PostSubject: Blade or Mallet Putter?   Tue Oct 02, 2012 6:57 pm

I start thinking of using mallet putter but I'm not sure about it. I have been using blade style putter for years. So how do you decide which putter style is for you blade style or mallet style? Or is it just a matter of taste? Any input is appreciated.

It's really individual preference . Gotta have the "feel". Test it out yourself , diff mallet have diff characteristic etc

Because I want to get better in putting. My friends said mallet putter has higher MOI and thus it goes straighter.

Do a google search mate.

Straight back and straight thru kinda putting stroke tends to work better with a mallet or high MOI putter
Where as an arch type (in - square - in) stroke tends to work better with a blade type putter

There are exceptions of course. Some putting gurus also add that the putter must be pleasing to the eye.

Actually I think it's the indian, not the arrow at fault. No matter what type of putter you used, the whole idea is to put the ball into the hole.

i started out with a mallet but switched to a blade, 1 for aesthetic preferences liking the look of it, and 2 because i felt i could hit better with the blade.. not really a SBST stroke..

I was toying with a semi-mallet for a long while. But I've just gone back to blades. Still not sure. I guess it depends on the hour of the day.

Your friends may be somewhat confused.

Higher MOI (moment of inertia) means the putterhead is less prone to twisting when hit outside of the sweet spot. This would keep the ball rolling more on the line you intended, provided you have aimed your putterface where you intended.

Use the search function above rkangrah, and you will find a treasure trove of information on this topic which has already been discussed many times, especially by DGman, somewhat an expert on putters and clubfitting.

putter is really a matter of personal preference

but generally speaking, mallets are more forgiving than blades.

i also think that whether it's mallet or blade has very little to do with your putter swing ie whether arc or straight-back-straight through. that has more to do with the position and style of the putter neck / hosel.

Oddly, I suspect that's the case.

Oh... you said 'arms.'

Birdman, I just used the search function. What I got is a bunch of non-related topic with the word "putter" and a bunch of WTS putter threads. It's like finding a needle in the haystack. Shocked

PS. my friend is not an expert on putter but he's currently using mallet. I think his opinion is based on his experience.

OK suppose I would buy one to try it out. Still the question is which one?

There tons of mallet putters on the market right now. I don't have the resources (time&money) to try every single mallet putter on the market.

Maybe there are golfers who have already played with both blade style putter and mallet putter and can share their experiences and opinion.

IMHO, do not need to rush into buying a putter until you try the model that you feel good and like in feeling and look.

Bro here had explained on different putting strokes for blade and mullet putters. Do you know what type of putting stroke you are using? Mullet tend to be more forgiven vs blade putter.

We do not know how you put. Are you putting correctly in the basic. Do you tend to follow the ball and look up or are you the type that use more hand then shoulder .. etc If it is a putting problem, am afraid the world best putter would not help.

Once again, not wanted to promote Big Fish again but they do have many different type of putter that you can try there. For me, putter is most important to be custom fit as soon compare to other club.

I once told by a club fitter was that, you will know which putter you want when you see, feel and putt with it.

I am afraid whatever putter other recommend may only work for them but not for you. It is just like asking which is the best driver to have.

Good luck with your search bro

You don't need to buy each putter to try it. Go to Golf House and try the many variants there. You'll get a good feel of what you like.

From my perspective, these are my preferred putters:

Blade
1. Zen Zap
2. Yes! Abbie Tour Forged, and the Tracy is quite nice too.
3. Scotty Cameron (there are a few here but I do like the Circa 62 #1 which I'm using now)

Mallet
1. TaylorMade Raylor Fontana & the Kia Ma Fontana
2. Odyssey, not sure which but there are a few good ones there too.

Now, that doesn't help very much does it? You and I know that (aside from what I've mentioned) there are countless variants of each within those brands. Again, it's like sifting through the proverbial haystack looking for the needle.

Spending some time at GH or any decent golf store (even Joe's since he's got tonnes of putters) is a good investment. Don't ignore the flat stick. It's the one club which makes the score. Case in point, I recently played with a young talented golfer who used a Zen blade. Notwithstanding that he was a bit wayward with drives, he was able to score well because hits putts were deadly. He racked 10+ pars, most of them because he was sinking putts from all over the place and when they missed, they were mere inches away from the hole.

HTH.

last saturday a golfer came in because his friend wanted him to check us out.

he brought in an mallet putter and i had him make a few strokes. it was off and he was mainly pushing his putt. so he asked me what he should do.

i handed him a putt which he said was uncomfortably short but nevertheless was producing better results. still his routine was not right and since it was quiet at that time, he had a quick lesson on the Zen Putting Invocation.

after about 45 minutes of practicing on the ZPI, he was making putts with just about every putter in the display area. again he asked me what he should do. i asked him to pick a grip and proceeded to adjust the lie, cut his putter 2 inches shorter and fix him a new grip. the cost was the price of the grip, nothing more.

he came back yesterday and told me his putting has improved and he is confident while standing over the ball and definitely making less putts (the irony). i hope his friend who recommended him will not be too upset when they play again.

for those who have been to the House of Zen, you will NOT be asked to buy a putter. you are invited to try different putter heads and will be recommended to take one out for a week's trial. if it makes your putting stats better, you can consider building one. if it is no different from what you have, why changed?

At the end of the day, its the golfer who makes the putt, how good is a putter is only known to the golfer and nobody else.

we believe that our first priority is helping golfers understand how to putt better, when they are better than they will seek the most accurate and therefore they will appreciate what's in a ZEN.

DGman
