3 factors for me:

1) Green big enough to go for? Some greens very small. From 180m, chance of holding the green low.
2) Any hazards around the green. Water, OB, bunker?
3) How is my swing for the long irons that day? Groovy or out-of-sorts?

I'm normally a conservative player & if all 3 favourable, I'll go for it.

If you're trying to break 90, then I'll advise to lay-up. We golfers are eternally optimistic of pulling off the shot. But the possibility from 180m is not high. So use the distance well and develop a go-to pet distance. Scores will likely be better as well.

Another good shot to learn is the pitch from 75m inwards. Great score savers.

Play it like how you would on any other 180m Par 3 hole ~ taking into consideration hazards surrounding the green. Always play 1 club more then what you practice at the range for 180m approaches.

This sport is already complex enough, why complicate matters further with numbers and percentages.......??

Often we have some clubs we cannot play well on green on certain days.

Normally i will first determine if i am confidence or comfortable on the long iron or hybrid that goes 180m
some days, you knows the prior shots on these are good or not. Then compares with that day s confident on those chips around the green. if that days my hybrid or long iron cannot perform , lay up will be the best.

However, i find out that if try to dedicate one game to lay up and another to go for it - anaylse yr score n u will have some confidence what to do . However, if everytimes play safe there will b little excitement n little to learn..

i also agreed on what one of the bro said here. go a club longer on course..
in fact, i also think that i can play stiffer shaft on range but not on course.

That's a good one... Killer lay up...applies to long par 3 as well.. Haha

However ... only if I was in a bad lie (e.g. deep rough, down hill lie, slightly block by a tree, etc.) and there is water hazard or deep bunker guarding the green, I might think twice of attacking w/o laying up ... Laughing

Hi bros/sistas in GR.

I am still learning how to cut my stroke to play below 100 consistently.
Just wish to hear from ppl who can consistently play ard 80s to 90s.
When you approach the green with 180m to the green, will you chiong using a fairway wood or hybrid which you are not 100% good at hitting the green.
Or will you lay up to your "to go to" shots maybe play two PW to reach the green?
Any other suggestion will be appreciated.

Many thanks!

Cheers

if u are still trying to break 100.... i rather u layup

but maybe play 150-160m, take the greenside bunkers out of play...

the last 20-30m, just pitch or chip on then 2 putt for bogey....

bogey is a good start for breaking 100.... cos u are not chalking up big numbers

this way, it will force upon you to work on your short game....

a good short game is imperative to all golfers...

thats how i break 90.... a decent short game

and what better way to get a good short game than practise on the course...

theres a game called small snake big snake.... great for improving your short game

to this day, i still got ppl owning me jugs of beers.....

Means up the club. E.g. If you normally play a 7i for that distance, use the 6i instead.

My wild guess is that at 180m to green, I presume the hesitation to cheong means one should be playing at least above 95 gross score. In this case, laying up is the sensible thing to do. The question is how to lay up.

1) Are there bunkers guarding the green? Front and/or back? Left and/or right? I will avoid a carry over if possible.
2) I will find the best lie to aim at (with the least penalties) so that I don't end up with an awkward lie for next shot. If I'm laying up already, I shouldn't penalize myself further.
3) Not closer than 60m or so for my next shot as any closer would require me to perform less than full swings for my most lofted wedge which is harder to get accurately.
4) Last but not least, check my fundamentals and execute 2 good shots consecutively!

Snagy23,
I would choose to lay up to your "go-to" distance, and put the next shot on the green. Plan your play and play to your plan, sure you will break the 100 very soon.
Avoid chionging and penalty / hazards.
OT a bit, When is next Par 3 game? Wanna play Changi on 30 jun am?

With my handicap level, I will lay up. I can use an iron that goes 150m and followed by a 30 m shot.

Alternatively, I can use an iron that gives me 110m and followed by a 70m shot.

I will choose the secondly option as the chances of hitting a  110m and 70m is easier than 150m and 30m.

that distance would most probably be my 3 wood. I am alright with bunkers so unless there is water hazards or OB or my 3 wood is totally hopeless on that day, I would go for it .... Of course I am prepared to blow this hole. It about enjoyment or score, sometimes rather forget about low score and enjoy...

I will usually use my 5FW which is relatively straight abt 160m, then I will use my LW (60*) if it is short off the green to find the pin.

When I first started play golf, I always attacked. Mostly failed. Score usually above 100. Unhappy.

Then using the strategy that bogey as my par, I would layup, say 100m + 80m. The result is fruitful, normally low 90, once in a while high 80. Happy.

But later on one 180m occasion, I attacked & it was on the green. From there on, I always attacked..... & unfortunately mostly unable to on. My score went to high 90 and sometimes > 100 again. Unhappy.

So nowadays, will always layup.

I have a few games which i played with 4 pars and maybe 2 to 3 boggie.
but still ended up over 100.
sometimes i mess up big time like a few 4 over or 5 over.
than it becomes a really up hill task to break 100.
Sad, just trying to analyse where my games goes wrong.

i suggest a course on course management with slinger.

I'm horrendous at course management. I think that I can get to the green with a 3H. I often end up power-fading the ball Sad Must remind myself not to get cocky and that it's easier to play a 50m wedge shot off the fairway than to force one through trees, branches etc. even if the latter is just 20m from the green.
