PostSubject: My Quest to break 80 by 31 Dec 2013   Thu Jun 06, 2013 9:10 am

Hi Guys,

decided to set a personal challenge to break 80 by end of this year.

A little bit more about myself :

-25 years old
-handicap 8.5
-currently play around high 80s, occasionally low 90s due to drastic swing changes
-plays a round of 18 every weekend
-hit the range at least 2-3 times a week

Was plagued with back aches after coming back to golf after 7 years of break, and decided i was probably doing something wrong in my swing.
Took the plunge and changed my entire swing, throwing my game totally off.
Putting is horrible too, which will require alot of effort to improve. Cant find a place near my house to practice my short game, may end up
getting a putting mat if neccessary.

What will be posted here -
Updates on every round of golf that i play - if i can i will attach a snapshot / photo of the scorecard.
Weekly planning of what I will attempt to master during the week at the range.
videos of my swing perhaps every 1-2 mths to document swing changes.
Thoughts of what I have learnt, and hopefully I can learn some stuff from you guys here.

and lastly, let me know if you guys are interested to practice together ^_^
I usually range at the bishan range, and golf on the weekends at MBGC

All the best bro. Keep us posted of your games so that we can share in your success (and I'm sure you'll get to that magical number before 31 December 2013).

I'm also on this quest and hope to achieve it by 31 December.

I left out the year intentionally.

Bro, you're playing an 8.5 and looking to break 80. I think most of us here will be looking forward to learning from you instead Smile

Good target setting bro!

Given your handicap, think it will happen way before 31 Dec.

All the best!

Good one. Rather than telling people u use these irons to get HIO, use certain type of equipmentt and can cut how many strokes off, etc
Basically using your determination and hardwork to work towards your target is commendable.

All the best!

Read a book about this british guy breaking par in year.

quite a good read.

The critical aspect to his goal was ........

putting.

Not very exciting, but dropped his scores.

Also the shortest chapter in his book.

But looking forward to your posts!

Shaving 9 strokes off to break 80 within a year!! Not an easy feat! That means taking off each stroke for 9 holes. I wish I had your determination to hit the range first.. All the best..

U are already playing a handicap of 8.5 which is considered fantastic for a social golfer ... I believe you should focus more on your putting now to break 80 ... Good luck in your quest!

So are you implying that one has to play with mates already playing in the 70s in order to break 80?

I believe its easier when you play with good players, as you can learn from them the aspects of the game you need to improve to help cut strokes off their scores. its easy to say drive better, get more GIRs, pitch and chip closer, make more putts within 10 ft, but knowing which aspects to focus on improving first to cut strokes would be more effective than trying to do them all. For some, betting helps to be more driven and focused, for others it just ruins their game.

I probably shouldn't be commenting because I haven't broke 80 and do not have time to even maintain my current handicap.

thought Id just chip in a bit more.

Summarise that guys story a bit.

Test ground was the same course.

Changed his driver to x flex. whacked it 300 yrds.

got carried away with full swing. coach friend nagged him to focus on fundamentals, esp grip.

realised short game impt, chip until his wife got angry.

then realised putting beh choon, so putt until wife and daughter got angry.

used the same range as a teenage Rory Mcilroy.

Ok the last point is irrelevant. Otherwise the story sounds all too familiar.

it's probably something along the line that by playing with better player they can spot your mistake in both strategy of attack and technique and also give you motivation to play like them.

Now the question is whether the player is capable of incorporating the advise, perform the required improvement to their game, is another factor.

superb advice from the people here, hopefully i can get to meet those who are playing inthe 70s here to learn from them. i once played with this guy who had a notebook with him, on how to play at certain holes. he was a single handicapper too, and i realise that there has to be a certain amount of effort put in off the golf ball as well to be prepared mentally

Sorry guys, an ignorant ques here. If bro herpderp is playing off a 8.5 handicap, shouldn't he be playing closer to a low/mid 80s score instead of playing in the high 80s/low 90s score?

Asking this cos I do know of some guys who is playing off similar handicap, and they actually do break 80 every once in a long while, thou juz barely like a 78/79 kind of score.

Juz curious...

Change of swing... I used to be able to put on regulation regularly, so after the change of swing I started hitting quite a few mishits. So shots like 40-50m chips came into play and I realised how badly I fared at that distance... Problems came into my putting as well so I started playing badly. So this is my journey to playing better and better..

Hope I answered your question. No single handicapper likes to play in that region... I could have simply posted I played in the 70s and looking to break par.. But that defeats the purpose doesn't it. I guess this is golf (:
