PostSubject: How will you approach when you left with 180m to the green   Sat May 25, 2013 10:46 pm

Hi bros/sistas in GR.

I am still learning how to cut my stroke to play below 100 consistently.
Just wish to hear from ppl who can consistently play ard 80s to 90s.
When you approach the green with 180m to the green, will you chiong using a fairway wood or hybrid which you are not 100% good at hitting the green.
Or will you lay up to your "to go to" shots maybe play two PW to reach the green?
Any other suggestion will be appreciated.

Many thanks!

Cheers

Ask yourself wat is ur comfortable distance to approach the green that u can confidently say u can reach 8/10 shots. . Mine is 90-125 m.

So work backwards from green to your ball and go from there. Only u know wat ur distances are

i think it would depend on how your short game is and the hole in question... for the most part, i would play my club for 180m which for me is my 5i, perhaps for you, it might be a 4h but i would certainly play the shot for the distance unless there is a hazard around the green.

should there be a hazard near or around the green, i would play to my most comfortable full shot which is 115m

My kakis advised me to learn how to lay up before learn how to chiong...

As lay up itself also not tat simple...

Gotta consider scoring distance...

Best angle of approach...

Pin position etc...

And i am still learning how to lay up.. Crying or Very sad

Hope i too can play constantly below 100... Embarassed

Agree that if there's no hazard in front of you that you should go for the green whether that be a long iron, hybrid of even 3 wood. The key for breaking 100 is your not only course management but particularly your short game - approach wedges, pitching, chipping and putting. I stress that it's about practicing your scoring clubs and getting "up and down" around the greens at least 6/10 times.

Thank you all bro for sharing.
Yah my go to distance is 110 to 80m.
I am not a strong hitter so most time my hybrid 3 will be about 160-170m.
as my hybrid isnt my strongest, only maybe landed in green 3/10 tries.
sometimes i screw up when it landed like maybe 30m to 40m.
No man's land distance.

Hope i can have those distance man, but im not such a strong swinger.

Thank you Begbie, yah my comfortable distance are quite the same as yours.
Do you always lay up at such distance? if say 150m which is slightly off your confident 90-125m do you still lay up or chiong?

2008 sure Chiong one

Lay up la. Percentage shot to land on e green is not high from 180m

Worse case scenario lose 1 shot.

Better than lose 2-3 shots and affect subsequent holes also

I am also not sure where i mess up.
I have a few games which i played with 4 pars and maybe 2 to 3 boggie.
but still ended up over 100.
sometimes i mess up big time like a few 4 over or 5 over.
than it becomes a really up hill task to break 100.
Sad, just trying to analyse where my games goes wrong.

If your target is to play below 90s, at 180m, I would suggest laying up because of a couple of reasons.

If I'm playing from a suitable tee (be it white, blue or black), I'd normaly be using a mid to short iron for my approach to the green.

If I had to use a long iron for the second shot, it's probably due to a
1. bad tee-off,
2. long, low-index par 4
3. short par 5, where I could try for GIR in 2

I'd be pretty happy with going for 3-on for these kind of situations, which are normally not too many in a round, rather than risking blowing the hole totally by being too aggressive.

Bro, which course and hole is it?

Not that I'm an expert, but 180m is a funny distance to lay up.

I mean, if your killing zone is 100m in, that means you do a 80m wedge from the tee? (actually that's a great way to throw your buddies off. Good for a laugh also)

Maybe for a 180m, use what ever you're comfy with, say a 7i for 130m. Nice easy shot you've practiced over and over at the range. Remaining 50m a 7i chip and pray?

Less chance of error than gan cheong tee off with a driver correct?

Sorry la, I know the theory behind laying up. Makes sense, but I'd always take the longer stick out. When it tops, I tell my buddies it was a evilly crafted killer lay up.

150 m i will go for it.. Why lay up ? Miss short of green just try to get up and down for par.

I hv a 4H that goes abt 180 which i am comfortable with. I will go for it. Only if its 190 and higher i may consider laying up, consudering hazards or water etc

Chiong doesn't mean must on la..

Lay up to your go to distance also no 100% on.. sometime can duff and top also

Most ppl have the club to go 180m

Unless you talking about more than 220m

Miss the green then practice your chipping loh

The trick is know where to miss

Chipping got chance to chip in

Quite hard to hole out from 100m if lay up

+1..wah my strategy same as tendy champ Very Happy just different execution hahah

I'd just add: play the percentages. Esp for high handicappers.

E.g. if the TS is only 50% sucessful in hitting a 175-180m and 30% successful in scrambling or sand saves. Maybe consider a 80% chance of success with 2 x 90m shots with a GW or PW?

Bogey is good for 100+ scorers.

Yo bro! how are you man!
Guess you need to take out more clubs la, after the 4 & 5 club game.
Yah 180 maybe when you hit a long par 4 or short par 5 game.
i did tried once, in those monthly medal game, where all have to play blue tee (dont ask me why all have to play blue, i was told to do so)
So there are some par 3 that is that long, and i do lay up and one of the player was like "hey you lay up huh?" i said " yah lor, too far mah"
ahahaha..

If there is no water hazard guarding the front and back of the green, without hesitation, I will attack without laying up ...

for me it will be very simple:

Chiong for the green using 5 iron thinking sure can make it. End up top the ball or chunk it 80m.

Get to the ball thinking ok heng at least now got a good distance 100m, gap wedge is perfect for this, must put it close to the hole!

Chunk the wedge.

Left 30m pitch, end up stress liao, playing 4 still off the green, need to get up and down for bogey.

Blade the pitch over the green. Curse and swear at how stupid I am.

Chip back short and 3 putt for a smooth 8.

Long story short, better to layup from the get-go. haha.
