course rating should be according to the course and not according to gender! that s my opinion.

Hi Poresia,

The 70.5/124 course rating from red tee is for women.  The 67.9/121 course rating from white tee is for men.

If a female golfer were to play from the white tee ... I would estimated the course rating to be 73/130

If a male golfer were to play from the red tee ... I would estimate the course rating to be 66/118

Hence it is perfectly logical once you consider that slope and course ratings are gender specific.

The course rating reflects the score a scratch (Handicap 0) player is expected to shoot on that course.  Also the course rating system is very much based on distance.  Even hazards, tight landing areas, elevated greens, location and number of bunkers ... etc etc are given a value in effect on distance and translated back to distance when calculating the course rating.

So the length of the course does not change from a given tee box.  However, since the course rating is based what a human scratch golfer would play, and given that on average, a 0 handicap male golfer is going to hit the ball further than a 0 handicap female golfer, the course rating has to be different.

As an example, if a male and female golfer play from the same teebox (e.g. white) and both shoot the same score, the female golfer will end up posting a much lower hcap differential than the male.  In other words, the female golfer is a much better golfer relative to the female golfing population than the male is to the male golfing population.

In GR terms, if the female golfer mentioned above were to play from the red tee, she would have to give the male golfer playing from the white tee some strokes to account for the handicap difference, and even more if the poor S**Ker male golfer is playing from blue ...

sorry a bit OT ... but I think get what I am trying to say ...

Derek,

thanks for your clarifications. one question. when we entered score for hcp index calcuation to nsrcc, system will not take into account gender and there is only 1 rating for each tee box?

i started to notice kranji red tee course rating is higher bcos my 14 year old spotted it n ask me n i was dumbfolded. he used to play from red but now play from white but course rating of white is lower.

Actually the system for juniors is slightly more complicated.  The system should take into account gender but not age.  In some club systems, they will extend the red tee for male juniors, but that is quite rare.  It all depends on how the club sets up the reference database for the tee boxes.

I guess your son will end up with a higher handicap index over the next few games as he plays from the white ... however, in tournament play his nett score should go down assuming he manages to shoot around the same scores.

I thought Kranji is a lot tougher than 67.9/121 from the white.

How can it be that low?

I agree ... but what to do ... although the course rating system is standardized, the interpretation is still highly subjective and up to the panel of raters who did the rating ...

Given Kranji is pretty short from the white, the 67.9 makes sense, but the slope rating at 121 is a bit on the low side ...

But then again ... I have had a lot of poor rounds at Kranji, perhaps I am biased ... Laughing

In my opinion, Kranji is short but those few short par 4s and so called short par 3 hole 5 are not easy because it requires accuracy to avoid blow!

I have had many friends tell me kranji is short and hence imply that it is easy. I am with poresia about the hole layouts.   more than a few spga pro has told me kranji is not an easy course at all.  and it is quite a different beast from the black tee.

although I am sure some ksls 18 handicap can enlighten us with a strategy to tackle kranji.
