PostSubject: What to do if in a bad slump/funk   Tue Oct 09, 2012 8:01 pm

Early this year I was playing steady bogey game

Now nothing is right...couldnt even break 100 4 times in 6 tries with no end in sight

Driver slice or tops
Iron and chip duffs
Hybrid tops
3 putt every other hole
couldnt get out of bunker in one shot
the shank even showed up today

It started after a month and half layoff in Aug - Sep

Equipment hasnt changed. Still played/practice the same amount (ie not much)

I did stop my gym and gained 3kgs. Dont think this is the cause lor

How to get out of a funk? Its not like i never could hit the ball...just lost it.

U shouldn't play till Nov 3rd mate... On 3rd Nov, you should just go to the range, hit a few balls to warm up and stretch your muscles...

Then, on 5th Nov, when we have the game, you have to sit with me in the buggy... You will be pleasantly surprised that you are enjoying your golf again...! cheers

+1 to what Chien said ... worked for me!

Guy, despite the eagle, is still in a slump ... I thought playing a round with me would remind him of his trophy winning rounds ... Unfortunately, it did not!

still bad bro. just played 104 at kranji (supposedly my home course)

hope that thurs at laguna classic can suddenly out of the blue rediscover my form.

what i do notice is that when i was playing well (well, to my standards) i was also going to range on weekly basis at least. I think especially after a layoff, i'm just reinforcing bad habits when playing on course and not correcting at range. almost impossible to self correct during a game.

sighhhhh...........

Yup.. Guy's been playing a lot with us (including me!!) lol!

You'll see him playing 80s soon... cheers

Seriously, a lot of slump is caused by mental prohibition.. Negative thoughts and failure to accept that golf includes bad shots, even pros shank and drive into hazards..

What I did was, pick up another game, and when you do play golf, don't bet..

Have a beer (which would be provided for on 5th Nov) before or during the round, and have fun..

Remind yourself before the game that you would not think of anything negative.. Objective of that round, is to go out there and have fun..

Laugh at your bad shots, relax and play like there's no worries in the world.. Tell yourself when you play, "What A Wonderful World.."

Enjoy the game and marvel at the beauty of nature (especially at Garden)

There's nothing wrong with your swing most of the time..You've been playing for ages, and golf is like cycling, you'll get back swinging easily...

cheers

Brother pushslice,

If you stop for 1.5 months, with no practice, put on weight, etc, and found that when you resumed, and still with minimal practice, that the game is not what it used to be, I don't think in my humble opinion that can qualify as a slump. More like insufficient (almost none) practice, not to mention lack of overall exercise.

I can speak with confidence on this matter because I stopped for almost 3 months (did not hit a single ball, not even at the range, during this period), also ZERO exercise during this period, and when I played one game recently, my goodness.

Persistent hook, alternating with a push. Had one range session before the game, 150 balls, and the hook showed up and refused to leave. Entire game, hook, hook, hook, and when I aimed right, push! Right into the forest.

Took a second session at the range, another 200 balls, to finally straighten the ball flight a bit. As Tattoo would say on the Fantasy Island, D-plane, D-plane!

But, despite that, I had fun. I might even drop by the range later after this. Pants getting tight around the waistline from laziness.

Sometimes we underestimate how much it takes to maintain a level of performance in this game. I had a shock when I found out for myself.

I agree... too much golf can (believe it or not) be a bad thing.

If you're in a slump, sometimes the best thing to do is just to stop playing for a while, do something other than golf and then resume later (after your brief hiatus). This way, you've had time to refresh.

The problem for some of us (myself included) is that we like the game so much, we just keep at it and we tire ourselves out. We end up trying too hard and this backfires. Practice, also makes permanent which means that bad habits seal themselves in your swing.

So, take a step back and hop back on once you're refreshed Smile

+1....too much of anything can be a bad thing!

How do we know when a man is seriously thinking about a particular matter/issue?
Right! When he got 2 cases of beer in his hands. And in this case, do that in from of Golf Channel. Watch Louis Oosthuizen's swing, watch Luke Donald's bunker shots, but don't watch TW's putting. Very Happy
It helped me so far.

A KL or BKK trip with Panji will take his mind off golf...for him to go Dongguan a bit hard.

Panji, with the swing that you are having for the tee off, I rather be in a slump with you too...

Seriously, after the game with you, I think it is more a lack of practice. Very Happy

Guru Lumber Fai, you have the cure!

1. Stop playing and accumulate surplus of good shots.
2. Watch YouTube and Golf Channel to absorb good shot karma.
3. Make an appointment with your golf kakis for monthly medal.
4. Make pep talk to clubs and balls before your game.
5. Don't show up!

No show, no play, no bad shots!
