I have heard quarrel stories from golfers. Among some of the quarrels are "No Money Don't Play Golf" for whatever reasons.

I like to hear if this is this a fair comment?

There are in fact always no right or wrong for such comments.
Everyone thinks differently, so why bother about others comments, as long as you are happy playing golf.

it is not fair ... but i think it is understandable.

for my case, i am not under huge income but im hooked on the game ...
And for sure, to play to practice you need to pay for golf more than any other sports i believe. Correct me if i am wrong.

in Singapore i play mostly executive golf courses bc 18H green fee are a bomb here =p
around 35-50SGD for 2.5 hours enjoyment (timing fluctuating with number of player)

Driving range: 7sgd for 100 balls in MBGC at night. this rate is quite fair i guess comparatively to other countries. But then again you pay to practice =p

short game practice: in mots clubs you have to pay or be a member or have a flight the same day.
10 sgd an hour in MBGC O_o
short game practices are not available everywhere for free

and then you have transportation fee =p golf course are in middle of nowhere and i do not have a car

the gear is quite an investment - and you d better be not a gear addict =p
without counting on shoes/collar shirts/gloves  Very Happy

when you start you lost lots of ball (even a 50cts the ball it can go high cost :p )

in my view no money dont play golf is a bit unfair, bc you can understand you ave to be rich to play. It is true that to fully enjoy, go to nice courses etc bc there are no lobang you have to pay.
but you can still play not on a shoestring but a reasonable cost.

and some time to time, its enjoyable to go to batam or bintan for a day trip =p nice courses and the costy is competitive - sometimes - Smile

I encounter some golfers "good" & "bad" type even though they are not well to do (including myself). The 'good" one will auto pay up the green fee without asking or they will tell you when they will pay up with a valid reason. The "bad" one will try to siam payment with alot of reasons, be it valid anot. Then keep asking for game and on actual day will tell you many many story like forget change $$$ or nv bring enuff.

There was once I brought a friend who was keen to pick up golf to a club fitter in sg who also carry pre owned golf sets. Once we arrived I asked the fitter if there was any cheaper pre owned sets on sale. Immediately he replied me: " Your friend dun want to spend money cannot golf one lah, want to buy cheap cheap golf set and not willing to spend sure cannot succeed want lah, maybe play basketball or football cheaper lah." I was like..... Shocked  Shocked . Oppa ya ya style siol

Bro ahdan, care to share the name of the club fitter who made the statement? If not convenient to share openly, you can pm me. He should not have made that statement as a professional club fitter.  Mad

If this game of golf is called a gentleman's game, really, would a gentleman say this kind of things?

if its a banter between buddies, fine. But if its used to maim, chide or belittle others, the person saying it shouldn't be playing this gentleman's game after all.

Lousy clubfitter .... Golf should be accessible for everybody, that is how we can grow the game and bring nez stuff nez courses new technology, more players etc (while keeping the ethics of the game) and eventually make it even more (price) accessible

I truly believe Golf should kind of destroy this "elite money" game  ...!

You cannot expect a beginner to invest on high cost gears ... !!! he will eventually switch to more costly gear later and there should be gear prices for every body

I think this statement is not fair, its depend on each individual how much they like to spend for the hobby. Some guys dont earn much but they spend a lot on their hobby. Some guys earn a lot but still buying 50 cents used balls, no membership, and 10 years old golf set.
After all, who are we to judge how others ppl spend their money.
Having said that, having lots of money can help to enjoy the game better but does not deprive ones to play the game.

I guess if really have no money, there are more urgent things on hands to attend to instead of cutting grass for the duration of the game. Really will enjoy meh? 101 things floating around in your mind, how to focus on the shot/game/course management?

Assumption: No money, as in absolute zero, negative kind? Bankruptcy issues? I think anyone in that position would really not be bothered if he/she should golf or not.

If is those chao kuan kind of golf "buddy", then its a different story altogether. For the courses I played they do accept various modes of payment. So once, twice in a purple moon still okay.

But no one should put up with this kind of comment if it coming from a store/fitter/retailer/coach. Just name and shame, for the benefit of the community. TIA.

P.S. I only hear before no money don't learn how to eat durian. And the guy was waving his durian knife. Trying to sell a 80-90 bucks per durian, iirc.

I guess my take is:

I will avoid the person who gave the comment. The game was seen to be for the rich in the old days but the game has come a long way and made it accessable to the general public.

I suppose some of our local players who hav done well for Singapore do come from a humble background. If you ask and dig further, you will released who I am takling about but no names here.

So if durian is expensive to buy, does it mean I cannot eat durian? Well, I can find where are the wild durian trees are growing and when it is in session, I will go there and wait for the fruit to drop.

Should we let someones comment dampen your interest in golf?

Agreed with what you had said. My friends (including relative) have been saying that I becoming a rich man cos I play golf now.  Explain to them this is getting more common and alot ppl picking up this sports. Doesn't mean must be rich to play golf nowadays.

An interesting topic really.

Golf is often seen as elitist in Singapore because of the many stereotypes put into the game locally

- country club needs member to play or play as guests of members
- golfers need to have a license "HCP or PC" to be able to play the game
- equipment used are perceived to be costly when there are less costly alternatives around
- green fee is understandably high with no option of "public course" fee like those found in UK or the States, therefore seen as upclass by non-golfers

But the above points might be unique to Singapore.

In the middle east, one does not need to be a member to play at any one of the 20+ country clubs here. You just walk in and pay as a visitor. The treatment given to a visitor is often as good as those received by the member. Golf is not meant to be an elitist game to begin with. St. Andrews turns into a public park/picnic ground every Sunday for all to enjoy. No membership needed!

Again, there is no need for any clubs here for a HCP to pay and play. All you have to do is to observe the salient rules/etiquette of the game. PC is unheard of here.

Equipment, and thus related cost is relative. There are 900SGD drivers out in the market as there are 60 bucks ones. Just as a 25 buck pair of soccer boots from an unknown china brand compared to the latest Ronaldo-endorsed Nikes retailing for 399SGD.

Singapore's lack of space results in premium golf fees, much like Seoul and Hongkong. There, golfers are perceived to be rich to play. But in the middle east for example, you have peak and off peak seasons, twilight rates wtc. And during the summer, rates go as low as 65SGD for 18 holes for a championship course like Abu Dhabi Golf Club, the host of the European Tour.

Interesting debate

I think there may be a more tactful way of saying it rather than bluntly saying “no money don’t play golf”

To me, golf is a game that is best enjoyed on course, and not on the driving range / practice area

On course, is when one can enjoy the challenge of

-          hitting an approach shot that must carry a lake,

-          driving a tee shot with OB right and hazards left,

-          putting a downhill double breaking putt,

-          making a 4 footer to square the match with your playing partner, etc

Yes, it is true one can still play the game to some extend on a budget, eg I cannot afford Serapong / Gardens every week, so I have my golf fix at NSRCC with my kakis

The issue of not having a car is not that great cos one can always call a cab – I always see my expatriate colleagues who come play golf in taxis.

There is always GD (New equipment) and Market Place (Used equipment) to get equipped economically.

In all honesty, if one is really tight on finances, I’m not gonna try to sugar-coat this, golf is still ‘doable’ (depending on your personal level of satisfaction), however we are never gonna be like in Australia where one can play a round at public course for, say, $20.

While golf has become more affordable,  it is probably more enjoyable if there’s a bit more moolah, especially in this region. I don’t think I can enjoy the game if I am limited to playing 9-holes at Mandai, no disrespect to others who do, but just my 2 cents worth…

It's actually different perspective... Golf is a gentleman game? Or Golf is a rich man's game? Most often then not, i hear the latter...

Why? Maybe land is limited here and golf needs to be played in a country club?

Rich does not mean you can play good golf. Some not so rich can really play good golf. Example like some marshal and caddy. Just be happy that we are healthy and fortunate to enjoy this wonderful game.

IMO , we as fellow golfers know that good golfers don't mean that they are rich golfers.  Good golfers are those who have put in a considerable amount of hard work and resources to be in where they are today, there is no short cut.
