PostSubject: how to chip from greenside rough?   Sat Apr 07, 2012 12:32 pm

hi fellow GRians,

I have problems chipping from thick rough around green. The clubhead tends to get caught by the grass and hence no clean contact with the ball. Ball moves 3 feet.

If I hit hard, I worry that it will run out of green.

Anyone can advise on the above? Do I use the highest loft club and try hitting under the ball? Thank you.

Cheers!

Actually i depending on how much roll u need and how deep the rough. Alternative, u can used a putter. For me it's depending on the pin position, very near I would use putter. Pin very far, I would use P wedge. It's all about feel and imagination on such shots.

a lower lofted wedge works better in thick rough for me... hit the ball from a steeper angle to reduce the contact of grass before ball... hands stay ahead of club face and follow through to ensure that you dun decelerate during contact...

thks enwee & alvin7379.

@enwee - I am referring to pin abt 10 - 20ft. deep rough. normal rough, np. love ur "feel n imagination"phrase.

@alvin - i used to do what u mentioned. it was pretty good. e problem with this is i find e follow thru a bit difficult. And also e ball comes out fast n it is hard to control distance.

Ya,same for me.If let say 10-15m to green,I will use my 8 iron to do a chip n run,but not to do it if in front got sandy.

Hi bro Beehome... you can open the club face slightly to launch the ball higher with a softer landing.

Opening of the club face might cause you to hit the ball right of your target.. so you can compensate by addressing the ball with your right feet ahead of your left.

Key is not to decelerate or allow the club head to be ahead of your hands during impact... if not duffing/ bladding the ball will be a common occurrence... I know because I do that alot! tongue

10-20ft? Is your ball buried? If not, can used putter, if buried, used a high deg wedge. But hor also depending on the green, level or elevated....hard to tell. Kengnam uses a 8 iron to chip and run, even that you need to read the green and know where you need your ball to land and how it'll roll.

I told myself when I meet this, just to chip near to pin5-10 feet and I'm happy.

in my opinion, if you are the "sweeper" kind, use a low bounce wedge. if you are the "digger", use a higher bounce wedge.

Hi beehome,

You might was to consider going over to Tanglin Golf Course to try out different types of short game shots. There is a wide variety of rough there for you to experiment with ... try out different techniques and see which one works for you

actually, if the ball is sitting up nicely (floating) it does not really matter right?
if the ball is buried in the rough, that's where the prob is....i just chip harder than normal.

I find it very hard when the ball is on a botak patch.....chipping from this kind of lie (to me) is very diff, need crisp contact

used to putt out from bunker. but after i get my zen zim, i no longer do that.....heart pain ah

Botak, don't chip with wedges. chances that you topped is higher. For me, depending on the apron around the green and also are you going up slope or down slope. Up slope green, especially the pin is all the way back, I may even used a hybrid to tap it. Putting out of the bunker works on certain bunker, not those with high lip. I used it occasionally as well. Your putter as long as the face is clean should be fine, don't worry abt the scratches on the sole, if worry, don't used at all. cheers

thank you very much to everyone for ur feedback. Much appreciated.

@Derek - where is Tanglin Golf Course? Is it a 9 hole course? Cow Grass?

@audi - interesting advice.

@alvin7379 - will try ur way too when i go practise

As for putting from bunker, i hv not tried this or using hybrid. How is one going to use these clubs if most greenside bunkers are v deep?

Tanglin Golf Club is in Tanglin, near Dempsey hill. Hybrid in the green side bunker? I would not try as it's easy to overshoot.

You have to be careful you don't slide the clubface entirely under the ball. Result? The ball just pops straight up and settles back into the divot you just created.

Beehome,

A lot of differing advice, all of which works for each individual, you just have to experiment and try which technique works for the way you setup for your chips.

However you chip though, the general rules are:

1. Always follow through (don't jab and quit on contact).

2. Have a rhythmic swing that's controlled by your body turn. Controlling the chip with your hands gives the worst control, believe it or not.

3. Except for the flop shot, keep your hands ahead of the ball at contact (don't flip the wrists). If on the follow through, the handle of the club points at your left hip, you've turned through with your body and kept your wrist angle intact. Good! If on the followthrough, the handle points directly to the right side away from your body, your wrists have broken down and flipped through impact. Bad!

Out of deep rough, take your medicine and and accept that just getting the ball anywhere on the green is a good result. If the ball ends up close to the hole, consider it a bonus. Opening the face in deep rough is very risky, even for the skilled player.

The ball will always run from deep rough, even if you use the most lofted wedge in the bag. As a very rough gauge, the ball should run at the very least, as far as it carries (depending on your short game skill level).

Keep it simple and just get out of trouble.

Use your most lofted club, setup with your hands ahead of the ball with weight on your left side, cock your wrists for a steep V shaped backswing, Keep your head still and accelerate into the back of the ball with descending contact, and try to follow though. The long grass will restrict you to little or no followthrough, but trying to followthrough will keep you from quitting on contact.

Search on YouTube for videos of how to play out of deep rough. It really helps a lot.

And Derek's suggestion of practice at Tanglin is very good advice, practice and experiment and you'll have a good idea of how to play the shots you need from various greenside conditions and how the ball reacts as well.

Have fun. Very Happy

thanks birdman for ur detailed advice. I will go practise, try out the different ways n c which 1 suits me best. From all the advice, i gather i hv to hv

1) sharper angle of attack; 2) hit the ball down; 3)hands in front of clubface;4)follow thru; 5)weight on left foot.

will oso look it up in the internet. Thanks again everyone n happy golfing!
