He is CEO not GOD, have to give him some time lah. The MRT system is old and can just be switched off for a couple of days for maintenance. As long as he ensures that maintenance works are in progress and if (touch wood) the trains break down again, he handles in better than the other lady, i will be happy Smile

Perhaps you did not read my comments accurately. First of all, what is the key objective of this exercise? Public relations for the new CEO to soften the impact of the negative events that has happened recently, ya? To show that he is the new man for the job and he cares about the passengers' feedback, unlike his predecessor ,ya?

Like what the interim CEO said himself, the new CEO "will need to do more to restore public confidence and trust in the public transport operator".

So, I disagree with you on the fact that the people who advised and planned this gave enough thought thoroughly.

How many a times have people on the ground criticise that when ministers take the MRT during off peak hours, they do not get the accurate feel? that they were mainly circus acts?

why follow through the same motion when public opinion have said otherwise? does it help? Or is it because public opinion does not matter? If it is the latter, I would think the public service system would need a MAJOR OVERHAUL then just changing the top man.

To me, this was going through motion and wasting of time & resources.

With that, I maintain my stand on the people who thought & planned this:"brainless".

Cheers

P.S. I am not unhappy with the SMRT breakdowns, overcrowding, etc. They do not impact me. I have not taken the MRT/bus since I was 18. I drive.

If he comes on during the peak hours with all the media people, causing the train to be even more crowded, I am sure there will still be complains. So no matter what he does, there will always be people who are unhappy. It is pretty easy to criticise when we are not the ones who advice/make the decisions. I personally feel it is fine to share our opinions getting personal and calling people brainless is a little too much.

That is so totally kelong. He took the TOP JOB at the largest monopolistic service provider in Singapore with our Government throwing $$ behind the business.

He must deliver. No other option.

I would really hope that he would continue taking the trains occasionally to get a good feel of things on the ground but maybe without the media circus so that people would stop calling it "wayang".

I am not saying that the advisers have done a great job of planning his tour, all i am saying is that it is a extremely delicate situation and no matter the time he did the tour, people would complain so maybe we can cut them some slack. And also getting personal can be pretty damaging to them. Heard about suicides around the world just because of online "flamings"?

So spare a thought for others Sir Smile

I am not saying that he does not have to deliver, I am saying that he will need some time, so we should give he some time, he is not GOD, can't do it overnight Smile

In a top MNC company if the CEO does not delivered, he'll have to go. Will he go if he does not delivered? I would not called it wayang if he's going to take the train, let's say in the morning from maybe AMK to City Hall not the other way round. Ok maybe wayang not so nice. Let's say propaganda...

Now that the public's attention is on the public transport network, I am sure he will be forced to go if he does not deliver. But here comes another difficult question, how would you judge if he has delivered or not? What happens if the trains run fine for another 5 years than suddenly there is a break down, would you allow time for him to deal with it or would you ask for his head immediately?

Primary Objective:

(1) restore public confidence and trust in the public transport operator

(2) more profit & higher ROE for shareholders

Secondary Objectives (debatable as does not add to shareholder value - it is monopoly!!!!):

(1) Solve the MRT overcrowding situation during peak hours

(2) Zero Breakdown of Trains

Performance Benchmark: Hong Kong MTR (FYI, Hong Kong MTR system is older, more complex lines, yet I dare say, lower number of breakdowns per passenger volume, higher frequency of train trips, and the train runs faster!)

Timeline:

Ok lah, cut some slag since he's human.... but hor, he very high caliber & so much $$ behind his business.... Hmmm.... within 12 months!

FAIR?

Ai seh, you should seriously write an email to SMRT stating all these objectives, RESPECT for you boss Smile

There is only one issue, if he is to maximise profit, he can easily do through a couple of ways, some of which will be extremely unpopular:

1. Request for a raise in ticket price (If I am not wrong, there is a govt board in-charge of this but he can always request and might get approved )

2. Increase the efficiency of his employees, retrenching many of less efficient local workers and employing cheaper more efficient foreign workers. From what i see, SMRT does society a service and actually employs quite a few "older" workers that would struggle to find work and true "profit driven" companies)

3. In an ideal world, there will be growth on the MRT, where a higher requirement for manpower will be satisfied by the increasing efficiency of the current employees and also better processes. No need for increase in fares as there will be increase economics of scale.

Option 3 would be an ideal but unrealistic solution and most probably it will be a mix of the 3 options. Would you be happy than?

To be honest, zero breakdown is not possible. I believe places like HK, Tokyo, London, all undergrounds are older than us, all experience break down only. I would think SMRT did not had the capability to handle such crisis due complacency.

Of cause he may step down if he don't delivered in a year or 2, but where will he go next? Another GIC or Temasek share holding company. Sit on the board and still making lot of money.

I have heard from my British colleagues that the tube in London breaks down quite often and people just deal with it and move on. They are amazed at how much of a fuss we make up when our MRT breaks down.

Got to agree that complacency is probably the biggest issue during the last breakdown, the staff were not prepared to handle such a situation. Hopefully a better management will improve that Smile

I stayed there for 3 years, yes they do break down, pls lor we had to understand that London tube is the oldest underground service in the world, but the way they handle it is much more efficient than ours.

Yes, we are making a big fuss, but look, if you are stuck underground with no help coming would you be making a big fuss. But hor, got HK frens tell me if the event were to happened in HK, next day they'll go protest on the street.

it doesn't break down as often as you think it does.

and the contingencies when it breaks down are extremely good, with minimal disruption to transport schedules.

another thing - the tube network in London is over a 100 years old.

HI guys.. Thanks for sharing your thoughts..

What prompted me to post the subject was very similar to what some of you commented..

I don't think it's a walk in the park when the CEO took the train.. If it required man hours and coordinations, plus activation of reporters and (who knows, camera crew too???), then surely we can't regard it as anything except publicity campaign and PR efforts...

If it was done as an absolute sincere walking the ground, finding out the issues and wanting to know what commuters go through everyday in their lives, I don't think we would see it in the papers so quickly, perhaps it would have been on some Youtube or blog post, with pictures of him taking the most crowded train instead... Finding out whats the problem and talking to the frustrated commuters..

In another word, his appearance was somehow staged... And the question is, who are they trying to fool and impress...?

I am also blessed like some of you, who do not need to fight for a seat every day in the morning.. Going to work is tough enough, imagine having to push one's way through...

I had an assistant before, whom despite her pregnancy had to take the train every morning to work from Kenbangan to Raffles Place.. Not that she loved to take the train, she had no choice... Sometimes she said, she had to take the train going towards Changi in the opposite direction, and then cross over to take the train coming back down so she could get a seat.. My respect and sympathy to her...

Yes, I agree that before the Govt men started welcoming more to add on to our 5.3m population, perhaps they should also add more into building in a better infrastructure.. Just like Pre-School education, I do not agree in privatization and monetizing the public transport system.. Would the man on the street suffer if SMRT is taken off the trading bourse? No. But he would if the train system is ineffective and inefficient.

That perhaps skewed the focus of SMRT's previous CEO to profitability, which might have resulted in various numerous engineering issues.. Perhaps the Board should be questioned too, for appointing a former DFS chief who never had any experience in managing such a mammoth transportation fleet...

Enough said from me, I am glad that many bros here are passionate on this issue and sympathize with many of our friends who have to suffer from our 3rd world standard transport system in our 1st world standard country..

cheers
