I see a lot of golfers bypassing the 5 wood in favour of a rescue club. Is the 5 wood on its way out? For me personally no, I carry both a 18 degree 5 wood and a 17 degree rescue. They both have their uses and are both integral to my bags set up.

it depends on your game

i was just discussing with my fitter today about taking out my 18deg hybrid and replace with a 5 wood.

the 18deg is my 170m to 185m shot depending on how i hit it

The conclusion is that we stick to the 18deg cos i am able to hit it out of any lie or slope.

Tho im darn confident of the 3w, it must be on a flat lie and first cut of rough. Else will be haywire

At the end of the day, it depends on the player's game.

Tiger dishes out a 5w on certain courses

personally, I would carry a 5w. but i need a gap wedge more than i need a wood. however, if i could have it my way, i'd carry a 5w (18*) and a hybrid (21*).

I hit my 4 Iron 195 m max so when I need a bit more on a long par 5 ill go the 17 degree (ugly stick) G15 Hybrid. If I need a bit more (120m) I will go the 18 degree G25 5 wood because if I catch my 3 wood pure its through the back of the green and Im dead.

I find that for me, my 3w choked down becomes my 5w. Around 220m. But personally I dislike playing the woods because of the shallow angle of descend compared to the hybrid. I'm a very aggressive player, bane and boon. I like to go right at the pin, it's not my thing to let it feed up. At most, ill give about 10m of room for space but even then i try to hit the high cut

I second that. Same for me mate. We probably need a few strokes off playing against these big hitters...

I don't really think 5-woods are out of the picture at all. It's probably more of personal preference, what golfers feel comfortable with and what they are looking to get out of their bag setup.

Back in the days when I was in oz, I had a driver, 3w, 2-P, 2 other wedges, putter. Came to Singapore with Driver, 3w, 2 x hybrids, 5-P, 3 other wedges, putter. Now, driver, 3w, 5w, 4-P, putter, with 3 other wedges on its way.

I guess it comes down to what and how one see whether the 5-wood fits into one's current play.

I can't even hit my driver 195m. Sad

I have more wedges than woods cos' I can't go regulation on for most par 4 and 5.

Tried so many hybrids and nothing beat my old TM rescue which now swings like a noodle. So i switched to a 5wood. I disagree with the shallow angle of attack. I hit it like an iron with the ball on inner left foot and it gives me height and distance (180m).

me too. i tried to replace my TM 2007 burner 5W with adams 3 hybrid n after a few games, i decided to try to sell my adams hybrid n use my 5 wood again. in fact, i love my 5 wood so much that i stop using my 3 wood on fairways and even sometimes at tee box where there s not much difference btw my average 3 wood n a good 5W tee shot.

Using 4w (17*) in place of 3w & 5w.

And occasionally 7w (21*) instead of hybrid.

I guess it depends on the course..

i tried cobra FW (adjustable from 3 to 5) n i like it. think 4W maybe a good option as i find its not easy to launch ball with 3 wood on fairways as compared to 5 wood so maybe 4W is best of both.

I would say 3 wood is a endangered species. 5 wood is more reliable and 3 wood is usually not required in my bag only if I am going for 2 on par5.

i think 3 wood is long gone instead. didnt see the need for its distance when my driver goes abt 220 and my 5 wood about 185 with a clean shot. maybe its just me. lol.

Actually I was trying to retire my 5FW for a 19 deg hybrid. But at a demo session, the pro there said that the hybrid did not fit my shots compared to the 5FW or the 22 deg hybrid. In fact he told me my 22 hybrid is hitting longer than the 19 deg hybrid hence I dropped the idea ever since. Maybe it's just me Sad

For me, I still use a 5 fairway wood, probably because I start off with a 5 wood
But, at least for me, the different in distance between a 5 or a 3 is minimal. Instead, I rather work on improving distance for my 5 wood rather than getting or changing to a 3 wood:)

For me, a 3 wood is a definite must. My 3wis about 240m off the tee while the driver is consistently at 265m. Sometimes I feel that I need to place the ball on a given spot on the fairway and that's when the wood comes in. It is my go-to and ever reliable club. Since most junior tournaments play from the whites, loosing 20m of distance isn't a big deal.
