PostSubject: range ball distance   Sun Nov 01, 2009 7:58 pm

hi all,

i hit my 5 wood in toa payoh range about 175m but i played desaru blue tee at desaru 200m par3 using 5 wood and nike pd soft ball but slightly too long. so the question here is how to gauge distance in range and course. how much difference between "BALLs" or the signage in toapayoh is not accurate. pls advise.

Actually tpy uses yards and not metres. Their distance is very short. Range balls typically go shorter by ten percent. It could also be that you never catch the ball flush in the range but got one hot. I had hit my irons a gd 20m long on solid contact

i expect to hit it short because my of club gap(driver, 5w, 4h) but end up 200m, very fishy. i usually hit at tp range 175.

Wow. 200m 5W. What is your driver?

Range balls are generally lighter and likely damaged dimples and thus shorter distance.

i mean hit an iron 20m longer than avg and missed the green completely.

All the ranges are the same. Key is to hit consistantly. Once you can do that, just check your distance on the course using your preferred ball

I agree with Sunny. Don't use the range to measure distance. Use the range to gain consistency with your swing.

How to know your distance if not on the range? On the green, you only have one shot, maybe 2nd attemp after lousy first. It is not enough to get consistency at the green.

Any better way?

Use the range as a general indication of distance but know that range balls don't go as far as regular balls.

i just check where my balls go in the range. Key is to hit the same spot every time using the same iron in the range.

I find that the range is horrible at gauging distance. Different floor would give you different distance.

And the distance in the range and on the green is so different that finding a co-relation requires a phd in mathematics to work out a formula.

Some ppl say 10% some say go 2nd storey and use the actual distance. I find none of them works.

precisely...do not use it to measure distance...my 3-5 irons seems to go the same distance in the range but it has significant distance on the course. My 3w hits way further than my 2i on the range but on the course it is at most a 10-15m difference....get what i mean?

Thus i focus only on hitting the ball correctly. Distance wise go to the course and collect stats. I collect stats and determine my distance from there

if u need to be so precise, do what the pros do... or what the rich do...

bring your own golf balls to the range... of course, i doubt the range handlers will return them to you...

i heard of one case where that guy basically bought new balls from the pro shop and unload them straight into the range...

Hi, a couple of suggestions.

1) Go see Big Fish and get measured for all ur clubs with the trackman if you want to know Ur exact distance. Of course that will incur some investment on ur part.

2) Play a quiet course on a weekday with a borrowed rangefinder. Hit a few balls with the same club to see the average distance, then use the rangefinder to measure the average distance you hit. Use the same type of ball and make sure ur on level ground and not holding up anyone behind. That's the economical way of doing it that takes all the guesswork out.

Hope you find the info useful.

Not sure if this is the right way but here's a tot:

hit your x iron fm range....distance is y.

1st hole on course...when got chance to hit the same iron, benchmark the distance...and apply same variance to all other irons/hybrid....

Now...if for me, I am a play like some call seasoned beginner.....as there are occasions I don hit if flush....so I basically play with 'feel' and followup with a prayer

go to nsrcc par 3. You can test all the various irons on the course

sometimes we do make mistake on the distance on green too... dun forget the placement of pin and also the incline...not forgetting the wind

a 200m hole can be actually a 180 hole.. and a 140m hole can actually be 165m...

but range is more of juz to get the swing feel... i think.... seldom go liao, too lazy...

There are so many variables becos of the difference.

- Wind
- Type of balls
- Surface. You hit off mats on the range.
- Elevation
- Accuracy of distance markers

TPY uses limited distance balls. good qual, durable but wun fly far.

I find that among the public ranges in Sg, MBGCC 2nd floor is the best gauge for dist. Their balls are pretty good too. The distance I get there is pretty similar to wat I do on the course too. I have used my range finder on those boards and pins and they are quite close.

OCC is another place where the distance markers are accurate.

How to gauge ur distance comes with experience and time. Ur ballstriking will also improve as you play more so try and give or take some yds off esp for the longer clubs.

Don't forget that the ydage on the course can be wrong. Thats why I always double check with my rangefinder too.
