i'm not looking to buy a handicap but the local clubs (estate/estateless) all require 5x18hole cards?
in batam, the requirement is to do a 18hole round where they test you and give you the handicap afterwards. <seems easier?>
get batam club handicap, then transfer in to local handicap beats the 'local club recognition' problem?

There is a new setup in Singapore called Golf Alliance...

They do Handicap mantenance for golfers like us who do not have a club membership...

If you get a handicap overseas, you will still need to transfer it back to Sg Clubs like SSG or MGK...

So far most of the people I know, who either got hcp in Malaysia or Batam, did not transferred to SG immediately, normally they took abt 6-12 mths before doing that. btw some clubs know of these short cut, so they even insist that you play a courtesy round with the green committee before they allow this transferred. I think it's fair.

For those who are thinking of 'buying a hcp' I think they miss the point completely. There is a reason why Sg hcp issuing bodies request 5 x 18-hole game score card.

I've no issue on those who earned their hcp regardless if it's from Sg, My or indo etc. apart from playing ability, there is etiquette course. I've joined flight with strangers and come across some who can play but completely zero etiquette. What a pain to be paired with them

These days in sg, it's so easy to maintain a hcp unlike for those of us who started golf 10 yrs (or more). There are a bunch of estate-less clubs offering hcp test and maintnance recognized by sga.

Check out MyGolfKaki by Ntuc, Society of Singapore Golfers in addition to those mentioned in earlier post. Good luck

Anyway in the past hcp are harder to get, I understand why some people buy it back then but now...seem a lot easier because I guess the clubs know most people just wanna play locally.

Totally agreed bro..

aling:

I be honest to admit I bought mine from JB about 9 years ago.. Costed MYR250 including one round of 18 holes.. That time, there was no GR, no MGK, etc etc.. Being ignorant and was just following friends, we arranged a game and came back happy..

But as Pocketface mentioned.. I lost out on the valuable experience and learning curve, which I strongly believe would help mould you into a better player, even as a social player.. I then took a course at Keppel Club and submitted more than 8 score cards to attain a local hcp with keppel.. I remembered my first "official" hcp with keppel was 21 ! cheers

Even then, the sense of achievement was much more than buying one.. lol!

Thus, my advice for you is, go thru the theory lessons, go learn proper golf and etiquette (how to mark ball, why not to stand behind another player when he's swinging etc) , play, take your time to experience golf, and sit for the test.. A lot of players do not practice the correct etiquette, and fact is, it reflects badly on you and could even cause you to lose a business deal in extreme cases.. A client of mine told me once before, he chose me over my competitor bank cos that banker didn't know how to play golf "properly"..

You will enjoy golf and appreciate the beauty of the game cheers

I come clean.....I too kinda bot mine. I joined a club in Ontario......then I realize this is not right.....this is not fair.....this is downright unethical...I felt ashamed when I am playing with others....I felt inferior......I felt the world is looking at me.....then I knew it was wrong.....like wat Bangla said....

so i joined SSG.....like they said the rest is history

I am now trying to be the best 30hcper

Good players or rather players that aspire tone good will understand the neccesity for the inconvenience of handicap and pc and all that jest.

It comes with maturity, which is amplified on the golf course.

People that "chiong" they're handicap have no respect from me. And honestly don't deserve a place on the golf course . This is a Gentlemens / gentleladies game.

Actually it's not abt whether they 'chiong' they hcp or not. Even some people on course with hcp also can be quite rude...definitely don't behave like gentlemen or ladies.

i was offered a handicap after i got my PC from Bishan range..just pay $$

but..... my swing was crap, my putting worse than crap.. Laughing getting a handicap by paying $$ defeats the purpose of what i started golf(8 months ago)..

personally i wanna go through the proper way of getting a handicap..

of course..some of my friends got their handicap by paying $$.. but they are much much better and have been playing for years.. Laughing

This I agreed....met this golfer who self proclaimed he got hcp when he joined us in as teh 4 ball as we only had 3 that day....he practically top the ball from the 1 shot until the last...u tell me he got hcp? Honestly, I thought he's worse than some of the beginner I played with.

Also met golfers when u borrowed fairway only when you go retrieve your ball before you can said anything, all kinda of *#!@$# also come out. If u tell me this guy is a single digit hcp player I also don't respect him. Remember this game was started for gentlemen. Also everybody was once a beginner.

bro bangla yesterday's "Gentlemens / gentleladies game" today is fast changing into a game for the masses.. more and more "commoners" and "heartlanders" esp gen Xs and gen Ys are getting into the game. Just look @ the proliferation of golf brands and their various offerings from budget forgiving GI irons to super long distance drivers (both conforming and non-conforming, the easy accessibility and affordability to public golf ranges and courses compared to the expensive limited private clubs of days gone by... today we have golf channel, golf grx, golf republic. golf direct, free golf magazines from range... to free golf fitting n customisation (tho still miscontrued keke!)... golf info is everywhere.. some ppl swear they can play without even having proper lessons or going to a teaching pro.... times r changing and altho its nice for some who prefers it to remain a gentlemens gentleladies game; becos of the diversity of joe smiths and ah bengs converging at the golf course, social behaviours will inevitably and definitely clash (GR forum is a testament to that with its diversity of view re almost every aspect of the game) .... we hv even seen many honorable respectable touring pros exhibiting rather ungentlemenly behaviour with their antics, coarse language and tantrums vented in anger.... so who is to be blamed for allowing hcps to be bought so easily? or for that matter why some clubs dont even bother checking on the need to show proof of handicap.. bro not only in JB, u dont even need hcps at most australian and american courses....

While etiquette classes are a part of getting a handicap, its not a guaranteed means of application on the course. If one is an a@£hole... He will still be an a&@hole... Note that im taking an example of a guy who can actually play.. Lacking mannerism on the course

I rather put it simply its lack of social graces in singapore rather than the handicap itself. Etiquette is basically common sense.

You guys are all worried about the small stuff. The big picture is that if someone bothers to
Go for a proper handicap it means he is golf Insured. I think sandbagging and lousy behaviour obviously going for a handicap test can't change your personality it does mean however that the person is responsible enough to go get golf insurance and a basic handicap before embarking on a game tht could potentially hurt someone else on the course.

It's like getting into an accident with someone with no driving license

In short I would rather play on a golf course that is strict with its handicap requirement . Vs one that let's in players like the wild wild west.. Hearing screams for BALL if your lucky and getting hit by one if your not.

Obviously there's an exception to every rule(Nsrcc)
