PostSubject: Are you cool?   Sat Nov 07, 2009 10:08 am

Keeping the topic online and seperate...

@DGman. I cannot help it if i am a hot-blooded, hormonally-active growing young man lah...

but i promise to try my best and tape the club to my hand the next time so that i cannot throw...

how many else of you are guilty of throwing tempers on the cost and to what extreme...

with great regret, i list down my faults here and group them according to my own perceived socially acceptance standards.

acceptable temper throwing antics
1. Cursing yourself. (I am not giving myself credit here, but i do hope that MT did not get this habit from me. i actually found it amusing to see him cursing himself although i always do it to myself all the time when i make a bad shot.)

not so acceptable temper throwing antics.
2. Screaming. (I tend to shout or scream when I make a bad shot. this is not cool as u may affect others at other holes. imagine going for a $100 birdie putt when someone at another hole who just made a bad tee shot scream.)
3. letting go of clubs (sometimes upon impact, one will know immediately if the shot is bad. and when that happens to me, i just let go of my club. I did that yesterday and know my driver have little chips and scraps everywhere and my heart now damn pain.)

definitely no-no temper throwing antics.
4. Throwing of clubs. (nuff said)
5. Wacking the club to the ground. (you made the mistake, not the grass or golf course. no need to wreck the golf course.)

So for myself, on good days, i just do (1). for yesterday... i was up another level.. actually i should say down another level... and was guilty of action (3). on my worst behavior days, i do all five and i go mete my own punishment out to myself later on... so far the only people who have witness me do all five is Gman, MT and technospaz... i hope no more than that in the future.

I do let out a groan once in a while or a cuss word to myself but I am never very vocal nor expressive in my anger or disappointment.

I know Mowen likes to let go and drop his clubs when he hits a bad shot. I wun do that esp my driver cos it will have alot of scratches.

End of the day, its only a game.

MC, you're still young and we understand . don't put too much pressure on yourself and just enjoy the game... As for me i changed my mindset on the game.. i just enjoy the game and company of friends ... even if i mess up shots ... i just laugh and get over it... no point spoiling your flight mates game by throwing tantrums ... the course is not our office and bread and butter unlike the Pros .. and we also don't work so hard on the game so there's much more room for errors and mistakes ...

I overheard two old men talking at the changing room at Island ... one was asking the other hows the game ... he replied " At our age ... we can wake up and play golf is a blessing already ... "

Golf is a game we can play till we are old with friends so take your time and enjoy while we can and we are allowed to ... Cheers and i apologise for my ramblings ...

MC....yeah even the Rage confided (to MT and I) that he was perturbed by your action.

Best golfing mates....S70B (Win or lose he is cool), Slinger (Generous strokes), MT (so far so good), RogY (very lucky with short chip), CCC (if he can course manage), Shotah (only when he plays with me), the Rage (if he leaves his driver at home), SamT (when he gedek), LostSoul (when he turn up for the game or get to the right golf course).

lots more...when i have time to reflect

I played pretty ordinarily today. Hit my fair share of bad and horrendous shots. The 20-25mph gusts didn't help either.

However, it was a happy day for me. Got to play with TSL and our neighbours. All of us had fun but we almost din make the full 18 because of daylight.

When you play golf, this slogan doesn't hold true:

How u act on the course is a true reflection of your character.

hmm yeah there's a fine line to draw between being competitive and going overboard and being too serious abt the game you forget to have fun. your friends will be able to tell and the tension won't be very enjoyable for them either.

it's hard but i think the best is to be competitive inside but on the outside smile and laugh and curse at your friends and have a good time! that'll be ideal lah but quite hard to do! haha

i think MC can be a better player if he keeps control of his temperament... i told this to him before and also i am saying it here to provide some encouragement for him...

i also used to have a very bad temper, but after playing golf for awhile and observing better players play, i think i have toned down my temper quite alot, even amongst social/non-golf related situations...

at the end of the day, even though i am not a good player, this is what i learnt so far from my short time with the game, and i think the main takeaway is that golf is not a game of perfection, but rather a game of options and choices and execution...

meaning, we can never strive to hit 72 perfect shots and finish the round.. rather, i think it is a game where u hit a shot, if it's perfect, good for u, if it ends up somewhere u don't want it, u have got to make a decision and choice as to how to play it, and it becomes a game of how good your decision making and execution of that choice is..

with that thought in mind, i think u will tend to lose your temper alot less..

for me, sometimes i curse at myself because it is my own fault for not executing that shot well, and i am a person who needs that vocal encouragement to reinforce into myself what i should be doing...

sometimes i also let go of the club, but it is because i feel that if i mishit a shot, the feeling of the whole club feels really horrible, like the shaft keeps vibrating, or the entire clubhead is being twisted, and letting go of the club spares my hands from the agony of holding on to it.. i'm sure u guys know what i am talking about...

anyway, good post from MC, and also good that he is on the way to improvement... i guess he got a little afraid and decided he needed to step up his game after he narrowly won me by a hole.....

I haven't had the chance to play with all the pros who have written in this thread, but if my two cents' worth are worthed anything, would just like to say that no one should be too hard on themselves... i believe that end of the day, your company would still be enjoyed by someone... someone just told me that "golf is a game which you should play with company you are comfortable with..." that sounds true bec if you have not-so-good vibes about the company you are with, i suppose it will affect your game too... some types of behaviour works for some pple, while others may not be able to tolerate... after all, just read that GOLF stands for "Golf Offers Lasting Friendship"... if your kakis always ask you for games, that must a reason that they want your company... Very Happy

Would also like to say thanks to my two new-found golf mates whom I played with at Marina yesterday... it was my first time at Marina. The par 5s were quite a long distance and the bunkers were high... to be honest, I was already tired by the 6th hole... but I told myself to push on... after all, pple took time off to play with me right? Yup, they were patient and encouraging... in the end, it was an enjoyable game played and I had that little bit of satisfaction at testing my endurance level... thanks thanks thanks... Cheers Jump

Usually when I hit a bad shot, I would laugh at myself and the worst exclamation I made is
" CHAO KEROPOK !" (bad keropok) kekekekekek....and that to myself and not to anyone in particular and in a good nature kind of way because the rest of the flight mates usually will laugh which keeps everyone entertained rather than become quiet and serious. Laughing

I played with a student not long ago, and he carried on like a pork chop throwing, spitting, swearing etc.

I actually got P****D at him. Told him I have been playing the game for 30 years, (yes I am old). I still practice 1-2 hours per day, and I still shot 95 in a PGA event.

I have the right to get angry.... But I dont, birdie or bogey I am the same, there is no point in anger. Only makes you play worse. (Worse than 95 boo hoo I hope not ....)

Anyone that plays once every 2 weeks and practices less than once a week, and does not practice positivly has no right to get angry on the course.... Sad

For MC.

All of us need to refine the art of throwing clubs, here's some guidance.

Golf is a crazy game. The more cool you are, the better you play. However, the moment you play a bad shot and lose your cool, it's a downward (not to mention frustrating) spiral from there.

I curse when I play a bad shot. I'm not polite Sad I should try to be more polite and less aggressive. I'll try... promise!

The "F" in golf is the frustration everyone goes through after hitting a bad shot no matter what their level of playing skill, but it's how we decide to handle the frustration in the end that matters to the company we're with.

Play with the kind who curse and swear, and our behavior will be likewise, lulling us into thinking it's the norm for golf. Imagine if you end up in a corporate game with total strangers and you suddenly erupt, what will ur flightmates think?

Play some corporate golf, and you will very soon understand how to control urself or risk embaressment later. Representing the good name of your company will rein you in fast.

Like shorthitter said, what right do we have to be angry at our level? The pros play for a living with every stroke meaning not only a difference in dollars, but in deciding who is champion or an also-ran. And they get fined on tour for uttering an obscenity. Doesn't that tell us something about this gentleman's game?

We all feel the frustration, it's just a matter of channeling the anger and frustration into something positive for the next shot. I've muttered my fair share, and I still say the odd one or two if the company is right, but not with bad energy spitting out of me like fireworks. Mostly, I just run through the shot again in my head and analyse it in preparation for the next one. And sometimes, I have a eureka moment, and that brings a smile back to my face, and I can't wait to hit the next shot and get it right. Being pensive and quiet is way better than exploding. You know the old saying "If you have nothing good to say...."

In the end, we are supposed to enjoy golf.

MC, u reminded of myself when i first started to play competitively, but time had helped me curb my own little devil......

we have different prorities now, work n family come first lah, golf should be a afterthought lah......

but i like your spirit, its not easy to acknowledge your mistake, even harder to correct it, i hope u succeed

may not be all true, but how u play golf is a reflection of your character......

Ur definitely on the right path MC, Ur way past the first step of acknowledgement. Even got it broken down to 5 stages of degeneration.

Once you crest the hill, it's all easy coasting. Just don't say "Omm..." when you play, and I'm not sure if saffron orange is quite Ur colour.
