PostSubject: Guess what I found today.   Thu Oct 08, 2009 9:17 pm

i was just at the den today to take a look at the latest toys there. a certain orange/grey box amongst other things...

but something caught my eye in some dingy corner.

Golf Pride Tour Tradition Grip, 35" stepless shaft and mid-slant neck. The most important part, it is a ZEN. Perfect.

These are some other features and details of the putter.

Looking around, icebocc was busy setting up BFG's new computer, DGMan was on a truck call with some 'Nick' guy on the phone. Jeff and ultraman are busy working clubs. shotah was busy utilising the new canvas and net before the likes of monster S70B and 180m specialist come and rip everything apart again.

I just took this baby and left quietly by the back door.

Boss boss, I will return you later. Thank you. Smile

MC...this is too much...taking the handmade prototype out of my secret corner.

this is a Zen prototype made for the tour with extra heavy weight. its not meant for trial too.

if it comes back with a scratch you are going to be in deep s.hit. good thing you owned up cos Jeff had a bashing from me already. i turned my back and i am missing one.

I meant to ask you but i'd figured i would not be able to convince you as i am not wearing a HK belt.

but u were also so busy on the phone that i did not had the heart to interrupt you. might have made you lost out on a big business deal.

anyway, i will be changing handphone numbers and shifting house. i will let you know once i get my new number and house address.

Ok. now i have moved this to the Equipment Review Forum. It would be a more appropriate place to host this thread now.

Review of Zen Oracle Mallet Putter

Prelude
Previously from the toons day, when DGman first introduced the original Zen Oracle Mallet Putter. A lot of toonster then, GRians now have gotten it and many of those have sworn by it. slinger made some money with it. kinkipet, witnessing with my own eyes, sunk many long putts with it. Subsequently, my sister also got one. From her junior set of a Ping Crazee, she made significant improvement with it. She started making more 2 to 3 putts compared to her initial 4 to 5 putts. Quite recently, she also made her first birdie with the Zen Oracle and yesterday she made a long putt to save par again with the Zen. This is coming from a girl who ranges almost every week but plays less than 10 times in a year.

Here she is, yesterday, beginning the opening ceremony of her new driver TM Burner 09 for Ladies.

Technology
First of all, it is the RDE (Reduced Dimple Error) that really appeals to me. More information is available on the ZEN Website. To break it down into layman terms, it is simple computer-calculated ridges designed to reduced off-line putting due to the uneven ball surface that is inevitably caused by dimples.

The other brainless thing about it is how a hole is in the middle of the mallet. First of all, that removes all the weight from the center of the putter and naturally puts the weight all around it. With all the weight now at the sides, the swing path would naturally be straighter compared to a mallet with the weight concentrated in the centre and allows the swing path to be easily swayed with little additional influence.

Looks
Same as with the Zen Blades that I have tried. I really do appreciate the matt finish on top of the putter. It does not take out the reflective shine of the sun when you are gaming with the sun high up. one thing that I really didn't not like about the original Zen Oracle is the neck set up. It had this straight up neck that is flushed with the putter face. The new Zen Oracle that I have has a mid-slant neck with half shaft offset. It was the look that immediately got me liking this putter.

On the left, there is the original Zen Oracle mallet (my sisters) and the right one is mine. From there you can see the difference of the necks.

Performance and Feel

Yesterday was my third outing with this putter,

I am starting to get used to this putter alot. The first thing that really changed for me are the short putts. For those who have played with me know how much I will break into a sweat for those 5 feet to gimme putts length but now with this, it is brainless and most of all fearless, line it up and knock it in. I can do it now with one leg, two legs, inbetween my legs, backwards, etc.

After using blades for so long, another thing that struck me immediately was the lack of feel. Contact felt really dead as compared to blades where you get instant feedback after striking the ball if the putts is online or not. Fortunately, the sound of the ball dropping in the cup still feels the same and I am definitely hearing more now.

Overall

Statistically, this seems like the putter to use but to be fair, it has only been 3 outings and it still might be honeymoon period only. For the 3 games, I putted 37, 33 and 32 respectively.

Not sure if it is really a factor as well, but I managed to clock in my sub 95 rounds again also with this baby.
