Yes, it a good set of irons...

Have been gaming this since last Oct... scores had improved and am playing very consistent golf since. I took the advise "when buying stops... training starts..", however, am now poisoned by the latest WMD at the Den... so as to further improve my game! Evil or Very Mad

As a user of these irons since inception I will add my 2 cents.

I will add, for reasons of full disclosure, that I have done some work for BFG in taking some photos of the irons and working on the ad for the BFG forged irons that appeared in Golf Digest Singapore.

The reason for my participation was twofold. One I wanted to help Eric out as best I could as he has been a great friend to me since arriving in Singapore. Secondly I felt the irons offered golfers of many skill levels the ability to own a quality forged customizable iron at a highly competitive price point.

My set up is 5-pw with KBS c-taper shafts. They are fitted with custom ferrules and iomic grips.

After several months in playing these irons there are several positives.

1. They feel good. Even with my C taper shafts (which are known to slightly mute feel) you can tell these are forged irons. I have hit them with the normal KBS tour and steelfibre shafts and the feel is even better.

2. They set up nicely to my eye. I like the size and shape of the head. It frames the ball quite nicely for my preference.

3. The leading edge/bounce has performed. I have seen a reduction of heavy shots that seems to occur more often when I first played here in SG.

4. They are long. I have gained about a club in distance gain. Some of this might be attributed to the lofts, but I don't think they are that much stronger than many of the offerings today, although I have not had mine checked or adjusted since I got them from BFG as they are working for me once I got used to the new yardages.

5. They perform. As a former professional I demand quite a bit from my irons and since I don't play as much as I used to I need something that is a little more forgiving but also provides solid feedback. This helps me figure out what I am doing with respect to my action. These irons accomplish that for me. They offer the forgiveness and feedback that I require in my gear.

6. They are officially conforming now. Eric posted the letter from the R&A a little ways back. This is very important to competitive amateurs and professionals. As someone who potentially could play in high level amateur tournaments having irons that conform to the rules set forth by the R&A and USGA is very important to me.

7. They are accurate. I noticed that I was hitting shots a little left the first few rounds I played with them. After a quick session on the range I noticed that I was playing for my typical fade, but the clubs were starting on my intended line and staying straight. A small adjustment and now instead of aiming left I typically just aim at the pin or a little left and the results have been pretty good thus far. I have not seen very many terrible misses either left or right. I think part of that is being fit for the proper lie angle and shaft, but part is attributable to the iron as well.

Negatives (nitpicking)

1. They are long. I had to adjust to the increases in distance as my old sets did not go quite as far, so it has taken me some time to get used to the new yardages. Like I stated before I require quite a bit of feedback from my gear and knowing how far I hit each club in my bag is crucial to my game. This aspect took a few rounds to get dialed in and as a result is not a terrible thing at all, just something that took some time to get used to.

Conclusion

I am pleased with the performance of these irons. As an active participant in the launch of the first batch, I am still currently playing the irons and am enjoying the playability and performance that I have seen from them. There are plenty of great clubs available in the market today and these should be included in that list. If you are looking for a new set of irons, I would suggest you give these a look.

LOL ... Dan ... I know you mentioned nitpicking, but I doubt that the clubs being Long would be considered a negative for most people.

here's a thought:

which other irons in the market that are liked by Pros/Scratch golfers (Dan, Shorthitter) AND can be used by juniors (see above pic)?

the closest i have found is the legacy black forged.

most 7 irons weight 270g, the LB forged weight in a 263 while the lite version of the BFG CB003 weights 260g.

i know for a fact (we bent the lie and loft) that LCB was the first to be using that and he now alternate that with his Razr MB.

When you reach a certain level of ability in the game you notice small details that some might think are only positive, e.g. distance gains. But for a good player, distance control can be far more important than being longer, especially with your scoring clubs. Thus that is why I put it as a positive first and a "nitpicking" negative. Adjusting to unusual distances can take some time and when you know how far you can hit each club +/- a few yards, variations in that can play havoc on your swing, mental game, and ultimately your score.

But I do know what you mean. I was just trying to be as honest as possible as I did have difficulty the first few rounds adjusting to the new distances I was hitting these irons. But after a few rounds and some range work, I have to say that the added distance is a positive... Beer It allows me to swing a little easier and more in control, yet achieve the yardage that I am looking for.

So overall I agree with what you said and perhaps I should have clarified that statement a touch further.

Another way to put it:

Being longer means possibly having to carry an extra wedge.

Having an extra wedge may mean some longer clubs like ur hybrid or fw wood having to go.

Remember its still 14 clubs max in the bag.,

Agreed.

But I think it depends on your setup and gapping of your own personal distances. Also it could depend on your ability to hit shots in between distances to accommodate larger gaps.

Now my setup is as follows:

Irons: 5-pw
Hybrid: 3
Driver
FW (3)
FW (5)
Wedge 54
Wedge 58

I have my gaps pretty well covered and I only have 13 clubs in my bag. Thus leaving room for an additional wedge if need be. And actually have thought about putting a 50 or 51 in the bag to cover the distance between the PW and 54 but I can hit the PW various distances and I like how it does not dig that much for me... Beer

I think it really depends on how your bag is setup and what your needs/preferences are.
