However, the topic I posted is....

Why do you think TW likes to hit a cut shot?

Because that's the best way to:
1. hold the trajectory in the wind
2. hold the green

The green was hard and fast, baked by the sun. So even Tiger would sometimes hit the green only to roll off to the fringe, esp in the back 9.

If he hit with a standard shot with a bit of a rollover at release, it would simply roll off. Many of the greens were protected by water or bunker, which takes out the option of hitting the fairway and running it up the green.

Tiger hit a 3 iron to reach the green in 2 for a par 5 to within 15 feet. If I'm not mistaken, it was also a cut, else from that distance, with a shallow landing angle, it simply won't bite.

A cut or fade shot has less roll, which leads to better distant control? Hmm...

I always thought a cut shot is a successful fade or slice, i.e. it lands where you want it to land ...

Just as a point of interest, the only shot with top spin is a putt. All other shots will have backspin or else it won't leave the ground.

Possible perhaps only when the core of the ball is way lop sided.

Full marks for creativity and thinking out of the box. Very Happy

But if you flip the sides, you got to flip everything else, so that draw shape to a right hander when hit by a left hander is obviously still a fade. But nice try.

Ah, someone who understands D plane well, judging from how this answer is explained.

Try it.

Align the stance way right. Close the clubface slightly. Execute a cut swing, as though the target is way right.

Try changing the amount of stance alignment to the right vs closed club face angle at set up, see how the shot shape changes. The stance has to point more right than the club face is closed.

See what happens.

i assumed that a cut shot is more of a fade than a push, if it is more of a push then it is possible. if more of a fade then i doubt is possible unless you can make the ball side spin in both directions... if not may need external help like wind

Ah, but you see, even the pro's struggle to hit an absolutely straight shot. They tend to have a stock shot shape, either a draw or a fade.

Because, as the club is going down onto impact, it is also going out.

So, if you can hit absolutely straight consistently, well done.
