PostSubject: Putts per round   Wed Mar 21, 2012 6:20 am

What is the average putts per round for the average player.

Personally, I average 32. Is this considered acceptable or high? Comments, anyone?

I read somewhere before than pros aim for 28 putts.

PGA/Euro Tour
Top pros average 27-28
Above average pros 28-29
Average pros 29-30
Below average pros 31 and more

LPGA Tour
Cant find the stats

32 putts per round is definitely superb stats for amateur golfers.

Average for amateur should be 36? but I suspect most of us average more than 36.

Putting is the toughest to master for me.

Dont forget ... Looking at putts per round without taking into account GIR is pointless!

GIR is too high of standard for most of us la.

high hcap amateurs should shoot for GIR+1. Along with 36 putts, can play bogey game hor.

Totally agree with Tourswing ... if you are having 32 putts with 18 GIR, you just shot 4 under, which is pretty awesome!

However, if like most of us, where GIRs (Green in regulation, i.e. Par 3 on in 1, Par 4 on in 2, Par 5 on in 3) are hard to come by, it means that we are usually playing a short pitch or a chip (or putting from off the green) for the shot just before the Par stroke. That usually translates into shorter first putts as compared to when you hit a good iron/hybrid/wood for a GIR. Shorter first putts will normally translate into lesser putts.

I remember at one stage when my contact was decent but my direction was a bit loose, I kept missing greens but ending up at the fringe or just off the green. My putts per round then were quite low because I was left with relatively easy chips that I could get close enough to have a realistic chance at a 1 putt, i.e. up and down, quite often. Of course I did not convert all the chances, but total putts were always below 30. GIR, maybe 2 or 3 in a round.

When my iron striking got better and I started to hit more GIRs, I was suddenly faced with a new problem. I now had much longer first putts than I was used to and I was not familiar with distance control for putts of this length. I started to 3 putt a lot, and consequently my putts per round increased significantly, although the overall score was roughly the same. The best example was a round I had at TMCC Tampines, hit 14 GIRs, 3 putted 10 times, cos most of my first putts were more than 40 feet away. Total putting numbers were awful, but total score about the same as other games. Beat myself up about it at first, then realised that if I have never spent the time practicing distance control on long putts, I have no right to expect myself to do well at it.

I guess what I am trying to say is that the total putts number in itself does not tell the story. Just because it goes down does not necessarily mean you are getting better or scoring better. e.g. 50m left into the green, hit first pitch fat, chunk subsequent shot and land on fringe, putt from fringe (not counted as a putt), tap in (counted as 1 putt) = double bogey. Same scenario, pitch on from 50m, then 2 putt = bogey.

Most of us track these numbers to see which part of our game needs improvement so that we can work on it. Hence, we can get a bit anal about the interpretation of the numbers. However, if you just want to compare numbers, then as a yardstick, preferably 1 less than whoever you play with regularly.

Also, can I ask if a putt is counted only once the ball is on the green?

If I putt from off the green, is that counted as a putt for the round?

For example, Par 3, shot lands 5 feet off the green. Rather than chipping, golfer putts and sinks the ball for a birdie. Is that a 1 putt or 0 putt?

For me, I would count that as a chip in, not a putt, and record 0. Not sure about the rest.

the author's findings also shows that short game is very very difficult to master, which I wholeheartedly agree (Duval would beg to differ but..). Statistically, we're better off lag putting.

I know I don't chunk my putts!

Thanks, I would also classify putts as those made from on the green only. Just wanted to make sure that I wasn't mistaken.

A total 32 putts gave you an avg of 1.77 per holes. I think it is very good for an average player. I also agreed with all, that it is pointless for this putting stat if one cannot hitting high % in GIR.

I record stats in every round I played. Fairway hit 70%, putt 1.8, sand shot and GIR but my GIR is less then 30%. With this, you can guess my avg score. I am still at the level to aim at the centre of the green (not at the pin) for all my approach shots except close chipping.

With :

High putting avg with low GIR ( there is allot works to be done)
High putting avg with high GIR ( work to done on your putting)
Low putting avg with low GIR ( accurate and distance control work to be done)
Low putting avg with high GIR ( everybody is look for )

Putt is only consider when ball is on the green. Using putter to putt from apron or rough does not consider. What one do a chip when ball is on the green. I will recorded that as putt. I do sometime chip on the green when I have long lag putt up the high slope. Again, I love to chip than putt ( something really screw up with me ) Crying or Very sad

Not necessary bro. You could be playing high % GIR with allot of lag putt. You can be playing very good score.

About 50-54 putts per round...

Ball on green = putt
Ball on fridge = putt
Ball 20-30m from green = putt
Ball in Green side bunker = putt

Reason for not chipping/pitching.... I suck!!!!

Ball on green = putt - Go practice.
Ball on fridge = putt - Makes sense
Ball 20-30m from green = putt - Practice chipping
Ball in Green side bunker = putt - Sometimes it makes sense if there's water in line of shot.
Reason for not chipping/pitching.... I suck!!!! - The more reason to practice chipping/pitching

This is golf!

is it even possible to putt from greenside bunker??? i thought all if not most greenside bunkers are fairly steep. it's usually the fairway bunkers that are quite shallow. anyway, i guess ur putter must look pretty bruised and beaten up. i need my putter to look clean and pristine, so no way i'm ever using it out of a bunker =)

Bro, believe me, it's possible. Some courses have their greenside bunkers on a gradual slope that putting makes sense and will help with lowering the score. As the saying goes, "A poor putt is better than a lousy chip".
