PostSubject: Symptoms of Heart Attack   Fri Jun 14, 2013 2:41 pm

Following the recent demise of a fellow golfer at Legends (my condolence to the family), thought I'd share my personal experience with all.
I had my attack in 2005. No prior symptoms before that. Stopped smoking in 1994. Have mild diabetes (family trait) and high cholestrol but normal blood pressure. On morning of attack, had feeling of something stuck in my throat (as though I did not take sufficient water to swallow a pill). No other discomfort or chest pain. Stopped to get a cup of coffee and while waiting to make payment, suddenly broke out in cold sweat that soaked my handkerchief. Decided to call a doctor friend staying nearby and luckily she was around to take my call and after I told her my symptoms, she told me I was having a heart attack and instructed me to stay put. Whilst waiting for her arrival, I felt numbness spreading to my left hand and left cheek. I could not believe I was having a heart attack as I felt no pain at all. My friend drove me to the A & E at NUH, insisted that I ride a wheelchair eventhough I could walk and once the nurse confirm that I was having a heart attack, they rushed me to the operating room and insert a stent to clear a 100% blockage in one of my blood vessel. Stayed in ICU for 4 days I think. Later, was told 14% of my heart muscle died due to blood deprivation. Have recovered and currently am on medication and having check up every 6 months.
Doctor told me many people, including some people who are in the medical field, fail to recognise heart attack symptoms. Many attribute the discomfort that they feel to over-exercising & fatique or just cannot believe it could happen to them. I was very lucky that I got to the hospital within a short time. If this had happened whilst I was out in a golf course, the consequence would have been dire. So friends, do read up on heart attack & stroke symptoms. It could save you or your friend. I hope others too would share their experience for the benefit of members of this forum. Cheers!

You should check out roll oak.

I am still waiting for NUH Heart Center to provide me with an appointment with the heart specialist. I am not sure what tests they will perform, e.g. CT Scan, MRI, Angiogram, etc... Based on the report I got, it states the following: -

Pretest ECG showed inferolateral T Wave inversion.
Mild ST depression in the same inferolateral leads starting from end of stage 2 reaching a max of 1.6mm at peak exercise.
The ST depression persisted at a minimal level throughout recovery.

Damn chim and there isn't much I can discover from the internet. The polyclinic doc just said that there might be blockages.

Note that my blood pressure is usually on the low side 90/60 and cholesterol level is good. For those who want to go for checkup, best is to include threadmill ECG.

PS: Is this happening to all those with NUT in their nick? Think I should change mine. Razz

Tks Gofnut Bro for sharing this with us.....i'm 43 this year too..... the last few days I was thinking that this could happen to me at anywhere and anytime.....even on the golf course. I think we as golfer it will be good if we have some First Aid knowledge because golf is a sport where accident does happen (e.g Hit by golf ball or buggy, Snake Bite, Heat Stoke and Heart Attack). All this incidents need immediate attention and if we know how to react we can improve recovery rate and reduce long term injury or fatality.

Do other forms of exercises other than golf.

Less meat, more veggie once after 30.

Plus annual health checks to be sure.....

Life's short....stay healthy
