You can do in Singapore and be a Singapore PGA member, you must apply and pass a PAT.

SPGA has 2 classes B and A, foriegners cannot be Class B you must pass the lot.

As far as I am aware no one has passed Class A in the last 3 or so events.....

I also heard that winning a tournament prize of more than $X also qualify for Pro status. Is this true?

To be a SPGA pro you need to pass the Pro Test

To be a Class A you need to score +6 or better over 36 holes competition

To be a Class B you need to score +14 or better over 36 holes competition

that is not true. You only lose your amateur status but is not regarded as a pro.

Class A means you are eligible to teach and play for prize money

Class B means you are able to teach only. Not compete for prizemoney

The only way a foreigner can be a Aust PGA member is to either become a PR or do a diploma course through the PGAIGI. Once completed you can go straight into the 3rd year of the traineeship. Go to www.pgaigi.com for further details. You can also contact a friend on mine Josh Madden who is in charge of the program on joshmadden@pgaigi.com

The traineeship info can be found here.

Hope this helps

Hi Rock, this is a weird one, and makes me wonder why tournaments offer $$ in Amatuer events.

According to the rules of Golf, if the prize is more than $500 you lose your Ametuer status.

But then you are in limbo land, because you now cannot play ametuer events, and you certainly cannot play Pro events... so why do it....

I can understand if you win a $200k car in hole in one event, I also would give up ametuer status... but that does not entitle you to be a "pro"... funny ruling.

And you cannot just declare yourself an amatuer again, you must apply to the R and A and they may say no... Surprised

Oh my goodness. This is confusing. People keep telling me so and so is a pro because they won prizes in excess of $X, that's why they are pro.

I don't think the tournament offer cash prizes. I meant prizes that are worth more than $X. Sorry I didn't make myself clearer the first time.

Losing amateur status means that one is a pro? Wow... this is really confusing.

I went through the SPGA test and admitted to become class 'A' member of SPGA about 10 years ago. The tee used is determined by the SPGA committee, but as a entry test for professional golfers it is normally the back tees (gold tees or black tees). Shorthitter mentioned that no one obtained pass in class A membership in the last three tests conducted. So the course set up is normally difficult.

Losing amateur status does not mean you will be permitted to play in the professional event (of course you could try you luck to enter). You may like to apply for reinstatement (back to amateur status again) by applying to Singapore Golf Association. The normal waiting period is 1 to 2 years depending on the severity (such as the value of prizes, period of infringement).

The question I have is that when one won a prize of more than X dollars in a charity event for example, how would SGA know about it? Does it mean the club will submit the information to SGA? And if the person's handicap is not maintain by SGA, his/her name will not be in their database right? So this person can still continue to play in amateur event, isn't it?

All golfers in Singapore maintains their handicaps by clubs, which are full members or associate members of SGA (ie. the right to issue & maintain is 'licenced' to the clubs by SGA). so Clubs are duty bound to report back to SGA in strict sense.

However, you might be right to say that the person who infringed the amateur status could continue to play in amateur events as it is quite difficult to monitor such huge number of golfers in Singapore (until someone who know the situation report to the organiser of the organiser).

You might look at the issue like driving a car without a licence. If there is accident or if the driver are caught by traffic police, then there is serious consequence.

A player who lost amateur status continue to play in amateur without winning or being reported shall be alright. but is that what the player want?
