Golf umbrellas are typically designed specifically for golf. If I'm not mistaken, for the better golf umbrellas, the material used for the shade has UV protection, the shaft is lightning resistant (not lightning-proof) and the shaft is light yet strong to make it easier to carry around.

No particular brand. If you do buy, make sure you check the specs of the umbrella to see what features it offers. Note that for umbrellas, protection is more important than style/brand.

Those big big tiger beer umbrella also have UV Protection, some even so dark the UV can't penetrate. con: Heavy, but if you put on a couple of buggies can make the golf course looks like a makeshift bar.

Just purely my view....:

Brolley is not necessary....if worried about tan, then wear long sleeve and apply tan-lotion or put on SKINS or equivalent.
If rain, nothing beats a good windbreaker...which I think is more necessary than brolley

If really use brolley especially during rain, I will be mindful to ensure the speed of the game is not sacrifice

....just my pure-ly view

Golf umbrellas are essential to the game especially when playing in Sg where it can rain at the most unexpected times.

Apart from what TS has said, When trying to play golf well in the wet, its essential to keep your grips as dry as possible.

I pack more than 1 towel in the bag when going for a game. Doesn't have to be those bath towels but something that will be used to wipe off your grips. This towel can be hung on the inside of the umbrella and it can be kept drier because of the size of the umbrella.

Bro... not to discredit you, but what is "Lightning Resistant"?? Btw, lightning rods are also made of graphite and trees which are usually "lightning-resistant" also can get struck down.
If there's lightning; don't risk it and quickly find shelter...

I think if you want to look "pro" then get a golf umbrella, something big with some "golf-related" brand printed on it to look "pro" hahaha.
They are usually huge so you and your caddy/kaki can stand under the umbrella.
Some have more "technology" built into them, which makes them supposedly better. But becareful if you put them in the umbrella slot which is usually in an outside pocket of the bag as they can sometimes mysteriously disappear. I used to have a birdiepal umbrella and I have no idea how I lost it. Today I'm waiting for someone to donate umbrella to me Sad

No discrediting at all, SS. I appreciate the feedback. Lightning resistant is not lightning proof. I suppose it provides the holder with some protection, albeit minimal. I would definitely agree with you that if there's lightning, don't be a hero. Find shelter asap. But lightning resistant umbrellas are meant for situations when you don't anticipate lightning.

And, lightning rods are meant to conduct lightning and discharge the same to the ground. Yes, they can get struck down but are more impervious (though not totally impervious) to lightning than a standard metal rod.

pls take the "lightning resistant" with a huge pinch of salt...

lightning does not need to strike you directly to cause sufficent harm and injury... enough said...

marketeers can claim whatever they want... e.g. buy this driver and you will drive 300m...

Normal umbrella is useless on the course when it rains and the wind blows. Golf umbrellas are meant to provide some prolonged shelter and be wind resistant, meaning they don't turn inside out so easily in strong winds, and if they do, they are easily returned to the original shape. They also should not rust, some do.

Guess for a lady like you Crystal, you want something light and spring loaded ( so you just press a button and it opens up). The light ones usually have foam rubber handles.

As with clubs, the more technology there is, the more it will cost. UV protection, windproof, indestructible etc. they also tend to get heavier.

If cost is not a matter, then I saw a lady specific umbrella by either Tourstage or Bridgestone at World of Golf. Very, very light and slim, also in pink I think. The smaller one is about $80 to $90. The bigger canopy costs about $120 or $130 plus (can't remember).

If you don't play so much and want to just shade yourself on a hot day, then a big one from your house will do in the end. If you want to buy one, then they can start as low as $20, but have to search for it. Golf House in Ngee Ann City has a good variety to choose from.

Or get freebie ones, from HSBC or Barclays Open. They might give them out. Think 2 years back, Nokia was at Barclays and they gave out nice light black ones for just answering a survey. HSBC they gave out red ones and folding seats too. Just check out the concession booths at these tournaments.

important points of a good golf umbrella.

1. at least dual-layered. so that wind can blow through it and you do not have to struggle with it on a windy day.
2. light weight. so that it does not weigh down your golf bag or makes it a burden to carry it.
3. steel/solid shafted. hahaha. not talking about fitting here. but they have those umbrellas with graphite/carbon shafts that tend to break under travel stress.

for those who travel or even leave umbrellas for porters (i.e., Malaysia, Batam, Bintan Games), actually chuck your umbrella into the bag with the clubs. most external umbrella holders cannot hold down the umbrella properly while the bag is tossed around.

I think the golden rule is that umbrellas are meant to protect you from shade and some rain. It's not meant to repel lightning at all. In fact, I would very much agree with kopiO... lightning doesn't have to strike the umbrella to kill you. As long as you near enough, you'll get fried.

So, when lightning comes, head back to the clubhouse if you can or find some proper shelter. Note: trees, buggies and beach umbrellas do not constitute sufficient shelter from lightning.
