check faster. If i use my usual cheap rocks, the ball rolls more..

I read you are thinking of getting a 60* wedge for those "lob over bunker" type shots. I think you should just get it and try. I also carry a 57* wedge, but I don't use it enough and am not really sure how the ball reacts so I seldom use it. I guess if you practice hard enough, the higher lofted wedges can be a great weapon.

Bro Ssquirrel,

Thanks. What you said about the ball is so true. My coach is saying the same thing especially in the type of green condition that we have in Singapore. It is hard to check the ball fast unless one uses premium ball like pro-V1. Of course, even with that technique is extremely important.

Reason I'm thinking of adding a 60 deg is for those situation where i need to lob over a bunker with very little green to work with.

then why get into the situation in the first place? you are adding that one more club for the once-in-a-while situation?

from my perspective, i think not worth getting that extra wedge in unless u are like titu who uses that club when within a certain distance to the pin... bottom line: only add a new club in when it does help in your overall game.

opening up the club and risk topping the ball sounds like a more logical solution then getting one more wedge.

otherwise, hit backwards and then onto the green again lah. one more stroke only what.

Bro MC,

Beside lobing over the bunker, i'm also in the process of fine tuning my wedge distance. Not so much of full swing, but those 3/4 and 1/2 swing. I'm tuning my 3/4 and 1/2 swing for my PW, 50, 56, and thinking to add one more 60 to have coverage for the 30m - 50m range.

I have used a 60 deg before and gave up. That's when i was naive and play all kinds of dangerous shot with it. These days i won't even dream of hitting a full shot with a 60 deg.

What you said about hitting backward makes sense. Often time it save more strokes than to "chong" and end up in bunker and take 3 strokes to come out. hehehehe

SD, just do a 1/4 swing with your PW,50,56 for that 30-50m range...

i even did practice 1/4 swing with my 2 hybrid for that 100m low low ball...

something for you to consider...

At full swing yes. MC did 90 if you read his post.

Titu lob wedge is deadly, normally within a feet if not in the hole type.

i think u should just get a 60degree wedge and give it a trial run for a couple of weeks

i love to hit my wedges, and i have a 60 degree wedge in the bag. it provides me with an additional shot option, esp when i don't have much green to work with. in these situations, hitting a half or 1/4 swing with the PW won't cut it becos the shot will either land before green and die off, or land on the green and roll off.

so i say no harm getting a 60degree. it's so much fun hitting it anyway.

just make sure u get one with the right bounce that suits ur swing and the conditions under which u would commonly use it.

Pat, remember this. Any clubs in your bag, with practice and practices to the stage of familiarity with it, it can become a formidable weapon. The word is " practice ". My go to club is my 60. In a single game, I could pull it out on the avearge at least near to 30 times. So it means more practice for me.

What would be the recommeded bounce for 60 deg? I play mostly nsrcc and for non bunker application.

wedges so cheap these days, buy and try...no matter the rationale..EVERY golfer thinks he is different from the norm and that new/different equipment can help him.

Heck i even bought a sub 400cc driver based on forum treads (WRX) on how a 460cc actually is worst (during the craze for the Nike VR 420cc driver TW was playing), just to satisfy my 'needs'. Cost me $50 but forever kick that idea out of my head.

Even tried the 64 wedge, got some very good shots and some very bad shots out of it....now at least i know 60 is the lowest i should go, maybe even the 6 should go (previously a bit obsessed about 60-62-64 wedges..chip always use 60..terrible for my game, many 2 even 3 chip!!! cannot even carry to the green) BUT if u never try, whatever ppl tell u, you sure got doubt. That 64 wedge was in my mind for 6 months until i saw a cheap one on ebay SG. Now is forgotten and peace of mind.

If memory serves me right, the bounce is 10 deg. That would make the lob wedge versatile enough for most situations.

Very polarised discussion we have here, and my personal feel is the same. Either commit to a 60 deg wedge until it's second nature to play it, or shun it like the plague. There is no 'buy and try' with the lob wedge, the learning curve is steep, but once you crest the peak, it's smooth sailing most times. Like a high powered rifle, it's deadly in the hands of someone who knows it intimately, or dangerous in the hands of the unskilled. The 60 deg wedge deserves a lot of respect, it will punish even someone proficient when he applies a lazy swing to it. Phil Mickelson himself has duffed his share, and he's king with a lob wedge.

Like Tituman, I have 60 deg. A TM RAC TP 'Y' Cutter that sits in my bag as an old faithful. I love my 60 deg so much I've stocked up on 5 different illegally grooved wedges already (the real spin difference is from the rough, not the fairway). It's unbelievable versatile from a variety of lies and can be a real lifesaver. And yes, it does take a lot of practice and experimentation to know what this club is capable of; I've duffed, skulled and shanked my fair share while learning the ways of this reluctant lover. But once you know how to coax her to perform, you will wonder how you ever lived without her by your side.

Here's a question:

What club would you pull for a downhill lie from greenside rough to a downhill sloping green with water behind?

Would you without a thought reach unquestionably for the 60 deg lob? If you have to pause and think, take your medicine and resign yourself to at least two strokes (one if you are lucky) to get the ball reasonably close to the hole with any other club.

it depends, if it is just rough, i will just the putter and hit like a wedge but not too hard or i may need to buy a new putter...

Otherwise, I will use the 56 and hit down with a sharp angle of attack and then PRAYYYYYYYYYY Very Happy

my 58!

Actually I like this particular situation a lot, just slide wedge under the ball, follow the contour, ball will pop out softly and land softly

I can execute this shot 8 out of 10, maybe even 9.

but gimme a flat lie on short grass, I duff 5 out of 10 with my 58 (hence I just use PW) Laughing

It really depends on ur swing, and the type of sand / grass.
also, why do u say non-bunker application? one of the best uses for the lob wedge is to get out of green side bunkers

but if u'r really not sure, then i'd suggest going for a lower bounce.

If there is a rough (even with short rough) infront, it is hard for one to control the distance/speed with a putter.

My suggestion is to use a 60 deg wedge; slant your shoulder to the angle of the slope, open your clubface alittle, weight shift to the front leg, lift the club higher as you swing back, and swing down along the angle of the slope. Do not scoop the ball, you have to swing down at the ball. No need to hit hard, just hold lightly and swing down smoothly along the slope ... You should be ok ... Cool

Exactly.

If the landing area is only the apron or green, there isn't much of a choice but to float it. A running rap with the putter puts you either in the bunker or short in greenside rough.
