PostSubject: Seletar CC Reverts to Using One Lightning Warning System   Wed May 02, 2012 1:48 pm

Good news to those who play at Seletar CC and have spent hours waiting for lightning system to clear :-
Quote :

Dear Members,

At the last Annual General Meeting of 23 July 2011, the issue of the Club's lightning warning system was discussed at length. A petition signed by 111 members had raised concerns over the reliability of the National Environment Agency's Meteorological Services ("NEA MET Services") system and suggested that the Club to look at an alternative lightning warning system.

Members suggested at the AGM to run two systems simultaneously. After much deliberation, the Management Committee decided to adopt the suggestion, using both the StrikeGuard system and the NEA MET Services system. These systems would then be monitored for a period of one year to enable the Club to decide which would be the safer system.

Since the implementation of both systems on 26 Nov 2011, the Management Committee and Management have received substantial feedback on the inconvenience caused to members, their guests and private events at the Club. This has prompted the Management Committee and Management to review whether we should continue using and monitoring both systems for the initial one year period or to revert to one system soonest possible.

Safety has always been the primary concern for the Club in deciding which system to use. The data collected from both systems over the past months has been inconclusive in terms of safety and length of non-playing time. After much deliberation, the Management Committee has decided to continue with only the NEA MET Services system from 1 May 2012.

Thank you.

Sylvan Braberry, General Manager

For Management Committee

I hope the day will come where for the sake of convenience, they do away with lighting warning system all together.

just curious, and because it's not clear to me (as non member reading this thread)

what was the problem with using just one (NEA's) system in 2011? the reason for the petition from 111 members?

what is the problem with using two systems now? Is Strike Guard giving false alarms? Is it too conservative? If so, then won't the original problem back in 2011 be back again?

Problem with 2 systems is that if either one is on, course is closed. So, as you said, too conservative, most of the time spent waiting while you can see the neighbouring OCC golfers still playing.

I dont know the reason for petition in 2011. Anyone?

Last Saturday, we played at OCC, after tee off on the 3rd hole, you can hear the siren going off in SCC. We did not stop till the 9th Hole when the siren at OCC sounded. When play was resumed about 45 mins later, SCC was still closed.

We played till around the 14 holes before we can hear the siren at SCC to resume play.

I was told that the 2 system warning was a review of preventions of lightning related injury or death. It came after the Death of the golfer in TMCC where the Wife sued the club for insufficient actions. Some questions were raised on just relying on one system that detected lightning within a small radius. The second system has a larger detection radius and thus longer and more frequent stoppages. I maybe wrong but thats the information i received.
I think there were other issues like marshals untrained to use defibulator and providing immediate first aid.

HI all..

Read with interests on the supposed conservative stance of SCC...

As a golfer myself, I rather be inconvenienced but protected..

As most of you have read, Singapore is one of the countries with the highest lightning density.. Also, you guys may have read about the golfer who was struck by lightning while playing at TMCC.. According to what I heard, there was no lightning warning at that time, but unfortunately his time was up...

Also, geographically, SCC and OCC are quite distant apart... It is very natural and possible for one place to have lightning warning while the other one doesn't.. As in the case of NSRCC, TMCC and Laguna... So it could be very possible if OCC continues playing while SCC has to stop, and vice versa...

Thus, my stand is, better to be safe than sorry la.... cheers

Golf is just a stupid game we all love... But end of day, we still wanna go home in one piece right ??? Beer

Chien,

Actually OCC and SCC is just separated by the reservior, in terms of distance measure in km, it is not far apart. If I am not wrong, OCC makes sure of 2 methods. The first via MET system (similar to SCC) but at the same time, the marshalls there carries the portable ligthning detector and they will alway double checked with this gadgets on all the 3 nines.

You are right, at the end of the day, I rather be drinking kopi in the clubhouse then worry about getting striked by lightning. Safety First! Beer
