in game, don't adjust, just aim left. if at range, see a pro would be the safest advice.

I was told not to keep count for my 1st 18 holes. Even so, the feeling was terrible. Tee-off at 1st hole - missed... 2nd try, ball rolling on ground... Basically, throughout game, no chance to sit in cart. Crying or Very sad

Now already 5th game and still playing terribly at around 130-140. After every game, wanted to e-bayed my clubs, but after 1 week, back to driving range again.

I guess that's golf... Swing

my virgin experience was at tanjung puteri, good 1st drive @ 1st hole but things went downhill from there. morale of the story is that range condition v.s green condition is totally different ball game. score @ end of the day was 126, lost about 6-7 balls, but went home happy Smile

imho, golf is really more a mental game and learning how to recover from bad shots and adjusting to the situation/terrain/lie. SHORT GAME IS IMPT Beer

golfrookie, try using the clubs that you're better with first. could be your 6 or 8 iron.

I'd leave the big stick for later. It's better if you hit 3 or 4 iron shots on to a par 4 rather than blasting with a driver into the lake then taking your 3rd shot from there.

if you limit yourself to double bogey you will be breaking 120 in no time Smile

Hi chemicalpro.

Thanks for advice. I only have up to 5 iron, so may need to use 7 or 5 wood instead of driver for tee-off. Still hitting slices quite frequently. Any advice?

If I remember correctly, my first game was at Daiman 18 some years and I came back with 124. I enjoyed the experience as it was the first time I was at the course and my kakis encouraged me all the way and taught me the game rules and finer points in short game and putting.

Thereafter, I developed a quest for distance and was belting the driver everytime I saw the tee-box, Par 3s exempted. My scores came down but I did not break 100 as the drives took me to places in the golf course others did not venture to.

A light bulb in my head switched on after that and I became more judicious in the use of the driver, so much so that it was relegated for use as a warm-up club only. Back then, I was only playing 4-5 times a year due to family commitments, and so could not develop any touch on the course. My score also hovered around the mid 90s.

I recently joined a golf club at the encouragement of my friends and for once, I am able to play regularly, at least twice a month, though I would have hoped to be able to play weekly. The driver became a good friend once again.

What I am trying to relate is for you to enjoy the experience and not be too bothered with the score first. It is a quest to be better and so, take the chance to savour the moment and work one area at a time. For budding golfers, it is better to take the shorter club first (hybrid or 5wd) for tee-off as it is easier to swing. For about 2 years, I used my hybrid to tee-off exclusively as I lost confidence in my driver and my results were still respectable. Once done, focus on the next shot, the approach, short game and putting. The last 2 areas will help to save strokes.

I second that advice. If possible, try to get a hybrid. It is much easier to hit than a FW or driver, and it will also give you distance. It's also a rescue club and can be used in the rough to punch out the ball.

For your slices, I suspect you could be swinging outside-in, resulting in the club face being open at impact. Best though to get help from someone who can see your swing in motion and advice you accordingly.

If you tend to slice, the longer clubs will only exacerbate the problem, so lay off the driver for a while till that is sorted out.

actually driver is not that difficult to hit, if we take a very relax swing, can easily get 150m and straight. Its very difficult to get a big slice with a slow swing.

its only that its easier to swing faster with the driver (long and light) so we all tend to swing faster. nobody like to swing their wedge fast into the ground (it hurts and more difficult with the shorter shaft and smaller face), but driver we swings for the fences. Getting a driver shaft that is too stiff also does not help (cause we always get the shaft that suits our faster swing)

Faster swing + longer shaft (more difficult) = poor shots.

Ofcourse when you can swing for 200m++ relatively straight maybe 1/5 times, its more shiok than 150m 5/5 times dead center.

Unfortunately when a guy sees anything open, he will go for it.

Hi Quest,

Thanks. Am actually considering to get a hybrid, since I have only up to 5 iron. Any advice on selection of suitable hybrid?

Just had my first 18 holes yesterday. Had tried once at Octville but poor buggies had made us to end the game at 12th hole. I think I got 116. Slicing my driver every time. Found my new best friend Iron-4 as i need to hit it out from rough and are far away from pin. Luckily short game save me a bit. Got one par four I hit with 5 shots with the last from the bunker straight into hole. Cannot sleep last nite, keep thinking how nicely it went in and how it would be better if I had not screw up the previous four shots. Haha... but that's golf

Clubs are always a personal choice and what works for me may not be for you. I use the older Cleveland Halos 2i & 3i. Have not tried the newer Cleveland models so cannot comment on them.

There are some hybrids on the market which you may want to consider. The new Taylormade Rescues are well reviewed, check this link: http://thesandtrap.com/clubs/taylormade_rescue_2009_review.

The Cobra Baffler DWS is also another option. I have tried it before and it performs well.

Check out the equipment review on hybrids by Golfdigest. http://www.golfdigest.com/equipment/ratings/hybrids/2009/02/hotlist_hybrids

A word of caution though: Take the review as a reference and not as the gospel truth. Ultimately what works for them may not work for you. You will need to try the clubs that you have shortlisted and pick the one which you feel you're most comfortable and confident with.

If it's any consolation, I've been playing for a while now and I still slice my balls all the time.

Yes, I should see a coach.

I've learned from my good friend bro Duval_S that I should learn to embrace my "skill" so I aim way left these days Wink

but sometimes aiming way left will make yr ball go further rite.... coz u might be in a more "open" position... and after sometime, u find tht u can hardly contact the ball well...
in the end, more right n less distance...

*ever feel this way? when juz got the driver initially, the ball fly far n straighter... as we get used to the club, all the old mistakes kicks in...

Yeah, I get that all the time.

I've learned to realize one thing:

I can aim left, I can aim right but whatever you do, please don't have me aim straight ahead.

try aiming straight (abit left if u uncomfortable) then try to "finish" yr swing "smoothly"....remb to "turn" over yr CF in the process...
in short... back to basic... it might help...

Sounds like a plan. Since I'm giving this a try and my swing will be wobbly for a while, I'm sure you'll be kind enough to give 3-3 to accommodate the changes in my game Smile
