PostSubject: Do you get pains on your ribs?   Mon Oct 08, 2012 3:07 pm

Last friday, I was at the driving range practising lah.

It was not a very good day and my shots where going all over the place.

Together with all the practise swings, i think i did about 200 swing using about 120 balls

Than, I start to feel pain in my ribs, on the lower front part. Just in a spot about a fist size
Went to doc and doc say is some muscle, liagament thing. Basically, he have no idea lah.
Until today, still a little painful. Never knew i could strain anything there.

Any of you experienced the similiar before?

Only when I read Master's post.

Only pain I got from golf is back pain and heart aches.

Google "golf intercostal."

Intercostals are the muscles between your ribs. I strained one or some of them hitting way too many balls with a way too poor swing and it has taken about three months to heal... without swinging a club. I'm a right hander and the pain was in the right lower ribs below the pecs.

Changi and Novena have Sports Medicine guys who can check it out. Changi is cheaper but you may have to wait a month for an appointment. Novena ex but can get to see a doc in a day or two.

If it hurts when you cough/sneeze/breath deep see a doc.

I can identify w ur pain.. think its due to the overextending of e left arm during the upswing backwards and rotation of e spine, hence probably overstretching some chest/ rib muscles r ligaments which we probably never used in a long long time... lol... prob some rest is required Sad

do u feel pain when laughing or take a deep breath? If yes, it happened to me before...i think it was due to hitting too many balls with wrong swing.
It took me more than a week to recover and start practising again.

But I ended up with these guys: http://www.ssmc.sg/

I think they are affiliated, but SSMC Novena could see me right away. Good news you are feeling better! But do take care.

The pains you get from golf are exactly like the pains that I get from women, only jumbled up.

Back Ache and Heart Pain.

Indeed, they are affiliated. I used to see Dr. Ben Tan at SSMC.

However, feel that they are extremely commercialised and keep pushing you to sign up for their physiotherapy sessions even though you might not need it.

Also, the physio sessions are not as effective as they should be, and all they do is to teach you exercises which you can do at home. Which you can get off youtube anyway.

My view is no point going to them unless you're a professional athlete. You're better off going to a real specialist rather than one that focuses on sports medicine.

Or just go to some chinese sinseh. Most of the bone/muscle related aches which I have suffered over the years have been very expertly cured by some chinese sinsehs, at 10% the cost of an ineffective western specialist.

Details of my journey are confidential, but let's just say that it involved a great deal of make-up and documentation.

These are muscles that you have not used in your life before and u exert to much into it.

Just rest for 1-2 weeks dun hit balls, you will be fine. The muscles are just swelling in between ribs and when you cough, you tighten the muscles up.

I had it few years back when I started also...

The only pain I have ever experienced was heartache because I lost huge amount monies to my betting golf kakis at one time when I was out of form.

Joke aside, I think you have swung the club wrongly. One should not feel any pain in his/her body even if he/she swings 200 or 300 balls ... I believe your swing is incorrect or maybe also you failed to warm-up and do some stretching exercise before you proceeded to practice. If it is the former, I urge u consult a qualified PRO.

Hi Ren Yao,

When I was a beginner, I too have this problem, I even hit till when I breathe also chest pain. When I lie down to sleep I couldn't sit up, couldn't breathe hard, the rib cage is very painful. This is due to too much impact to the golf mat when you swing, the vibration too intense and it injure your rib muscle. Just need to rest, do not practice anymore. It should recover within 2 weeks or less, if pain still persists, please consult a doctor.

Couple of months ago i have had this pain n it lasted for few months. Initially it was the left rib. I then changed my swing and the pain transferred to right rib. Each side took about a month to heal. I even took MC to see a doctor as i could not get up from bed the normal way.

I have realised the causes were due to:
1. too much enthusiasm as a beginner - i hit about 200 balls almost daily or alternate days.
2. my muscles were not developed for golf my whole life, these muscles were previously 'unused'.
3. I have used too much of my 'hands' to swing and not the torso area.
4. I have gripped too tightly and upon hitting down on the mat, the impact was immense.

Remedy for me as my swing continues to evolve and i am not quitting my range practices:
1. Rest for 2 weeks 1st.
2. Hit lesser balls
3. Give your body a few days rest before heading back to range
3. Use lesser strength than previously
4. Rest between a few swings
5. Stretch alot before range practice
6. Grip lighter
7. Use more of your shoulders and hips and less of hands.
8. Rest days just watch golf channel.
9. Read golf republic forum everyday.

...OK, no. 8 & 9 are not exactly related to the remedy, but they temporarily curb my enthusiasm Swing

Had the same issue when I first started and asked my coach about it. He told me to rest and not practice too much. He told me if I persist to practice when injured or hurting, I will develop bad habits that will be even tougher to change. With the ache/pain, your body will naturally try to avoid and yet your head will try to compensate resulting in something improper.

It was painful and I even had to take painkillers and muscle relaxant in order to play the 9 holes at the end of the beginner course.

Now looking back, I should have used that down time to practice on my putting or training my core muscles or other low impact therapy/exercise. Which would have been more beneficial towards the game.

Cheers, hope you recover soon.

Cheers Jump

I have this problem too when I go to the range and play too many balls at one shot, sometimes almost 300. My left ribs will be hurting so much that I cant even turn my body without feeling pain.

I guess its an issue with not doing proper warm ups and not using the right muscles. Or maybe someone can enlighten...hehe
thanks
