PostSubject: Where's the kick in my NSPRO 950GH Stiff   Mon Feb 04, 2013 5:57 pm

Hi guys,

I would like to hear more regarding the NSPRO 950GH Stiff shafts and probably get some friendly advise till i find time to visit a club fitter this end of feb.

So please feel free to comment if you think i should change my shaft, or if you think the flex doesn't suit me.

Personally I've just changed to the above steel shaft with an mb iron head last week from a graphite Burner with TM stock shaft, stiff flex.
With my previous 7 iron, i hit it 150m, and i drive the ball 230m on average with a proforce V2 Reg shaft.
With my 56 deg TM rac with DG dunno what shaft, i hit it average 90m.
Swing speed wise i'm quite unsure.

With my new shafts, i have yet to know my exact distance but i still have not feel the "kick" of the steel shafts (Still getting use to it). Unsure if i'm just not used to it or if it's too stiff for me.

What do you suggest?

it's hard for us to comment without seeing ur swing. and even if we do see ur swing, it's always better to see a good club fitter than rely on what your peers say

that said, i think u should give it some time. changing from Burner graphite to S3 pro steel is a very big change indeed. You need to get used to not only ur shafts, but also the club heads. u will probably see some drop in distance over the next few weeks, but it should eventually pick up once you get used to ur new clubs

going by ur description of how far you hit the ball, i personally think nspro stiff shouldn't be too stiff for u

A 7i that goes to 150 and driver carry to 230m suggest a swing speed of high 90s mph (97-100)

Many shaft manuf. would fit you to S flex, almost to the high end of Stiff flex range. Depending in your tempo. Nspro 950 S is surely within your capability. Not too stiff for u.

But if its Feel youre trying to capture, its very subjective. Is it the lag feel? Is it an active tip youre looking for? Visit a clubfitter like bfg or wizgolf etc, to test different shafts nd find the one that you like best.

Also, pls check your burner 7i loft vs your mb 7i loft. It might be one club difference.

A stiffer shaft is unlikely to help you hit further, but it should help with your dispersion. From the distances you mention, the shaft should be within what is ok for you flex wise.

As for the kick feeling, it is definitely going to be very different with a steel shaft compared to a off the rack graphite shaft

Hey guys, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I've given it a check, the burner's pw is 45deg whereas the cobra s3 pro's pw is 46deg.

So i guess my burner is just a little stronger?

hahha. i guess i really need getting use to steel shaft. i really felt the lag graphite have given me and i love it. But i felt that for my golf to progress, i should tighten the dispersion and increase my workability so i took this "risk" especially for a moment i was thinking distance shouldnt be a factor now.

It was about time i change clubs anyway. Wish me luck.

Cheers!

its not the flex. Unlike popular belief.

Its the weight of the steel shafts, which is why you cant swing as fast compared to your graphite shafts.

continue swinging your steel shaft irons the way you swing your old graphite set, you ll end up like a couple of guys here with elbow and hand problems

The NSPro950GH is a low-kick shaft. (ie high launch).

I suffered the same loss of distance when I changed from graphite to NsPro. 7i from 140m to 90m.

After loads of frustrations, I found three things that need to be addressed:

1. Swing Lag
Strangely, with a graphite shaft, it was my hands accelerating the club. With steel shafts, it was the club's weight "pushing" my hands during the downswing. My whole swing timing changed. Adding SW helped a little but slowed my swing speed. (tested on swing radar)

The overall higher total weight also made me unconsciously grip the club tighter. That killed the lag I had with graphite and I started "flipping" the club at impact. (bent left wrist)

Get a partner to watch your swing lag and wrist position at impact. Video is best.

2. Shaft's high launch
DGman has always mentioned that NSPro is unsuitable for aggressive golfers who hit down hard on the ball. I fully agree. The ball ends up popping very high and a lot of distance is lost.

High launch is good for approach shots only if we can bring spin down.

At the range, compare the ball's initial launch height (ie first 50m)

3. Spin
Depending on your swing release, tip soft shafts generally add spin. Too much and the ball balloons and loses distance.

At the range, watch the last 50m of your ball trajectory for steel shaft and graphite. Does the ball roll forward after it lands, stay still or roll backwards with both 7 irons?

the stiffer the flex, somehow the shaft becomes heavier.

Yes in most cases. however Im sure you could get a lighter shaft in a stiffer flex. eg miyazaki c kua shafts in 43x 70 x etc. IF you can handle it.

Using NSPRO 950 R shafts on my current clubs and I agree that the shafts tend to send the ball pretty high up on a good firm impact.

Losing some distance compared to my old clubs with graphite shafts (S) but gained alot more control and adjustability.

I try and get less loft and abit more distance by closing the head abit on impact.

Never tried the NSPRO 950 Stiff but curious to know in future

Thanks guys for all the useful inputs. I'll just do a little update here since it have been 3 weeks since i've started this post. Very Happy

I would say i'm now quite use to the Cobra s3 pro irons with Nspro 950gh stiff.
Ball striking is good (when my body isn't fatigue). My shots now have a mid trajectory.
Distance wise i'm still 1 club shorter than my old graphites though, now my 7 iron goes on avg 140m.
But i really appreciate that shot dispersion is being much tighter.

Meanwhile i've added a 24* hybrid to gap the distance for 170-180m cheers

You can consider a simple physics formula:

Force=mass x accerelation

You want your ball longer, if you work hard on the swing you can increase the acceleration, or use a lighter shaft to get more acceleration.

However, a slightly heavier club can help to increase your clubhead speed as well.
