Jerome Ng became the second straight Singaporean to win the MVP Sports Foundation-Philippine Amateur Open golf championship yesterday at Wack Wack, beating a stellar field and having to call a penalty on himself at a crucial juncture of the tournament.
Ng closed out with a 3-over-par 75 to win by two strokes with two more foreigners placing second and third.
The Philippines’ Rupert Zaragosa was fourth, losing in a count back to Muhamad Razif of Malaysia and Jong Sang-il, the Korean expat, who submitted 72 and 73 to finish second and third, respectively. Zaragosa had a 75 and all three finished at 302.
Ng was leading Zaragosa by two shots when his approach on the par 5 13th landed in the sand trap. But as he made a practice swing, he said “I felt like I hit some sand.”
Under the rules, that was a two-stroke penalty. Following Ng’s double bogey, Zaragosa took a share of the lead going to the last five holes.
But like a true champion, Ng birdied the next hole and coasted home with pars as Zaragosa bogeyed the 16th to end his quest in the event backed by Pancake House, Titleist, Pacsports, Golf Depot and Autohub.
Ng had a 4-day total of 300 and followed in the footsteps of compatriot Gregory Foo, who won last year.
“After I penalized myself on 13, I felt better with myself. It would really be unfair to the other competitors if I didn’t do it. It wouldn’t feel good if I don’t penalize myself and I won,” said Ng.
