Has to be the most underused golf course sitting on prime land. Wonder if there are plans to make better use of the land?

came accrossed this web. quite interesting if you may say.. the garderner did it all including where the golf holes are and making sure the golf green is trimmed down to 4.5mm each time. Smile

http://www.challenge.gov.sg/2010/07/inside-the-istana/

Mr Hamid trims the golf green, operating the reel mower, a specialised grass cutter, with finesse – making a tough job look simple.

The perfectionist makes sure the golf green is trimmed down to 4.5mm each time.

Mr Hamid loosens the sand that gets compacted over time, to improve playing conditions for golfers like Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

Did you know that Mr Hamid actually decides where the golf holes are? Whenever the golf holes show signs of wear and tear, he cuts a new one in the Istana golf course – this adds variety for the golfers. He uses a simple tool that extracts a vertical column of grass and soil in a precise manner.

To make sure the golf green is even, Mr Hamid rolls a few golf balls across, looking out for bounce that indicates bumps.

$10, but you'll need to pay the Greens "keeper" $1.5m Smile

I think anybody who has played there is bound by the Official Secrets Act. I heard that only the senior cabinet members and president can play and invite guests. It is the most exclusive 9-hole golf course in Singapore then.

Alas, I don't know any of them or have done enough good national deeds to be invited.

9 holes. Apparently, it's nothing fancy but I'm sure most of us wouldn't mind having a private golf course just outside the office Smile

I think the White House has a putting green or something similar.

I am sure you can putt it onto the green instead of using a wedge to play a bunker shot!

Istana golf course used to host VVIP guests where security might be an issue. For example, ESM hosted Bill Clinton and secured the USSFTA after playing late night golf past midnight. Clinton's security detail wouldn't have allowed him to play on other courses.
How do we benefit from such sojourns? For eg, S'pore is one of a few countries with visa-free travel to US. Public records tell all. Just search golf, Clinton, Singapore and US-S'pore Free Trade Agreement.

If you go to OCC near the terrace, in one of the photo exhibit there, I recall seeing Mr. Goh and Bill posing for a picture before or after having a game there.... I would have guessed that security would have been very tight there.

The Istana Golf Course has night lighting?

If you can play at the Istana, I'm sure someone will turn on floodlights for you or yank the Batman one to shine on your ball.

You are right; That game at OCC was in 2005 after Clinton became ex-president. But my mistake too - the USSFTA agreement was struck during a midnight golf game between the two , when Clinton was president, in Brunei in 2000. Read paper by CS Lim
