PostSubject: Fariway wood - the most difficult club to hit?   Thu Sep 06, 2012 3:50 pm

Hello, as the title suggests, I think that the Fairway wood is the most difficult club to hit.

- When on the tee, it's less forgiving than the driver, which has a much larger face

- When on the fairway, it's less forgiving than hybrids because of its length. Also, i find that many club manufacturers these days tend to make FWs with a slightly deeper face. this makes it better off the tee, but tough off the deck - a prime example is my experience with Taylormade Superfast 2.0 woods. Bomber from the tee but crappy off the fairway.

Finally, Fairway woods are probably the least used club over 18holes. Cos most off us tee off with our drivers , and really only use fairway woods on Par5s.

So why do we bother having fairway woods? Just to try to get on a Par5 in 2?

Pls share ur experience, especially those who have mastered the Fairway woods - tell us how u got there.

Thanks!

Good thread. I used to carry a 3W in the bag. Ditched it. I then moved to a 4W. Ditched it too. I just can't hit FWs. Not sure why - perhaps I need to get fitted.

Seriously, I've dispensed with FWs and have migrated to hybrids. Unfortunately, I only go as far as my 3H so playing regulation is tricky.

Oh well.

i have a different problem, i tee-off with my 3 wood instead of the driver. But am unable to hit 3W off the fairway with any measure of consistency, neither 4W, and neither 5W. Thanks for asking the question!

I love my fairway woods.

As a matter of fact, i use it to tee off more den my driver.

Probably because its shorter than standard, but still the distance is very good.

if you have difficulties with the FW,

perhaps u can go to a fitter to get it shortened.

I hv a trusty older cobra baffler rail fairway 3wood that for some strange reason i seem to hit better than my hybrids.. it has quite a shallow head n works quite well for me off the deck.. not sure if its familiarity but its like my favorite club and a savior esp when i hv a bad driver tee off on the long par 5s...

I do agree that the 3W is the most difficult club to hit off the fairway. On the tee box, I think it is alright if you tee the ball up.

get a japanese brand? thin face makes it very easy to hit off the fairways. used to hit maruman shuttle i4000x but now not anymore, shaft is too soft for me.

I mostly use FW for a possible 2-on for par 5. In fact, there were numerous eagle attempt with that.

I don't use it at any other times. Come to think of it, that's the least used club in my bag... but don't have a reason to take it out for the above reason.

This one I can seriously verify. Corn's FW shots are scary long.

To a certain extend yes one of the hardest to hit esp if the lie isn't that ideal

But one of the best to shape shots IMHO

I have never hit my fairway woods well until a club fitter "tweaked" it for me.

From the original 43" 3wood, he changed it to a heavier shaft, built it to only 42" and bent the lie angle (flatter, i think....)

From then on, that 13* 3w off-the-deck shots took off as high as my unadjusted 5 wood!

Lie and length..... Amazing stuff! Cool

I got it done in Australia when I was playing there many years back... Smile

Since I knew I could not hit that club well, I took the risk of breakage. It turned out very well indeed.

In Singapore, I think Big Fishes Golf (aka DGman) should have the equipment to bend fairway woods. Jeffrey from Golfhouse in Suntec can also bend woods. And I think Ben from Torque Golf at Laguna too.

Keep in mind, most fairway woods are very difficult to bend. If it breaks, the risk is yours, not the clubmakers'. Razz

The best deal I could negotiate so far is no payment if it breaks.... Razz
