the rules committee overrode the rule of DQ

and administer a 2 strokes penalty...

he will be playing at -1. doubt he can get to put on the green jacket unless he really rallies himself to more record birdies..

Yes, anything can happen to the ball with dimples ... The other competitors might succumb to pressure and falter eventually ... Don't forget, Tiger is mentally the toughest athlete you have ever come across ... Nike Golf

If Tiger gets to wear the green jacket eventually, what will the media say? I am keen to find out.. cos out there, many Tiger haters are already seeking his blood by claiming he should DQ himself for signing off the wrong score..

Certainly not. Had been his fan since I started golf. This masters certainly raised many eyebrows with Guan Tianlang and now in TW's case. More to come..

I am confused about the ruling.

For water hazards, we are allowed to drop along the line the ball last cross the water hazard and the flag stick with no limit to how far behind.

Then why was Tiger penalized for dropping it 2 yards behind his previous ball position.

Any pro or anyone can explain this rules violation?

if im not wrong there is a difference between a lateral water hazard and a normal water hazard. Normal ones are denoted by yellow stakes and red ones are lateral water hazards.

not exactly 100% sure on the rules regarding each one... hope some pros can enlighten also

Eh, is it because the ruling says a golfer can drop as far back as he want and up to where he last played. The misunderstanding lies in TW had dropped the ball 2 yards further than where he last played. And that constitute a breach of the ruling because he had improved the lie from the original position.

In any case, the rules official/s rules that this breach DO NOT/WILL NOT result in DQ and they have the final say, whatever unhappiness it may cause to some people. And in this case, it happens that Nick Faldo is one of them.

Think is either drop near as possible to where the ball was played.

Or taking where the ball crossed the water hazard, draw a line towards the flag and backwards.. And he can bring the ball back along the line as far as possible.(in this case shld be almost in the forest Liao)

Tiger did neither, as he admitted he played 2 yards further than where he was.

Correct me if I am wrong

There are two rules regarding water hazards.

General water hazards (Yellow Stake) and lateral water hazards (Red Stake).

You have options with each of these.

Yellow Stake:

1. Play the ball as it lies within the hazard
2. Drop a ball and play from "as close as possible" to the original shot/spot
3. Drop a ball keeping the point where the ball crossed the hazard and lining it with the pin. You can go as far back as you would like on that line.

Red Stake:

1. Play the ball as it lies
2. Drop a ball and play from "as close as possible" to the original shot/spot
3. Drop a ball within two club lengths of where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (ii) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

Since Rae's Creek is a yellow he only had the options of: playing it as it lies, keeping the line where the ball crossed the hazard last and the pin and going as far back on that line as he wants, use the local rule drop zone, or play it from the original position. It appears that Tiger chose the option of dropping a ball "as close" as possible to the original spot. My guess is two things happened: 1. He opened his mouth in the interview and told them about the yardage number (87 vs. 89) which does not appear to be "as close" as possible. If he had not said anything in the post round interview I doubt we would even be speaking about this as the tape appears to be inconclusive as to how far away he was from the original spot.

As far as the ruling itself. This was one of the reasons that rule was implemented, at least as from what I have been reading about it today. My only question is why don't these major tournaments have rules officials with each of these groups. Seems like it would make sense, especially in a shorter field event like the masters.

@DRGjr72 - 1 question. Red stake play as it lies - no penalty stroke? TQ.

@bee. No penalty for playing it as it lies in the hazard. Just don't ground your club in there!!!
